The best way to consume Grey Code’s music is to compare the feelings he invokes at the start and end of every record. You’ll start a song with a particular feeling, but, it will leave you in a completely different state of mind at the end of it. Looking at the quality, it’s no surprise that a wide majority of Grey Code’s music, including his seminal 2022 album, ‘Renewal,’ has landed on Metalheadz, one of the most influential institutions of drum & bass and jungle genres. Making his return to the label, Grey Code delivered yet another masterpiece of a release. The five-track ‘Growing Pains’ EP is yet another example of the artist’s boundless creative mind and one that is determined to create authentic musical experiences. After the release, instead of simply writing a straightforward review of the EP, we thought it would be a good idea to take you deep into some of Grey Code’s finest tunes, which, in our opinion, make him one of the most inventive producers of the genre. **GREY CODE – PLUME** Starting with a track from his latest EP on Metalheadz Music, which served as the inspiration for this article. It was hard to choose between ‘Bodies’ from the release, but the soft and warm tones in ‘Plume’ coupled with its up-tempo percussion meant it made the cut. Despite the obvious production effort and the level of precision that’s gone into the tune, it never feels over-engineered and does a stellar job of taking us on a thrilling full-tempo ride. The long cinematic intro is almost deceiving because it doesn’t prepare you for what’s coming later; which is a giant wall of sound that has the ability to pierce through the foundations of the dancefloor it’s played on. Teaming up with Amoss, Grey Code came up with a humdinger of a remix to close the South Of The River EP on Flexout Audio. As soon as you press play, you’ll be immersed in a terrifying zombie apocalypse, complete with a massive bassline, eerie breakdowns, and an incredible score. Expansive sound design, penetrating percussions, and dramatic synth melodies mixed with breathtaking progression makes the record an essential Grey Code listening and one that is uplifting and engaging from start to finish. The signature Grey Code atmospheric tones and emotional melodies shine through on the tune over a backbone of a warm and rolling bassline.
