Following the release, we caught up with Jono Stephenson for an insightful conversation about his latest single, a deep dive into his unique musical style, his journey as a DJ, and much more. **TFword: Hey, thanks for taking the time out to chat with us. You closed off 2024 in style, but how would you like to describe the year in terms of your sonic journey?** **Jono Stephenson:**2024 was a very tough but also very inspiring year and I think you can hear that in my music going from lighter and happier to a bit darker but that being said, each moment was special and a blessing. **TF: Before we dive deep into your music, how and what was the pivotal moment in the inception of Jono Stephenson?** **Jono Stephenson:**Honestly I can say that since I was a child, I can remember always wanting to do music but in what capacity back then, I didn’t know. As I got older, I grew a love for electronic music and of course, found that to be my musical outlet. **TF: Your latest single marks your return to Purified Records. What are your thoughts on how ‘Digital Rain’ has shaped up?** **Jono Stephenson:**I’m incredibly happy with this release, not just musically but with how people have received it. **TF: What we love about ‘Digital Rain’ is how it beautifully combines lush melodies with its hypnotic intensity to deliver such an enchanting experience. Take us through the creative process of the tune.** **Jono Stephenson:**At the time of creating ‘Digital Rain,’ I had just come out of a difficult time in my life and used that as inspiration to break through those emotions. What has it been like working with them?** **Jono Stephenson:**I love them – they are absolutely family to me and I’m grateful they’ve given me and my music a platform. **TF: Was there a particular reason behind naming the tune ‘Digital Rain.’ If yes, what was it?** **Jono Stephenson:**The name behind the track was made based on the sound of the pluck and I thought it described the track quite well in that regard. **TF: What does your typical day in the studio look like, and how do you stay inspired?** **Jono Stephenson:** I usually wake around 4 am and get my coffee then head into the studio for usually between 5 – 7 hours, then head out and either make calls or take calls + do admin after that. **TF: Is there a specific style of music or genre that you would like to explore more in the coming future?** **Jono Stephenson:** I prefer to rather just make music that comes from the heart and of course that’s more melodic techno oriented but I love to incorporate elements from multiple genres. I also think it’s healthy to evolve as an artist so who knows what will happen as we go into the future but 1 thing is for certain – it will always be a reflection of who I am. **TF: Talk us through how you go about your DJ sets. Jono Stephenson:**I visualize how it will be in my head and prepare a sonic journey accordingly. **TF: How do your South African roots influence your music, if at all?** **Jono Stephenson:**Honestly they don’t influence my music in a musical sense but seeing the struggle that people go through on an everyday basis back home has definitely impacted my emotions which in turn has impacted my music. **TF: What is lined up for Jono Stephenson with his future releases?** **Jono Stephenson:**I currently have multiple collaborations with familiar artists we all know and love which I’m looking forward to releasing but there’s more news on that in the future. Otherwise, I have a bunch of new music I’m working on and singles lined up too so it’s going to be a stacked year, thankfully.
