In 2013, Debjyoti embarked on a mission to bring drum & bass to the forefront of India’s electronic music landscape. From March 7 to 9, the city of Bangalore came alive with the pulsating beats of drum & bass as some of the country’s hottest talents, alongside up-and-coming artists, took to the stage. The event culminated in an all-day sundowner, an unforgettable experience for fans and artists alike. And, of course, Debjyoti himself was at the heart of the action, delivering three unique sets across the weekend that showcased his versatility and deep connection to the music. We sat down with The Untitled One to delve into his remarkable journey, exploring how he built the drum & bass scene in India from the ground up, the challenges he faced along the way, and the lessons he’s learned over the past decade. **TFword: 12 years of running Drum & Bass India, fans, artists, yourselves; it’s been an incredible ride for everyone involved. How do you look back at the last 12 years?** **The Untitled One:**The past 12 years have been an unforgettable journey—passionate, relentless, and deeply rewarding. Drum & Bass India isn’t just a project; it’s my purpose, my heartbeat, my way of life. I live for this, and I love every moment of it. Losing my corporate photography job two years ago turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it allowed me to dedicate myself fully to pushing the scene forward. Every challenge, every event, and every connection along the way has only reinforced my commitment to growing bass music in India. And the best part? This is just the beginning. **TF: You’re now the premium Drum & Bass party of the country, where artists eagerly wait for the chance to showcase their art, especially for Bangalore Massive. How has this side of the journey been for you right from the time you started Bangalore Massive?** **The Untitled One:**In sound system culture, the word “Massive” represents more than just a party—it’s about the people, the energy, the family, the community. And Bangalore Massive embodies exactly that. Watching it grow over the years has been incredibly fulfilling, and it’s only getting bigger and stronger. It’s not just about the events—it’s about building a movement where artists, fans, and newcomers alike can come together and celebrate the music we love. **TF: There was a time when keeping the scene alive was a thankless job, which you didn’t just survive but championed with the same passion as you do today. What kept you going?** **The Untitled One:**As I said earlier, this isn’t just something I do—it’s my purpose in life. I consider myself as an atheist, as cliche as it sounds, if I were to believe in something, Drum & Bass would be my religion. The feeling of watching an artist I booked light up the stage, seeing people connect through music, and the appreciation we receive for the work we put in—those moments make everything worth it. Even the little things, like sharing our event content with artists—without watermarks, just out of respect—bring me a sense of pride. It’s the love for the culture, the music, and the people that keeps me pushing forward. I didn’t have time to prepare my sets in advance—I just showed up with my flash drives and dug through my collection on the spot. Day 1 was a straight-up dancefloor and rollers set, which came naturally to me. Day 2 was more experimental, blending 130-174 BPM in one journey. But Day 3 was the most emotional and tricky—I called it my “12 Years of Liquid & Soul” set. I played tunes spanning from the ’90s to the 2000s, finally closing with newer tracks as a tribute to the journey I’ve had with this genre. It was a deeply personal and emotional moment for me. **TF: You hosted a DJ competition as well for up-and-coming DJs to showcase their art and then have them at the Weekender. How has the response been?** **The Untitled One**: The response has been phenomenal! We received 25 incredible entries, and it was amazing to see so many fresh faces diving into this music. The level of creativity, technical skill, and energy in these sets was unreal, making it extremely difficult to choose winners. In fact, the submissions were so strong that we decided to crown two winners per day instead of just one! Seeing this new wave of DJs stepping up to represent DNB gives me hope and excitement for the future of the scene. **TF: How has the Weekender reinforced your commitment to pushing the drum & bass scene forward with the same energy and passion over the past 12 years?** **The Untitled One:**If anything, this Weekender has made me more determined than ever. Seeing the response and the energy in the room, I now know that I can take this even further and do it even better in the years to come. **TF: What change would you like to see in the Indian bass underground?** **The Untitled One:**I’ve been guiding DJs to explore deeper, more soulful sounds instead of just focusing on heavy bangers. This Weekender reinforced that vision—the crowd loved the journey sets, the emotional depth, and the storytelling within the music. I’d love to see more DJs embracing this approach and more audiences opening up to it. **TF: What do you look forward to from the scene going forward?** **The Untitled One:**I hope to see more venues embracing drum & bass. Right now, Social is the only venue that truly supports the genre, and I’d love to see that change.
