[Dina Summer](https://www.instagram.com/dinasummermusic/) is the collaborative brainchild of **Kalipo** and the DJ duo **Local Suicide**, fronted by the enigmatic Greek vocalist **Dina**. Her journey into music began early, performing on local radio stations in Thessaloniki as a teenager. In fact, she made waves as one of the first female DJs in the city’s scene, challenging conventions and establishing a name for herself with her bold, eclectic taste. Her artistic path eventually led her to Berlin, where she met her partner Max, and together they formed Local Suicide, a dynamic duo known for their ability to weave post-disco, new wave, and dark techno influences into powerful DJ sets and productions. The third member of the group, Jakob, better known as Kalipo, brings a contrasting yet perfectly complementary energy to the mix. Hailing from Bavaria, he made his mark early on as a founding member of the legendary German electro-punk band Frittenbude, before branching out into solo production that pushed the boundaries of electronic music with textured, emotional depth. There’s a timeless cool to their sound, yet it always feels compelling and forward-thinking. Their debut album established them as purveyors of dark, danceable synth-pop, but it’s their sophomore effort, ‘Girls Gang’ (released earlier this year), that truly showcases their evolution. The record leans further into songwriting, incorporating live bass and guitar while giving Dina’s vocals more room to shine, shifting between sung passages and her trademark spoken-word style. Yet, despite this expanded sonic palette, the album retains the infectious melodies and club-friendly energy that define Dina Summer’s sound. So, we sat down with Dina Summer for a chat about their evolution, their artistic connection, and the vision driving one of Berlin’s most exciting acts. **TFword: Your sophomore album ‘Girls Gang’ explores themes like empowerment, outsider hood, and nostalgia. What was the overarching vision behind this record, and how did these themes shape its sound? Dina: **The vision behind Girls Gang was to create a space where individuality is celebrated and where feeling like an outsider isn’t something to hide, but something to embrace. We wanted the record to feel empowering, like an anthem for anyone who’s ever felt like they didn’t fit into the mold. Sonically, these themes led us to blend melancholic melodies with powerful beats – balancing vulnerability with strength, always with a nod to the past but keeping our eyes firmly on the future. **TF: Compared to your debut ‘Rimini,’ this album leans more into new wave, post-punk, and synth-pop while keeping some club energy. Was this shift intentional, or did it happen organically during production? Jakob**: Yeah, from the start, we wanted the album to be more song-driven and bring in more guitars. We’ve always been heavily into new wave and post-punk, so it just made sense to head in that direction. The lines between genres are pretty fluid anyway. **TF: Tracks like ‘No More Tears’ and ‘Girls Gang’ feel anthemic. Were these written with live performances in mind, or did they evolve differently in the studio? Max:**Generally, the shift towards more traditional song structures on the new album came naturally, we didn’t really try to fabricate them for the stage. That said, surely the 50+ live shows we played after the release of the first album did influence our sound a bit. Initially, we thought that we’d be playing late night club shows in this setup but then we mostly played more traditional slots on our headline shows. Also, the more songs we wrote,e the more we wanted to play, so we shortened most of them quite drastically to be able to squeeze in as many as possible. How did this change your creative dynamic as a trio? Jakob:**I wouldn’t say our dynamic changed just because we used more bass and guitars this time. Whether it’s a synth or a guitar – honestly, it doesn’t make that much of a difference for how we work. But the vocals, yeah, that’s a different story. I think Dina really pushed her boundaries on tracks like “Nothing to Hide”, and that’s opened up new possibilities for us as a band. With the unique way she’s found her voice, we can now approach choruses and other parts of a song in a whole new way. **TF: You’ve mentioned nostalgia as a theme – ‘Halkidiki’ even has a Greek version. What personal or cultural memories inspired this album’s retro-futuristic vibe? Dina:**Nostalgia is a key theme in the album, both in the music and the lyrics. It’s a feeling that’s bittersweet – where you experience joy and melancholy simultaneously. *Halkidiki* draws inspiration from the Greek region of the same name, a place where I’ve spent part of my summers since I was a child, like most people from northern Greece. I wanted to capture that carefree, free-spirited energy in a song. The Greek version of the track allowed me to deepen that connection to the place and its memories. We were all heavily influenced by Italo disco, new wave, and electroclash growing up, and we wanted to channel those sounds into the album while giving them a fresh, futuristic twist. The retro-futuristic vibe is our way of blending the past with what lies ahead, creating something that feels both nostalgic and forward-looking. **TF: What was the most challenging track to finalize on ‘Girls Gang,’ and why? Max:**Our workflow is quite fast and I can’t remember getting stuck on any of the original tracks in the production process. Usually, when we are facing major difficulties, we just start a new song. It was tricky to get club versions for ‘Promise Me’ and ‘Schall & Rauch’ right, and we had to restart from scratch multiple times until we were all happy with them. For that reason, we now have an army of befriended DJs to do the work for us and remix the album tracks so that they can be played on the dancefloor as well 😉 **TF: The indie-exclusive 2 LP includes club versions and remixes by DJ Hell, Damon Jee, and others. How do you decide which tracks get reworked, and what makes a song ripe for a remix? Dina:**We kicked off this remix adventure wanting to give our more organic tunes a proper dancefloor makeover. Instead of picking specific songs for the remixers, we reached out to artists we really love – DJ Hell, Damon Jee, Phunkadelica, and The Populists – and gave them the freedom to choose what sparked their creativity. Since they ended up picking tracks that were already pretty electronic, and because we wanted the non-dancefloor tracks to have more of an electronic vibe, we decided to rope in even more remixers. So, get ready for even more bangers to roll out over the next few months! **TF: Your live shows are highly praised. How do you translate ‘Girls Gang’s studio** **intricacies to the stage, especially with the added live instruments?** **Jakob:**We always think about which parts we can realistically play live. Some things just make more sense coming from the laptop, like the drums. They’re super electronic and tight, and a real kit would change that whole mechanical vibe. Max usually takes care of synth sequences, kind of reworking them live, while I focus on melodies. It keeps things fresh. We also love playing around with transitions, blending tracks and finding new ways to link them. Vocals are mainly Dina’s thing, and Max and I support her. **TF: You’ve played everywhere from Reeperbahn Festival to underground clubs. Do you adjust your set for different crowds, or is Dina Summer’s live experience uncompromising? Max:**We constantly change our live sets and adapt the set lists for almost every show. Luckily, we have enough material now to get it right for all kinds of crowds. Obviously we make sure to keep the key tracks & fan-favorites in the set though! **TF: With a tour planned for the rest of the year, what can fans expect from your Girls Gang live performances? Any surprises in the setlist or production? Jakob:**Yeah, like Max said, we switch up the live set every time and kind of vibe with the space. If it’s a club setting, the set’s more clubby, more transitions, longer stretches in one mood. At festivals or regular concerts, it’s more mixed, we blend the indie stuff with the more techno-driven ones. The main goal is always to hit that ecstatic dance moment. It’s all about chasing that feeling of euphoria. Are there genres or mediums (e.g., film scores, collaborations) you’re eager to explore? Dina:**Can we dream big? Imagine dropping a new record on one of our holy-grail labels – Mute, Sacred Bones, Deewee, Dark Entries… the list goes on. We’d absolutely lose our minds scoring a film, ideally something eerie and mysterious (Tim Burton, are you reading this?). Touring as direct support for one of our idols – The Cure, Depeche Mode or Nine Inch Nails – would be next-level. A collab with John Carpenter or LCD Soundsystem? Pinch us. And, of course, a Michel Gondry-directed video would be the cherry on top. Truth is, our wishlist could fill volumes – bring it on! **TF: Berlin’s scene is constantly shifting. Where do you see yourselves—and the synth-wave/dark-disco movement—in the next few years? Max:**Just like the Berlin scene, we are also constantly shifting and evolving our sound. If you have a listen to our Local Suicide or Kalipo releases of the last 10 years, you will see that we always liked all kinds of styles & genres and I can not imagine that to change in the near future! We already started writing new songs which are somehow similar but slightly clubbier again. I personally think electronic music will be getting much slower again in the next two years as even the kids who started partying during COVID will be having enough from 145 bpm TikTok Techno and their pop gabba trance soon which I’m very much looking forward to as I always preferred making music within 90-115 bpm as the bass lines are more defined and there is more space for vocals etc. **TF: If Girls Gang had a mission statement, what would it be? And what’s next after the tour? Dina:** If *Girls Gang* had a mission statement, it would be about empowering individuals to embrace their true selves, especially during difficult moments. It’s a celebration of boldness, freedom, and self-expression, encouraging everyone to break free from societal expectations and confidently stand out. The album is for those who aren’t afraid to be unapologetically themselves and to dance through life with raw, untamed energy, even when things get tough. It’s about finding strength in vulnerability and empowerment in the face of adversity. After the tour, we’ll be taking a short break to recharge, but we’ll still be playing a few festival shows over the summer. Once we’ve had some time to reflect and regroup, we’ll focus on writing new music.
