Paua is a family. A 7 piece band coming from extremely diverse musical & cultural backgrounds. From New Zealand Maori, homegrown Australians to the Phillipines, Paua truly is an eclectic melting pot. Cassie Whitehead, saxophonist queen of Paua and the only female essence in the band, says “the band is truly able to draw on each other’s strengths and contribute ideas that may seem foreign to the reggae genre”. During creative sessions, songs evolve with each member’s individual flavour, resulting in some amazing compositions and arrangements. Songs often go in interesting directions which again simply adds to the unique musical magic Paua creates.

Founder and frontman Jay Thomas brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the band with his exceptional song writing abilities and impeccable vocal style, he believes that although most songs are inspired by a story, an experience or even the surrounding environment , some are a spontaneous and natural expression.. This was the case with Paua’s massive hit Coming Home. “The words kind of wrote themselves and I never imagined the impact it would have on people in the years to come.”
