Two Sisters is the next installment in composer-librettist Max Abner and director Michael Rogerson's series of operas that combine set-librettos with improvised music. It features music direction by Alana Amore Colvin and an ensemble of singers and musicians including Suzanne Langille, Jana Horn, Stefani Bondari, Conner Simmons, and Samantha Kochis (among others).
Set in the rural enclave of Rough River, Two Sisters follows two sets of neighboring sisters (one pair unremarkable and one pair former-child-stars) and their mothers as they navigate a storm, a drowning, and a transfiguration. A riverine feverdream that constructs a bricolage of family drama, folklore, noir, conspiracy theory, psychoanalysis, and experimental music, this new work interrogates the repercussions of looking in windows and transforming into an image.
