Events and Programming

As of 27 August 2026, Sneaky Pete’s remains open and trading under its established name at 73 Cowgate, Edinburgh EH1 1JW. Its live calendar continues through the rest of 2026 and already includes performances extending into 2027, confirming that the venue is still operating as a busy seven-night music space rather than only as an occasional gig room.

The programme has two closely connected sides. Early-evening shows usually feature touring bands, Scottish artists, solo performers, DJs and emerging acts. The music is deliberately broad: indie, alternative rock, punk, post-punk, electronic music, hip-hop, folk, experimental pop, singer-songwriters and leftfield dance music all appear in the listings. Later events turn the same room into a club, with house, techno, disco, bass, R&B, queer club music and eclectic DJ nights.

Recurring and seasonal programming gives the venue its identity. Regular formats and promoters have included Hot Mess, Scotland’s long-running queer dance party; Soul Jam’s disco-led parties; Postal; RARE; Club Signal; Membrane; Free Time’s early Sunday DJ sessions; Hand-made with Love; and other one-off promoter residencies. Recent listings have included international selectors alongside local residents, while the live programme has continued to prioritise new Scottish acts and touring artists who are still working their way up.

The 2021 programme was interrupted by pandemic restrictions. The venue announced a return to live gigs and clubs for September that year, while Hot Mess resumed as a monthly queer party during the reopening period. The 2022-2024 archive shows a mixture of local releases, student and freshers parties, electronic showcases, new-band bills and touring artists. In 2025, examples included Scottish emerging-artist showcases, club events, alternative rock, psychedelic indie and international electronic acts.

The 2026 calendar continues that pattern. Edinburgh Psych Fest has used Sneaky Pete’s as one of its festival rooms, while the listings include early DJ sets, queer club nights, house and techno parties, album tours, release shows, alternative bands and local multi-act bills. The calendar extending into March and April 2027 suggests that the venue’s long-term model remains intact: frequent, small-scale shows with a strong emphasis on discovery rather than arena-sized names.

Notable earlier performances and memories associated with the room include Young Fathers, Lewis Capaldi, The Amazing Snakeheads, Eagulls, Ezra Furman, Fatherson, Optimo-related events, Monotonix, Bob Log III, James Vincent McMorrow and Yak. Some of the most famous stories are less about a single headliner than about the room’s willingness to accommodate unpredictable performances, crowd interaction and artists who later moved into much larger venues.

Ticket prices vary by promoter, artist and night. Published examples include low-cost club entry around £5 to £8, small local bills and emerging-artist shows commonly in the single figures or low teens, and touring acts reaching the mid-teens or higher before booking fees. A previous venue guide recorded a typical range of £7-£12, but that should be treated as historical context rather than a current fixed tariff.

Tickets and Booking

The safest way to buy tickets is through the venue’s own event listing or the ticket route attached to the individual show. Advance purchase is strongly advisable for popular club nights, festival events, local release shows and artists returning after a previous sell-out. The venue states that some tickets may be available on the door, but entry cannot be assumed once a 100-capacity event is full.

Digital tickets can normally be shown on a phone or tablet; printed tickets are not generally required. For some events, the door team may check a booking name instead. Club tickets are often checked outside, while the gig box-office point is immediately inside the entrance. Arrive with your ticket ready and allow extra time during August, weekends and sold-out events.

There is no permanent public box-office schedule or universal presale window. On-sale timing is controlled by the venue, promoter or artist, so the practical strategy is to watch the listing closely, buy as soon as a desirable show is announced and avoid relying on door sales. Prices may rise between early releases and later tiers, and booking fees can be added to the advertised face value.

The venue is also available for live-gig hire. Its February 2025 hire document lists a £150 hire cost, a 100-person capacity, sound engineer, PA, lights and bar staff as included, with backline and some weekday security excluded. The venue is not currently accepting new club-night proposals and does not offer private party hire.

About Sneaky Pete’s

Sneaky Pete’s is a small grassroots live music venue and nightclub in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Its published capacity is 100, making it one of the city’s most intimate rooms for both bands and DJs. The venue is a single compact space rather than a multi-room complex, and the dancefloor can become the performance area for a band before becoming the club floor later the same night.

The current incarnation was founded in 2008 by Nick Stewart, who took over what had previously been a bar and developed it into a dedicated music venue. The name was revived from an older Cowgate business dating back to the 1970s. Before the present venue, the premises and surrounding area had operated under several different names and nightlife identities, including disco and vodka-club formats. Publicly available sources do not establish every earlier operator or the exact construction date of the building, so those details should not be treated as confirmed.

The room’s reputation grew because it combines a low capacity with unusually high booking frequency. Earlier venue data recorded approximately 250 gigs and 363 club nights per year, while a 2026 industry report describes the operation as booking roughly 600 shows annually and opening seven nights a week. The figures come from different periods, but both illustrate the venue’s unusually intensive use.

Seating and Layout

Most events are standing general admission. There is no published seating plan, balcony, reserved seating tier or permanent VIP section. The bar is near the entrance and runs perpendicular to the performance area, so the first part of the room can feel congested when people are queuing for drinks or entering. The best sightlines are usually further into the room, closer to the stage.

The stage is very low by conventional concert standards, which creates the close-up, almost rehearsal-room feel for which the venue is known. The current technical document lists a stage measuring approximately 4 metres by 3.1 metres and 670 millimetres high. It also describes the venue as having no backstage area; space normally has to accommodate merchandise, cases and production equipment.

For a direct view of a band, move beyond the entrance and bar bottleneck rather than stopping at the first open patch. For stronger bass, the centre-front area is usually the most physical listening position, although the room can be very loud. Standing nearer the sides or towards the back gives more room to move and makes it easier to reach the bar or exit.

There is no dedicated viewing platform. Customers who need to sit can request a chair or stool in advance, and the venue advises arriving early so staff can position it near the stage without obstructing the view. A sold-out club night may be difficult for anyone who needs personal space, so access arrangements should be made before arrival.

Inside the Venue

Expect a deliberately compact, dark and energetic atmosphere rather than a polished theatre interior. The venue’s character comes from its small scale, low stage, hard-wearing club finish and close contact between performers and audience. Reviews regularly praise the intimacy, sound and atmosphere, while also noting that busy nights can feel hot, crowded and physically intense.

The bar serves drinks, but Sneaky Pete’s is not a restaurant and food is not a central part of the standard gig experience. Nearby food is therefore a better option before or after a show. Older visitor information reported small lockers or a lockbox arrangement rather than a conventional staffed cloakroom; because a cloakroom is not guaranteed in the current venue information, bring only what you need.

There is no published dress code. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suited to standing, dancing and a potentially warm room. The venue often uses strobe lighting, particularly for club events. Anyone affected by flashing lights should take this into account before booking.

For standard gigs, doors are commonly around 7pm, with support acts followed by a headline performance and a strict 10pm curfew. Club nights usually run from 11pm until 3am, with later finishes of around 5am possible during August and the Christmas period. Individual event details take precedence.

Sound, Lighting and Production

The current February 2025 technical specification lists a D&B Audiotechnik system with two Q10 top cabinets and four B6 subwoofers, powered by D12 amplifiers. The venue says the system can produce more than 110dB at the mixing position. Front-of-house control is through a Midas M32 desk, with four monitor sends and four 15-inch/1.3-inch dual-concentric floor wedges.

The published microphone inventory includes six SM58 vocal microphones, Beta 57, Beta 52, Beta 91 and Beta 56 microphones, drum and guitar amplifier microphones, and Radial direct boxes. This is a serious small-room production package, but it does not mean every touring act can arrive without equipment: the venue does not supply full backline, and bands may need to bring amplifiers, cymbals, snare, kick pedal and other instruments.

Lighting is based around ten Martin Thrill Par 64 fixtures above the stage, three GU10 Sunstrip blinders framing it and two motorised colour LED strips. Control is through an Avolites Titan Mobile system. An older technical sheet also listed a projector, but the current hire specification does not confirm that projector as part of the standard package, so it should not be assumed for a particular event.

Accessibility and Inclusive Facilities

Sneaky Pete’s publishes a straightforward access description rather than presenting itself as fully accessible. There is one step at the front entrance, and staff can provide a ramp on request. Beyond the entrance, the venue is on one level through to the stage. A chair or stool can be arranged in advance, but there is no designated accessible viewing platform and the room can become crowded.

There is no accessible toilet or widened toilet provision inside the venue. The nearest accessible facility identified by the venue and local event-access guidance is at The Three Sisters, approximately 45-50 metres further along Cowgate. This is an important limitation for wheelchair users and anyone who needs an accessible toilet during a long club night.

Assistance dogs are permitted, and customers may bring medicines, medical equipment, food or drink needed to manage a medical condition. The venue offers free tickets for personal assistants or carers, usually through an option attached to the event booking. There is currently no access loop. Contact the venue in advance for specific arrangements, particularly for a sold-out show or a mobility aid larger than a standard wheelchair.

Because Sneaky Pete’s is in Scotland, ADA terminology does not apply. The relevant practical question is whether the venue’s entrance, toilets, crowd conditions and arrangements meet an individual visitor’s needs. The published information confirms useful adaptations, but it does not support describing the venue as step-free or fully wheelchair accessible.

Getting There and Parking

The venue is at 73 Cowgate in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Edinburgh Waverley station is approximately 500 yards away, although the walk includes steep sections both uphill and downhill. A practical route is to leave the station towards South Bridge, continue through the Old Town and descend towards Cowgate. Allow more time if using a wheelchair, mobility aid or heavy luggage because the surrounding pavements can be uneven and busy.

Cowgate itself is not served directly by regular buses. Nearby stops include South Bridge, Victoria Street, Merchant Street and Potterrow, all within a short walk, while Edinburgh’s tram network connects through the city centre and requires a walk from the nearest central stops. Routes and diversions change, particularly during the Edinburgh festivals, so check the departure information on the day.

There is no venue-owned car park. Venue guidance says parking on Cowgate is available after 6.30pm, but asks drivers not to stop immediately outside the club. Nearby Chambers Street is suggested for earlier parking or production vehicles. Council charges and restrictions vary by bay; Old Town daytime pay-and-display rates can reach £8 per hour, with the exact sign at the space taking priority.

Edinburgh’s city-centre Low Emission Zone operates continuously. Penalty notices have applied since 1 June 2024 to non-compliant vehicles driven inside the zone, so check your vehicle before driving into the Old Town. No dedicated rideshare rank is published; use a lawful stopping point on Cowgate or nearby streets and expect to walk the final short distance, especially during festival road closures.

Nearby Amenities

The Cowgate, Grassmarket, South Bridge and Royal Mile areas provide many options for pre-show food and drinks. Nearby choices include pizza and Italian street food, Scottish cooking, Indian food, burgers, cocktail bars and traditional pubs. Civerinos, Merchants, Mother India’s Cafe, The Piper’s Rest and House of Gods are all listed within a short walk, although opening hours and table availability vary substantially during August.

For a quick meal, plan to eat before joining the queue rather than relying on food inside the venue. For a sit-down meal, book early during festival season. Visitors staying nearby can choose from Old Town hotels and short-stay accommodation around the Royal Mile, Grassmarket and Victoria Street; Virgin Hotels Edinburgh is among the closest full-service options identified in local listings.

After a 3am finish, taxis and private-hire cars are usually the most direct option, while night buses serve parts of Edinburgh from central stops rather than from the venue door. Walking back to Waverley is possible, but festival crowds, uneven streets and late-night congestion make it sensible to plan the return journey before entering.

What Makes This Venue Special

Sneaky Pete’s matters because it offers a rare combination: a 100-capacity room, a serious sound system, nightly activity and a booking policy that allows new artists to share space with established underground performers. The venue’s management has described its approach as quality-led rather than genre-led, which explains why a punk bill, experimental electronic act, singer-songwriter or house DJ can appear in the same calendar.

Its cultural reputation has been recognised beyond Edinburgh. The venue was named the UK’s grassroots music venue of the year at the 2019 Music Week Awards and reached number 99 in an international 2021 club ranking. The latter described its decks as sitting directly on the dancefloor and highlighted the room’s ability to shift from live music space to club floor.

The venue has also campaigned on issues affecting small music spaces, including Edinburgh’s former “inaudibility” licensing clause and the adoption of the Agent of Change principle in Scottish planning policy. Its staff have supported sector-wide campaigns for funding and better protection for grassroots venues. That activity gives Sneaky Pete’s significance beyond its physical size: it is both a performance room and an advocate for the conditions that allow small venues to survive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh?

Sneaky Pete’s is at 73 Cowgate, Edinburgh EH1 1JW, in the Old Town. It sits between the Grassmarket and South Bridge areas, close to several pubs, restaurants and other nightlife venues. The entrance is directly from Cowgate, and the building can be easy to miss if you are walking quickly through the busy street.

Is Sneaky Pete’s still open in 2026?

Yes. As of 27 August 2026, Sneaky Pete’s is operating under its established name and publishing live gigs and club nights. Its announced calendar runs through the remainder of 2026 and includes events in 2027. It remains a functioning seven-night grassroots venue rather than a former venue or occasional festival space.

What is the capacity of Sneaky Pete’s?

The venue’s published capacity is 100 people. That figure applies to its compact live and club configuration and explains why popular events can sell out quickly. Some festival listings also warn that access to individual acts may be first come, first served, even when the wider festival ticket remains valid.

Does Sneaky Pete’s have seats?

Sneaky Pete’s is primarily a standing venue and has no fixed seating plan. There are no published balcony, reserved-seat or VIP areas. A chair or stool can be arranged for customers who need one, but this should be requested in advance. Arriving early makes it easier for staff to position seating without blocking the view or circulation route.

Are Sneaky Pete’s events general admission?

Most live gigs and club nights use general admission. Entry is not normally tied to a specific seat or standing position, so your viewing experience depends on when you arrive and how crowded the room becomes. For the clearest view, move beyond the bar and entrance area towards the performance space.

How much do tickets for Sneaky Pete’s cost?

Prices vary by artist and promoter. Published examples have ranged from about £5-£8 for some club nights to the low or mid-teens for touring artists, before booking fees. Larger or particularly in-demand shows can cost more. Treat any price shown for an individual event as event-specific rather than evidence of a fixed venue-wide tariff.

Can you buy Sneaky Pete’s tickets on the door?

Sometimes, but door sales are not guaranteed. The venue recommends advance purchase because the room holds only 100 people and popular gigs or club nights may sell out. If door tickets are available, bring accepted ID and a phone showing your booking or confirmation. Arriving early is especially important during August and festival periods.

What ID does Sneaky Pete’s accept?

The venue operates a Challenge 25 policy. Customers who appear younger than 25 may be asked for identification, and the published policy accepts passports and driving licences only. Other forms of ID are not accepted under the stated rule. Staff say they handle discrepancies between identification details and a customer’s identity discreetly.

What are the age restrictions at Sneaky Pete’s?

Gigs from Sunday to Thursday are 18-plus. Friday and Saturday gigs may be 14-plus, but anyone aged 14-17 must attend with a responsible adult. Club nights are 18-plus. Event-specific information takes priority, and under-18s at eligible shows may be subject to the venue’s stated breathalyser policy.

What time do gigs finish at Sneaky Pete’s?

Standard gigs generally open around 7pm and finish by a strict 10pm curfew. A typical running order has one or two short support sets followed by a headline performance around 9pm. Times can vary slightly by event, but the venue’s technical information makes clear that the 10pm finish is not normally flexible.

What time do club nights finish?

Club nights usually run from 11pm until 3am. During the Edinburgh festival period and around Christmas, some events may continue until approximately 5am. Check the individual event details before travelling because opening times, queues and late-night transport can change during major city-centre events.

Is Sneaky Pete’s wheelchair accessible?

There is one step at the front entrance, and staff can provide a ramp on request. The venue is level from the entrance through to the stage, but it has no dedicated viewing platform and can become crowded. It does not have an accessible toilet, so visitors should plan around the accessible facility identified nearby.

Does Sneaky Pete’s offer free tickets for carers?

Yes. The venue offers free tickets for personal assistants or carers supporting disabled customers. Many events include a personal-assistant ticket option during booking. If that option is absent, the venue’s published guidance says an arrangement can normally be made after purchasing the customer’s own ticket.

Does Sneaky Pete’s have an accessible toilet?

No. The venue states that it does not have widened toilets or an accessible toilet inside the premises. The nearest accessible facility identified in its access information is at The Three Sisters, approximately 45-50 metres further along Cowgate. This limitation is particularly important for long club nights or visitors requiring regular toilet access.

Does Sneaky Pete’s have a cloakroom?

A staffed cloakroom is not promised in the current venue information. Older visitor information and recent reviews have mentioned lockers or a lockbox arrangement, but availability may depend on the event and staffing. The safest approach is to bring only essentials and avoid assuming that large coats, bags or luggage can be stored.

Can I bring medication or medical food?

Yes. Sneaky Pete’s says customers may bring medicines, food or drink required to manage a medical condition, as well as medical equipment. If you expect difficulty at the door or need a particular arrangement, contact the venue before the event and explain the requirement clearly to the door team on arrival.

Does Sneaky Pete’s use strobe lighting?

Yes. The venue warns that strobe lighting is often used, especially during club shows. Live performances may also use bright, rapidly changing stage lighting. Anyone with photosensitivity or a condition affected by flashing lights should consider this before attending and ask event staff whether more information is available for a particular night.

Is there parking near Sneaky Pete’s?

There is no venue-owned car park. Venue guidance says parking on Cowgate is available after 6.30pm, but asks drivers not to stop directly outside the club. Chambers Street is suggested for earlier parking. Council charges and restrictions vary by bay, and Edinburgh’s Low Emission Zone means some vehicles may not legally drive into the city centre.

How far is Sneaky Pete’s from Edinburgh Waverley?

The venue is approximately 500 yards from Edinburgh Waverley station. The route is walkable but includes steep sections and busy Old Town streets. There is no direct bus service along Cowgate, so bus passengers normally alight at nearby South Bridge, Victoria Street, Merchant Street or Potterrow and walk the remaining distance.

What kind of music is played at Sneaky Pete’s?

The programming is intentionally eclectic. Expect emerging indie and alternative bands, punk, post-punk, electronic acts, folk, hip-hop, experimental pop, house, techno, disco, bass and queer club nights. The common thread is discovery and quality rather than a single genre, so checking the individual event description is more useful than relying on a standard house style.
