Events and Programming

Halloween in Evanston is not a single venue or a single ticketed festival. It is a citywide program spread across parks, business districts, community centers, the public library, Northwestern University and independent performance spaces. The strongest recurring themes are family trick-or-treating, outdoor nature programming, haunted attractions, costume parties, live music and seasonal arts events.

For 2026, the City of Evanston’s approved special-events calendar includes Zombie Scramble on October 17, Bug-A-Boo on October 24 and Trunk or Treat on October 30. Central Street has announced its annual trick-or-treat event for October 24, while the Evanston Public Library has scheduled Halloween storytime and a children’s dance party for October 31. Northwestern University’s Halloween-weekend programming includes a Halloween-themed symphony concert at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, and SPACE has announced a Little Miss Ann and Friends Halloween Concert for October 18.

Zombie Scramble is Evanston’s most distinctive active Halloween event. Participants run an approximately two-mile course through the Ladd Arboretum while zombies attempt to pull flags from belts representing their “lives.” The course includes challenge stations, safe zones, water, first aid and a post-event gathering with food trucks and s’mores. The 2025 edition was promoted as the 10th annual event and drew nearly 1,000 participants, placing the first edition around 2016 by inference.

Bug-A-Boo is the gentler, nature-focused counterpart. Costumed volunteers portray animals and guide families through the Ladd Arboretum while explaining local wildlife and adaptations. Recent versions have included outdoor exploration, Halloween games, crafts, campfires and s’mores. The Ecology Center identifies Bug-A-Boo and Zombie Scramble as its regular October seasonal events.

Trunk or Treat at the Robert Crown Community Center is designed for young children. Participating vehicles are decorated for Halloween and children collect treats in a controlled parking-lot setting. Recent editions have included city vehicles, firetrucks, police cars, construction vehicles, face painting, music and games. The 2026 listing describes it as free, open to all ages and especially suitable for children from birth to five.

Business-district celebrations create a less formal, walkable Halloween experience. Downtown Evanston’s Trick-or-Treat Stroll begins at Fountain Square, where families can collect a map before visiting participating businesses. Central Street combines business visits, Halloween crafts and a dance-party atmosphere, while the Main-Dempster Mile has organized “Spooky Saturday” activities, costume events and neighborhood shopping promotions. Participation varies by business, so visitors should look for participating-store signs rather than assume every storefront is involved.

There is also a performance strand. The 2021 fall calendar included the Rolling Clones at a Main-Dempster Mile fall event, while recent Halloween seasons have included DJs, dance parties, haunted-house entertainment and themed community performances. In 2026, the programming broadens to children’s music with Little Miss Ann and Friends at SPACE and classical repertoire at Pick-Staiger, including Die Fledermaus, Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique.

Recent Halloween Activity, 2021–2026

2021: Evanston promoted official trick-or-treat hours from 4 to 7 p.m., the Downtown Farmers’ Market Fall Fest, Main-Dempster Mile’s Spooky Saturday, a Downtown Trick-or-Treat Stroll and the Main-Dempster “Fairies & Scaries” fall event with the Rolling Clones.
2022: The city again set official trick-or-treat hours from 4 to 7 p.m. and promoted Main-Dempster Mile activities, costume photography and the annual pumpkin-composting collection after Halloween.
2023: The documented program included Bug-A-Boo, Zombie Scramble, Robert Crown Trunk or Treat, Downtown Evanston trick-or-treating, Main-Dempster Mile activities and the Central Street Halloween event. Central Street board minutes reported attendance of more than 800 people and positive feedback from businesses.
2024: The city promoted Zombie Scramble, Trunk or Treat, Bug-A-Boo, family pumpkin carving and Nightmare on Foster Street. Central Street, Downtown Evanston and Main-Dempster Mile each held their own family celebrations, and Northwestern hosted Truck or Treat at the Ryan Field construction site.
2025: The city’s lineup included the 10th annual Zombie Scramble, Bug-A-Boo, Trunk or Treat and Nightmare on Foster Street, while Downtown Evanston and Central Street again hosted business-district trick-or-treating. Northwestern returned with Truck or Treat, featuring construction equipment, games, candy and costume activities.
2026: Confirmed listings include Zombie Scramble, Bug-A-Boo, Trunk or Treat, Central Street Trick-or-Treat, Halloween family storytime, a children’s dance party, Little Miss Ann and Friends at SPACE and Northwestern’s Halloween-themed symphony concert. No specific 2027 or later Halloween program was identified in the material reviewed.

Tickets and Booking

Pricing depends on the organizer and event type. Free options have included Downtown Evanston’s business stroll, Central Street activities, Trunk or Treat, library programs and some community-center events. City recreation programs have historically ranged from about $5 for a haunted community-center event to $11 for residents and $15 for nonresidents for Bug-A-Boo. Family pumpkin carving has been listed at $35 for residents and $45 for nonresidents. Northwestern’s 2026 Halloween symphony concert is listed at $8 for the general public and $5 for students.

Zombie Scramble requires advance registration, a selected start wave and a signed liability waiver. The city’s published policy states that all participants must register, participants must be at least eight years old, and refunds are not issued unless organizers cancel the event. Registration has previously opened on August 1 and closed shortly before the event, although dates and prices can change by year.

Bug-A-Boo may also require registration for every participant, including adults. Trunk or Treat is the easiest option for families who do not want to reserve a place: the 2026 listing says registration is not required. Library programs are drop-in events, with costumes welcome but optional.

For the 2026 SPACE concert, the venue states that its in-person box office operates on show nights from 6 to 9 p.m., although an 11 a.m. children’s concert may use different door and box-office arrangements. For popular ticketed events, reserve as soon as registration opens, choose an early wave for family schedules and check the event-specific rules before traveling.

About Halloween in Evanston

Because Halloween is citywide, there is no single capacity, seating chart, stage, sound system or building history for “Halloween in Evanston.” Each event uses a different setting. The principal sites are the Ladd Arboretum and Ecology Center, Robert Crown Community Center, downtown and neighborhood business districts, independent theaters, the Northwestern campus and public library branches.

The city’s Halloween traditions have a longer history than the current event branding suggests. The Woman’s Club of Evanston’s history records the Fairy Tale Trail beginning in 1990 as a safe, non-scary Halloween experience for children of all abilities. The Northwestern University archives also document Pumpkin Prom as a recurring Halloween fundraiser and Project Pumpkin as a community trick-or-treat and craft event hosted through Norris University Center.

The current program matters because it combines institutions that serve different audiences. The Ecology Center provides environmental education, Robert Crown provides recreation and family services, downtown districts support local commerce, Northwestern contributes large-scale arts programming and independent venues provide professional music and theater. Halloween therefore functions less like a single festival and more like a seasonal network across Evanston.

Architecture, Layout and Technical Capabilities

The Ecology Center was built in 1974 and expanded in 2001 with a multipurpose room, corridor and vestibule. A classroom extension followed in 2015. The building totals approximately 6,200 square feet. A major renovation completed in fall 2025 added a new reception area, updated classroom, office and restroom spaces, structural repairs and all-electric mechanical systems intended to support zero on-site carbon emissions and LEED Silver certification.

The surrounding Ladd Arboretum is the atmospheric heart of Bug-A-Boo and Zombie Scramble. It is an open landscape rather than a conventional theater, so expect walking routes, temporary lighting, portable restrooms and event infrastructure instead of fixed seating, theatrical rigging or a permanent concert PA. Zombie Scramble’s documented setup includes two challenge stations, first-aid points, water stations, safe zones and a post-event gathering area.

Robert Crown Community Center was completed in 2020 as an award-winning replacement for the former facility, which had served Evanston since 1971. The new complex includes two NHL-size ice rinks, two full-size gyms, multipurpose rooms with audiovisual equipment, a library branch and accessible parking. Its architecture places a light-colored masonry building along the park edge, combining indoor recreation, education and landscaped outdoor space.

For concert-goers, SPACE is Evanston’s most relevant Halloween music venue. It is an intimate room with a capacity of about 250 for cocktail-style events, flexible cabaret, theater and standing layouts, and an approximately 2,000-square-foot room measuring 42 by 48 feet. The stage can extend to about 30 feet wide by 14.5 feet deep. The venue describes its technical inventory as a combination of modern and vintage equipment with professional sound, high-quality lighting, microphones and extensive in-house backline.

Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, the setting for Northwestern’s 2026 Halloween symphony, is a fixed-seat 1,003-capacity concert hall completed in 1975. Thirty adjustable sound reflectors help control projection and onstage communication. The hall is designed for orchestral, choral, band, jazz, folk, world and contemporary performances, making it a markedly different experience from SPACE’s close-up club atmosphere.

Seating and Viewing

Outdoor Evanston Halloween events generally use standing, walking or informal gathering areas rather than reserved seating. At Central Street and Downtown Evanston, the activity is distributed among stores, sidewalks and public plazas. Families should plan for movement between stops instead of expecting one central stage or a dedicated audience section.

Zombie Scramble is experienced from the course rather than from spectator seating. Parents and guardians may wait near the Ecology Center and fire-pit area while participants run. The course includes safe zones, and staff can help a frightened participant leave the route. The challenge stations require participants to remove their shoes, so practical clothing is more important than elaborate costume design.

SPACE offers the most flexible viewing arrangement. Depending on the event, guests may receive reserved cabaret seating, general-admission seats or standing-room access. The venue’s private-event information describes a flexible setup and the absence of obstructed views, but capacity and table placement can change with stage size and production requirements.

Pick-Staiger is the best choice for a traditional seated concert experience. Its acoustics and adjustable sound reflectors favor listeners who want clarity and balance rather than club-level volume. The hall’s concert information describes unobstructed views throughout the seating area, while the main lobby entrance is on the west side of the building.

Getting There and Parking

There is no single arrival point for Evanston Halloween. Check the event location carefully: the Ecology Center is at 2024 McCormick Boulevard, Robert Crown Community Center is at 1801 Main Street, Fountain Square is north of Davis Street in downtown Evanston, SPACE is at 1245 Chicago Avenue and Pick-Staiger Concert Hall is at 50 Arts Circle Drive.

Downtown events are well suited to public transportation. The CTA Purple Line and Metra Union Pacific North serve the Davis Street area, while the Main station connects with both the Purple Line and Metra. For downtown parking, the city’s garages charge $1 for up to one hour, $3 for one to two hours, $5 for two to three hours, $6 for three to five hours, $10 for five to eight hours, $12 for eight to twelve hours and $18 for twelve to twenty-four hours. City garages are free on Sundays and listed holidays.

Zombie Scramble has unusually specific parking guidance. Participants are encouraged to park at Ingraham Park at 2100 Ridge Avenue and use the event shuttle, which has previously operated from 2:30 to 10 p.m. Parking is restricted at the McCormick and Bridge Street lot, and street parking is limited. Walking, biking and public transportation are recommended.

Pick-Staiger visitors can use the Northwestern Lakeside Parking Structure at 1 Arts Circle Drive, where concert parking information states that parking is complimentary for concert attendees. The hall allows vehicle drop-off at the entrance, and accessible parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis for guests requiring it.

Robert Crown has on-site parking, including accessible spaces. For business-district events, arrive early enough to find a legal space and walk between stops; Halloween crowds can make short trips slower than expected. Rideshare users should use the specific event entrance or parking-lot edge rather than blocking a bus stop, fire lane or pedestrian crossing.

Inside the Events

Expect different atmospheres rather than one consistent “venue experience.” SPACE has a lobby and patio, a bar and a rustic-urban interior. Its event information also describes catered food and beverage service, including Union Pizzeria food for private functions. Pick-Staiger is a formal concert environment with a lobby, fixed seating and a lakefront campus setting.

The Ecology Center includes a nature classroom with live animal exhibits, educational displays and a multipurpose room. During outdoor Halloween programs, the building serves as the activity base while the arboretum provides the route. Zombie Scramble participants should expect temporary event facilities, portable restrooms, water points and food-truck service rather than a conventional lobby or concession stand.

Robert Crown is a large multipurpose community facility, not a dedicated Halloween theater. Visitors may encounter an active recreation-center environment with ice, gym, library and family-program traffic. Trunk or Treat takes place in the parking area, so the event experience is centered on decorated vehicles, face painting, music and treat collection rather than indoor stage production.

Nearby Amenities

Downtown Evanston, Chicago Avenue and Central Street are the easiest locations for combining Halloween activities with food and shopping because the events are integrated with existing business districts. Downtown’s Trick-or-Treat Stroll begins at Fountain Square, and Central Street’s programming is specifically designed to bring families into participating shops and restaurants.

SPACE is adjacent to Union Pizzeria, making it possible to combine a concert with food in the same building. Pick-Staiger is on Northwestern’s lakefront campus, with downtown Evanston restaurants along Davis Street and Sherman Avenue within a short drive or connecting trip. The city’s Halloween schedule does not establish official hotel packages or a single late-night transportation plan, so visitors attending evening events should arrange their return trip before the event ends.

Visitor Experiences and Community Impact

Available feedback is mostly event-level rather than a unified venue review. Central Street’s 2023 board minutes recorded more than 800 attendees, described the Halloween event as a success and noted that at least one business saw first-time visitors return. Organizers also identified a practical weakness: the schedule and event graphics could have been clearer. That is useful advice for visitors because activities may be spread across several locations and times.

The economic impact is strongest in the business districts. Downtown organizers have described trick-or-treating as valuable public relations for participating shops, even when parents do not make substantial purchases during the event. City planning documents identify Halloween programming in Central Street, Main-Dempster Mile and Downtown Evanston as examples of events that draw visitors, animate commercial areas and support Evanston’s identity as a destination for family activities.

The cultural impact is equally important. Fairy Tale Trail’s history emphasized a non-scary experience for children of all abilities, while current city policy provides formal accommodation procedures for residents who need modifications, communication assistance or other support. Northwestern’s Project Pumpkin likewise presents Halloween as a community activity built around trick-or-treating, crafts and shared participation rather than only private parties.

Visitor Tips and Information

For Zombie Scramble, arrive at least 20 minutes before your wave, complete the waiver and bring a flashlight, water and snacks.
Do not shine a flashlight directly into a zombie volunteer’s eyes.
There is no gear check at Zombie Scramble, so carry only what you can manage.
Participants under 18 need a guardian-signed waiver.
Ask a zombie to break character if a participant becomes frightened; course staff can assist.
Bug-A-Boo and other outdoor events may require advance registration for every member of a group.
Trunk or Treat is the simplest option for toddlers because it is free, does not require registration in 2026 and uses a controlled parking-lot format.
Costumes are encouraged or welcome at many events, but no general citywide dress code applies.
For accessibility accommodations, submit the city’s request as early as possible and preferably at least seven days before the event.
Bring reflective material or a flashlight for evening walking, particularly around the arboretum and neighborhood streets.
Check the exact event location before leaving home; “Halloween in Evanston” may refer to several events on different sides of the city.

The city has not published one universal 2026 trick-or-treat schedule in the material reviewed. In 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025, official hours were generally announced as 4 to 7 p.m., but families should wait for the current year’s city announcement rather than assume that schedule repeats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Halloween in Evanston a single venue?

No. Halloween in Evanston is a citywide collection of events hosted at parks, business districts, community centers, the library, Northwestern University and independent venues. The main recurring sites include the Ladd Arboretum, Ecology Center, Robert Crown Community Center, Fountain Square, Central Street, SPACE and Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Each location has separate policies, capacities, parking arrangements and ticket requirements.

What are the main Halloween events in Evanston for 2026?

The confirmed 2026 program includes Zombie Scramble on October 17, Bug-A-Boo on October 24, Central Street Trick-or-Treat on October 24, Trunk or Treat on October 30, library storytime and a children’s dance party on October 31, Little Miss Ann and Friends at SPACE on October 18, and Northwestern’s Halloween-themed symphony concert on October 31.

Is Zombie Scramble suitable for young children?

Zombie Scramble is for participants ages eight and up. It involves a roughly two-mile outdoor route, zombies attempting to take flags, challenge stations and nighttime conditions. Participants should be comfortable walking or running outdoors. Safe zones are provided, and zombies are instructed to break character if someone is frightened. Younger children may prefer Bug-A-Boo or Trunk or Treat.

Do I need to register for Zombie Scramble?

Yes. Every person running the course must register, select a wave and sign a liability waiver. Participants under 18 need a guardian’s signature. Registration has previously opened on August 1 and closed before the event, but the exact deadlines, prices and wave availability can change each year. Event-day entry should not be assumed, especially for popular waves.

Is Trunk or Treat free in Evanston?

The 2026 Trunk or Treat listing describes the Robert Crown Community Center event as free, open to all ages and not requiring registration. It is particularly aimed at children from birth through five years old. Families collect treats from decorated vehicles in the Robert Crown parking lot, with recent editions also featuring music, face painting, emergency vehicles and construction equipment.

Where does Bug-A-Boo take place?

Bug-A-Boo is based at the Evanston Ecology Center and uses the nearby Ladd Arboretum. The program combines costumed animal educators, nature interpretation, crafts and seasonal activities. The Ecology Center is at 2024 McCormick Boulevard. Because the event uses an outdoor route, visitors should allow time for walking and check the specific year’s instructions for registration, weather and accessibility information.

Does Evanston have official trick-or-treat hours?

Yes, the city normally announces official hours, but the time can depend on the year and calendar day. Recent announcements for 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025 used a 4 to 7 p.m. schedule. The 2026 material reviewed confirms several Halloween events but does not yet provide a universal trick-or-treat schedule, so families should not treat earlier times as automatically current.

Where can I hear live music around Halloween in Evanston?

SPACE is the main intimate concert setting, with the 2026 schedule including Little Miss Ann and Friends Halloween Concert. Northwestern’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall offers a larger classical experience with a Halloween-themed symphony program. Business-district celebrations have also featured DJs, dance parties and local performers. Music programming changes independently from city recreation events, so each listing should be checked separately.

How large is SPACE?

SPACE can accommodate about 250 guests for cocktail-style events. Its room is approximately 42 by 48 feet, or about 2,000 square feet, with flexible cabaret, theater and standing configurations. The stage can reach roughly 30 feet wide by 14.5 feet deep. Its intimate scale, professional sound and lighting, bar and table seating make it different from Evanston’s outdoor family events.

Does SPACE have reserved seating?

Seating depends on the individual show. SPACE may use reserved cabaret tables, general-admission seating or standing room. The stage configuration can affect sellable capacity, so a concert that uses a large production setup may feel different from an acoustic or children’s program. The venue describes its layout as flexible and its viewing areas as free from obstructed views.

How many people can Pick-Staiger Concert Hall seat?

Pick-Staiger Concert Hall seats 1,003 people. It is a fixed-seat concert hall on Northwestern University’s lakefront campus, with adjustable sound reflectors that help shape projection and onstage communication. It is suited to orchestral and choral concerts rather than the informal walk-around format of Central Street or the active course layout of Zombie Scramble.

Where should I park for Zombie Scramble?

Participants are encouraged to park at Ingraham Park, 2100 Ridge Avenue, and use the event shuttle. The shuttle has previously operated from 2:30 to 10 p.m. Parking is restricted at the McCormick and Bridge Street lot, and street parking near the Ecology Center is limited. Walking, biking and public transportation are recommended where practical.

Where should I park for Pick-Staiger’s Halloween concert?

Concert parking information identifies the Northwestern Lakeside Parking Structure at 1 Arts Circle Drive as the primary garage for Pick-Staiger events. Parking is described as complimentary for concert attendees, with accessible parking available on a first-come, first-served basis. The building’s main concert entrance is on the west side, and vehicle drop-off is available near the entrance.

Is Robert Crown Community Center accessible?

Robert Crown is described as a fully accessible building with accessible on-site parking. The complex includes two ice rinks, gyms, multipurpose rooms and a library. Halloween activities at the center may use the parking lot rather than the entire building, so guests who need a specific route, seating arrangement or assistance should request an accommodation in advance.

How do I request an accessibility accommodation?

The City of Evanston provides reasonable modifications, auxiliary aids and effective-communication services for city programs and activities. Its guidance asks visitors to submit an accommodation request as soon as possible and no later than seven days before the event. Outdoor events such as Bug-A-Boo and Zombie Scramble should be discussed in advance because route conditions and temporary layouts can vary.

Are Halloween events in Evanston good for toddlers?

Yes. Trunk or Treat is specifically recommended for very young children, and the library’s storytime and dance party provide indoor, low-intensity options. Downtown and Central Street strolls allow families to control the pace and leave whenever needed. Bug-A-Boo is family-oriented but uses an outdoor nature route, while Zombie Scramble is restricted to ages eight and older.

Can I bring a flashlight to Zombie Scramble?

Yes. Participants are encouraged to bring a flashlight, water and snacks because the course takes place outdoors after dark. Do not shine the beam directly into volunteer zombies’ eyes. There is no gear check, so use a small light and carry only essential items. Comfortable footwear is important, although the challenge stations require participants to remove their shoes.

Are there refunds for Zombie Scramble?

The published Zombie Scramble policy states that voluntary cancellations do not receive refunds, including cancellations caused by illness, injury, work conflicts or personal matters. Refunds are generally available only if event organizers cancel before event day. Weather procedures are handled separately, and participants are directed to check the event’s cancellation information when severe conditions are possible.

Does Evanston offer Halloween events after October 31?

Some seasonal programming continues into early November, including pumpkin-composting collections and Day of the Dead events. Those activities are related to the Halloween season but are not necessarily Halloween events. No specific 2027 or later Halloween program was confirmed in the material reviewed. Evanston’s recurring city, business-district and university programs are normally announced independently as the next season approaches.
