### About Belvoir Castle

Belvoir Castle—pronounced “Beaver”—is a Grade I-listed Gothic Revival castle, historic house, visitor attraction and events estate near Grantham. It remains the family home of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, rather than a conventional theatre or purpose-built arena. Visitors come for its State Rooms, art, gardens, parkland, family attractions, private celebrations and large outdoor events. Consequently, there is no single venue capacity or permanent seating plan.

The address used for ordinary castle visits is Belvoir Castle, Grantham, Leicestershire, NG32 1PA. Festival documents sometimes use NG32 1PE because major events occupy separate parts of the wider estate. The castle stands high above the Vale of Belvoir, close to the borders of Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Its panoramic location is magnificent, but the steep approach and exposed grounds are important considerations for visitors with limited mobility or poor weather.

### History and Architecture

Robert de Todeni, William the Conqueror’s standard-bearer, established the first castle here in 1067. The estate briefly entered royal control in the 12th century, suffered during the Wars of the Roses and passed to the Manners family through marriage in 1508. Parliamentarian forces destroyed the Royalist stronghold in 1649, after which it was rebuilt between 1654 and 1668 around a courtyard plan.

The present castle largely dates from 1801–1830. James Wyatt began transforming Belvoir into a romantic, battlemented Gothic palace, with Elizabeth, 5th Duchess of Rutland, taking an unusually influential role. A major fire in 1816 destroyed the north and east wings, the grand staircase and picture gallery; reconstruction continued under the Reverend Sir John Thoroton. The result is a vast quadrangular composition of towers, turrets and crenellated façades that looks medieval from afar but is principally Regency in date.

Inside, signature spaces include the 131-foot-long Regents Gallery, the gilded French Rococo-style Elizabeth Saloon, the Ballroom with a ceiling inspired by Lincoln Cathedral and the State Dining Room, whose elaborate ceiling contains 91 individually designed flowers. The castle served as a military hospital during the First World War and was requisitioned by the Army during the Second. Today it operates simultaneously as a family home, heritage attraction, filming location and events venue.

### Events and Programming

Belvoir’s programme is broader than a normal concert venue’s. The castle books heritage re-enactments, garden shows, outdoor theatre and cinema, equestrian displays, fireworks, classical picnic concerts, electronic festivals, sporting events, markets, family trails, workshops and elaborate Christmas experiences. Smaller activities take place in the State Rooms, gardens or Retail Village, whilst concerts and festivals use temporary event sites elsewhere on the estate.

- **2021:** the reopening season included a 1940s weekend, flower and garden show, open-air theatre, a lakeside tribute concert, the inaugural Festival of the Horse, Halloween activities, Regency Christmas and an illuminated garden trail with projection mapping on the castle.
- **2022:** Belvoir Revisited introduced medieval, Civil War, Napoleonic, 1940s and Steampunk weekends. Other programming included Platinum Jubilee celebrations, outdoor cinema and theatre, the garden show, Firework Champions, an expanded Festival of the Horse, the new four-acre adventure playground and a Cinderella-themed Christmas. Forbidden Forest also moved to the estate, establishing Belvoir as a significant electronic-music destination.
- **2023–2025:** recurring attractions included Forbidden Forest, Battle Proms, the Flower and Garden Show, summer firework championships, triathlon and multisport weekends, historical displays, Halloween trails and Christmas programming. The 2024 Retail Village season added maker workshops, choirs, carol singing, festive food and Santa experiences. Recent exhibitions have also explored the coronation, women associated with the castle and the estate’s family history.
- **2026 and beyond:** programming has included the tenth-anniversary Forbidden Forest, pirate-themed circus and family trails, the Flower and Garden Show, Battle Proms, multisport racing, vintage and craft markets, the Summer Safari, animal encounters, tours, free book and nature groups and a full Christmas season. Forbidden Forest has already confirmed a return over the late-May bank holiday in 2027, although its line-up remains subject to later announcement and licensing.

Prices vary substantially. Some markets and clubs are free; standard attractions and family activities generally cost from a few pounds to the mid-£20s; fireworks and special heritage days usually carry separate admission; and major multi-day music festivals cost considerably more. Outdoor programming is seasonal, weather-sensitive and often organised by independent promoters, so each event has its own age limits, entry rules and transport plan.

### Tickets and Booking

Standard ticket-office reference prices in 2026 are £26 for an adult Castle, Gardens and Playground ticket, £24 concession and £10 child. Gardens and Playground admission is £10 adult, £8 concession and £6 child, whilst Animal Park-only entry is £4.50 per person, with under-threes free. Guided castle and parkland bus tours have been offered as £5 add-ons. Online group offers may reduce these rates.

Book early for Christmas, Santa visits, afternoon tea, guided tours and popular family dates. Large festivals, Battle Proms, fireworks and private-promoter concerts require event-specific tickets; standard castle admission normally does not include them. Belvoir’s published seasonal terms have generally permitted rescheduling rather than refunds, so check the conditions shown during purchase before committing.

### Seating, Layout and Technical Production

Ordinary castle visits are free-flow or guided, with no audience seating plan. For private functions, the State Dining Room is listed for approximately 150 theatre-style, 120 at dinner or 175 standing; its published dimensions are 15.86 by 9.46 metres, with a maximum ceiling height of 5.5 metres. The Ballroom accommodates around 120 theatre-style, the Old Kitchen and Servants Hall up to 150, and the Balloon Bar up to 80 seated or standing. Exact safe capacities depend on layout and production.

There is no publicly documented permanent concert PA, lighting rig or fixed stage in the main castle. Private-hire information says audiovisual equipment can be supplied, whilst the Balloon Bar has its own sound system. Outdoor shows bring temporary staging, lighting, power and audio. Forbidden Forest’s 2025 production used L-Acoustics systems on every stage, including a K1 system on its Reactor stage, plus delay towers and cardioid speaker arrangements designed to focus sound towards audiences and reduce off-site noise.

### Getting There and Parking

Drivers approach from the A1 or A52 via Grantham and should follow brown tourist signs or event-specific traffic instructions. The main castle car park costs £4 for all-day parking and uses automatic number-plate recognition, with payment required on arrival. It opens 30 minutes before the attraction and closes 30 minutes after it. The Retail Village car park provides 2.5 hours free for its customers only. Overflow fields may operate during busy events.

Grantham is the nearest railway station. A pre-booked taxi generally takes around 15–20 minutes, depending on traffic. Limited local and demand-responsive buses serve the castle gates or nearby Woolsthorpe, but they are not a dependable solution for evening events. Major festivals may provide station shuttles, coaches, advance-paid parking and designated pick-up areas; their routes can differ from normal castle access. Do not park on village roads or attempt a long roadside walk.

### Inside the Venue

Day visitors normally check in at the Visitor Hub before walking uphill to the castle. The visitor route includes opulent State Rooms, family photographs and collections that make the building feel like an inhabited home rather than a conventional museum. Food and drink options include the castle tearoom, Belvoir Bistro, Balloon Bar, Farm Shop and seasonal outdoor kitchens. The Retail Village provides additional shopping, refreshments and castle merchandise.

Security and bag checks depend on the event. No permanent cloakroom is publicly advertised, so travel light. Large outdoor events install their own toilets, bars, food concessions, medical and welfare facilities. Mobile reception can vary across the wooded estate; arrange meeting points before separating from your group. Recent visitors particularly praise knowledgeable guides, architecture and views, whilst recurring criticisms concern the steep terrain, signage, parking enforcement, event traffic and inconsistent value at some seasonal activities.

### Nearby Amenities

The Retail Village is the easiest option for pre-event food because it sits at the foot of the castle and has its own short-stay parking. Nearby country pubs include The Chequers and Dirty Duck in Woolsthorpe and the Staunton Arms. The Manners Arms in Knipton, a former ducal hunting lodge with ten bedrooms, is one of the closest full-service places to eat and stay. Grantham offers the widest selection of hotels and late-opening services.

For evening events, reserve accommodation and return transport in advance. Rural taxis may be heavily booked when thousands of people leave simultaneously, and ordinary local buses may have finished. Festival camping or official transport is often more practical than relying on an unconfirmed late-night ride.

### What Makes Belvoir Castle Special

Few English venues offer such a dramatic combination of Regency interiors, wooded festival terrain and designed landscape. Capability Brown prepared plans for Belvoir in 1780; rediscovered estate drawings informed a major programme that began in 2013, clearing more than 500 acres to restore intended views. Formal gardens also reflect Elizabeth, 5th Duchess, and Harold Peto, whose boat-shaped Rose Garden design was rediscovered in the archives.

The castle’s cultural and economic role extends beyond admission tickets. Its Retail Village occupies restored estate workshops, markets provide trading space for local makers, and major events support hospitality, production and temporary employment. Those benefits come with pressures: festival licences require noise management, traffic planning and communication with surrounding villages. Belvoir therefore functions as both a nationally recognisable heritage attraction and a closely scrutinised part of its rural community.

### Visitor Tips and Accessibility

The Americans with Disabilities Act does not govern this English venue; access is considered under UK requirements and the limitations of a protected historic building. Only the castle’s ground floor is wheelchair accessible, with no lift to the upper State Rooms. Accessible toilets and Blue Badge spaces are available, and visitors with limited mobility may be permitted to drive closer to the castle. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout.

Wear supportive footwear: paths may be steep, grassy, gravelled, rooted or muddy. Ordinary dogs are welcome on leads in the grounds, outdoor dining areas and much of the Retail Village, but not inside the castle, Farm Shop or Adventure Playground. Festival accessibility is managed separately and may include an access campsite, accessible toilets and showers, a Changing Places unit, equipment charging, medication refrigeration and companion arrangements.

Allow at least three hours for the castle and gardens and longer with children, lunch or a tour. Arrive early enough to park, check in and handle the climb. For concerts, bring weatherproof layers and only event-permitted chairs or picnic equipment. Drones, professional filming, alcohol, food, bags and photography can be subject to different rules for each production, so never assume normal daytime policies apply to a ticketed event.

### Frequently Asked Questions

#### Is Belvoir Castle still open to visitors?

Yes. Belvoir Castle continues to operate under that name as a family home, heritage attraction and events estate. The castle, gardens, playground, Animal Park and Retail Village have different opening times, and private functions or filming can occasionally close particular areas. The attraction operates throughout much of the year, with its fullest programme normally running from spring through Christmas.

#### How do you pronounce Belvoir Castle?

Belvoir is traditionally pronounced “Beaver”, not “Bell-vwah”. The name is Norman French and means “beautiful view”, an appropriate description of the extensive outlook from the castle hill across the Vale of Belvoir. Using the local pronunciation is useful when speaking to taxi drivers, hotel staff or residents around Grantham and the surrounding villages.

#### Is Belvoir Castle actually in Grantham?

The castle is in Leicestershire, close to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire boundaries. Grantham, in Lincolnshire, is the nearest sizeable town and railway station, which is why the postal address and event listings commonly describe the venue as Grantham. The estate’s borderland position can produce slightly different county descriptions and postcodes on ordinary attraction and festival material.

#### How long does it take to visit Belvoir Castle?

Allow two to three hours for a basic castle and garden visit, or most of a day if adding lunch, a guided tour, woodland walks, the adventure playground, Animal Park and Retail Village. The castle tour alone is approximately 90 minutes. Families and garden enthusiasts usually need longer, especially because the attractions are spread across different levels of the estate.

#### Can I visit the gardens without entering the castle?

Yes. Gardens and Playground tickets are sold separately from full Castle, Gardens and Playground admission. This is useful for repeat visitors, families primarily using the play area or anyone unable to negotiate the castle’s upper floors. Garden access still involves natural gradients and uneven surfaces, and not every woodland route is suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters or pushchairs.

#### Is there a fixed capacity for concerts at Belvoir Castle?

No. Belvoir is an estate containing multiple indoor rooms and temporary outdoor event sites rather than one auditorium. Indoor capacities range from about 80 in the Balloon Bar to approximately 150 theatre-style in the State Dining Room. Festival capacity is determined by the licensed site plan, infrastructure and organiser, so attendance claims should not be treated as the castle’s permanent capacity.

#### Are there seats at outdoor events?

It depends entirely on the production. Classical picnic concerts may permit guests to bring low-backed chairs and rugs, whereas electronic festivals are predominantly standing events with rest areas. Fireworks, theatre and cinema events may have their own reserved, general-admission or bring-your-own-seating arrangements. Only take furniture specifically permitted by the event rules, as chairs may be prohibited in dense standing areas.

#### What is the best place to watch an outdoor performance?

For stage events, a central position in front of the main delay line usually gives the most balanced temporary sound and view. Picnic concerts reward arriving early and selecting level ground away from paths. Avoid the extreme edges if seeing performers clearly matters. At fireworks, a slightly rearward position can provide a broader view and may make departure easier once the finale ends.

#### Can wheelchair users tour the whole castle?

No. Wheelchair access is limited principally to the ground floor because the protected historic structure has staircases but no visitor lift to the upper State Rooms. Some gardens are accessible, although steep slopes and uneven surfaces remain. Visitors needing closer parking or a drop-off arrangement should organise this before arrival rather than attempting the main hill without assistance.

#### Is Belvoir Castle suitable for pushchairs?

Pushchairs can be useful around parts of the grounds and Retail Village but are awkward inside the historic castle and on steep or uneven garden routes. A baby carrier is often the easier option for the State Rooms. A pushchair parking area has previously been provided near the Porter’s Lodge, although families should check the arrangements applying on their particular visit.

#### Can I bring a dog to Belvoir Castle?

Well-behaved dogs are welcome on leads in the grounds, outdoor dining areas and many parts of the Retail Village. They are not permitted in the castle, Farm Shop or Adventure Playground. Owners must clean up after them. Assistance dogs have broader access and are welcome throughout the estate, including inside the castle. Water bowls are available at dining areas.

#### Is parking included with admission?

Not for an ordinary castle visit. The main castle car park currently has a separate all-day charge and is monitored through number-plate recognition. Payment should be made on arrival. Retail Village customers receive limited free parking in its separate short-stay car park. Concerts and festivals may use different fields, prices and advance parking permits, so follow the instructions issued with that event ticket.

#### Can I walk from Grantham railway station?

It is not a practical visitor walk. The castle is roughly nine to ten road miles from central Grantham, and the rural approach lacks the convenience expected around an urban venue. A pre-booked taxi is the simplest normal option. Limited buses and demand-responsive services may help during daytime visits, whilst major festivals sometimes provide dedicated shuttles from Grantham.

#### Where should I eat before an event?

For convenience, use the Bistro, Farm Shop or other facilities around the Retail Village before heading uphill or entering an event site. Nearby village alternatives include The Chequers and Dirty Duck in Woolsthorpe, the Staunton Arms and the Manners Arms in Knipton. Reserve tables on major event days because local kitchens have limited capacity compared with the crowds the estate can attract.

#### Does Belvoir Castle have a dress code?

There is no general dress code for daytime admission. Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes are far more useful than formal wear. Smart casual clothing suits afternoon tea and some private functions. Historical balls, themed weekends and hospitality packages may specify costumes or smarter attire, whilst outdoor festivals require practical layers, sun protection and footwear suitable for grass, roots and mud.

#### Can I take photographs inside Belvoir Castle?

Personal photography may be allowed on the normal visitor route, but restrictions can apply around private family areas, artworks, filming activity and special exhibitions. Flash, tripods or professional equipment should not be assumed permissible. Commercial shoots require prior arrangements through the private-hire operation. Concerts may also prohibit professional cameras or video recording under the performer’s production rules.

#### What happens if an outdoor event has bad weather?

Most outdoor programmes continue in ordinary British rain, so bring waterproof clothing rather than relying on an umbrella, which may be restricted or obstruct views. Performances can be delayed, altered or cancelled if wind, lightning, flooding or ground conditions create a safety risk. Ticket validity, refunds and rescheduling are controlled by the individual organiser, not necessarily by standard castle admission policies.

#### Is Forbidden Forest part of a normal castle visit?

No. Forbidden Forest is an independently organised, age-restricted electronic-music festival held on a separate part of the Belvoir Estate. It has dedicated tickets, camping, security, transport, accessibility arrangements, bars and production infrastructure. The normal castle attraction may operate differently around the festival period, and surrounding roads can be considerably busier during build, arrival and departure days.
