Invergordon Leisure Centre

Invergordon

Events and Programming

Invergordon Leisure Centre is primarily a community leisure and sports facility rather than a concert, theatre or touring-performance venue. Its regular programme is built around public swimming, family pool sessions, swimming lessons, aqua fitness, gym sessions, group exercise, indoor sport, youth activities and private hire. The available 2021–2026 listings reviewed do not establish a regular programme of concerts, comedy, theatre or named touring artists at this venue, so visitors should think of “what’s on” here as scheduled activities and sports rather than a traditional entertainment calendar.

The pool programme is the centre’s most consistent public-facing schedule. The published late-summer 2026 timetable includes length swimming, open swimming, family-friendly sessions, feature sessions with the flume and water features operating at intervals, Aqua Fit, Ducklings parent-and-toddler classes, adult lessons, additional-needs sessions, over-50s swimming, quick dips and children’s pool-party slots. During swimming lessons, Ducklings and some specialist sessions, the pools are closed to general users; the sauna, steam room and spa arrangements also vary by session.

Dryside programming is similarly varied. The 2026 programme lists Pilates, Les Mills Pilates, Body Balance, Body Pump, Body Attack, Zumba, indoor cycling, functional training, technique classes, Dynamic Wellbeing, Otago falls-prevention exercise, Aqua Aerobics, cardiac rehabilitation and supervised Teen Gym. Many adult classes are marked as 16-plus, while Teen Gym is designed for young people aged approximately 11 to 16.

The four-court sports hall supports football, badminton, basketball and martial arts, with both club bookings and casual hire available. The summer 2026 Active Schools programme shows the facility being used for indoor football, dance, badminton, Rocketball, dodgeball, soft archery and youth gym sessions. This gives a clear picture of the venue’s usual programming: practical, participatory activities with strong provision for children, teenagers, families and local clubs.

Recent verified examples include a free community open day held in November 2024, featuring Aqua Aerobics, racket sports, Pilates, Zumba, indoor cycling, Body Pump, Teen Gym, football, multi-sports, boccia, gym inductions and older-adult wellbeing activities. In 2021, the centre was also used for post-lockdown swimming and a local holiday-hub programme involving sport tasters such as rugby, tennis coaching and racket skills.

Other activity-based events have included children’s swimming initiatives, intensive holiday lessons, a swimming technique and skills week promoted in collaboration with a nearby swimming club, and a Judo Scotland development event for children aged five to 12. These examples indicate that occasional specialist workshops and club-led events are more representative of the venue than commercial performances.

Tickets and Booking

There is no conventional theatre box office or season-ticket programme. Visitors book individual activities, classes, court time, pool sessions, lessons, room hire or private parties through the operator’s booking system, app or reception. Some public swims can be attended on a walk-in basis, but pre-booking is sensible for family sessions, Aqua Fit, popular classes, swimming lessons and pool parties because capacity and staffing can affect availability.

Published 2024–2026 schedules place adult pay-as-you-go swimming and centre classes broadly between £7.50 and £8.55, with concession rates around £4.50 to £5.15. Racquet-sports sessions are listed at approximately £6.75 to £7.80. The 2026 schedule lists games-hall hire at £61.05, room hire at £21.50 per hour, one-hour pool hire at £107.20 and a pool party including half an hour of room use at £117.60. Charges can change by programme period, concession status and activity.

The published 2026 membership options include an all-inclusive individual membership at £28.99 per month or £347.88 annually, and a family option at £42.99 per month or £515.88 annually. A budget scheme offers eligible customers activities at 50p with proof of entitlement. The operator’s general rules state that bookings and prices may change, and that selected activities may carry additional charges.

About Invergordon Leisure Centre

The centre is a wet-and-dry leisure complex on Academy Road in the Inverbreakie and Saltburn area of Invergordon. Its facilities include a 20-metre swimming pool, learner and baby pools, a flume and water features, a poolside sauna, steam room and spa, an air-conditioned Technogym gym, a separate strength-and-conditioning area, a four-court sports hall, studio, squash court, meeting room and treatment room.

The swimming-pool extension was completed in 1996 for Ross and Cromarty District Council and later completed under Highland Council. The architect’s description says the pool extension was designed to create a warmer, more welcoming character alongside the more utilitarian existing sports-centre structure. The project cost was recorded as £1.2 million. A local archive records Prince Andrew opening Invergordon Sports Centre in 1996.

Later investment included extension and internal-alteration work recorded as complete by 2015, with a reported value of £815,000. Fitness-equipment procurement followed in 2016, while council records also identify a new plant room and flood-rectification works in 2023. These improvements help explain the centre’s mixed character: an older sports-centre shell combined with newer fitness, access and plant infrastructure.

Seating and Layout

Invergordon Leisure Centre does not publish a fixed auditorium seating plan because it is not configured as a seated performance hall. The sports hall is a flexible four-court space with a published maximum capacity of 400, but that figure should not be read as a permanent seated audience capacity. The available information does not confirm retractable grandstands, fixed theatre seating, VIP sections, a stage or a standard concert configuration.

For sporting activities, the best position depends on the booking: court users need a clear view of the playing area, while pool visitors should choose sessions according to whether they want lane swimming, family use, water features or quieter specialist access. A viewing gallery exists, but the operator specifically notes that some upper-level areas, including the gallery, are not accessible.

No published acoustic, lighting or sightline assessment is available for performance use. The sports hall is suitable for participatory indoor activities and community hire, but visitors should not assume it has the theatrical acoustics, installed PA, stage lighting, rigging points or concert production infrastructure found at a dedicated arts venue.

Getting There and Parking

The centre’s address is Academy Road, Inverbreakie, Saltburn, Invergordon, IV18 0LB. From Invergordon High Street, the published walking route runs east, turns right onto Castle Road, then right onto Academy Street; visitors follow the leisure-centre sign and take the path on the left. The stated walking time is approximately 12 minutes, while the cycling time is about three minutes.

Invergordon railway station is the nearest rail connection, approximately 15 minutes away on foot. The closest listed bus stops are Invergordon Academy, served by routes 7 and 8, and MacKean Crescent, served by routes 25 and 25A. Route 25 and 25A services connect Invergordon with places including Inverness, Alness, Tain and Brora, although visitors should check the day’s timetable before travelling.

Drivers approach from the A9 by turning onto Academy Road and following signs for the centre. Customer parking is available on site, including accessible spaces, and an electric-vehicle charging station is listed at the leisure-centre car park. The published information does not state a standard customer parking fee, so visitors should not assume that a charge applies or that spaces can be reserved.

Inside the Venue

Regular visits begin at reception or through the operator’s member-entry system. Members are expected to present their membership card unless using an approved fast-track system; membership cards are non-transferable and may be linked to a stored facial photograph for identification and security. Visitors attending classes or hired activities should allow time for check-in, changing and any required induction.

The building contains separate dryside and wetside changing areas, with accessible changing provision on both sides. Earlier facility information describes a dryside accessible room with an adult-sized height-adjustable changing bench, ceiling-tracking hoist, shower seat, accessible toilet and space for assistance. Poolside provision includes an accessible changing area, adjustable shower and pool and spa hoists. Poolside lockers have historically required a refundable £1 deposit.

The meeting room is described as a bright room with a television for presentations, tea-and-coffee facilities and a sink. The published facility information does not set out a bar, restaurant, coat check, merchandise counter, event-style bag policy or dedicated concert security arrangements. Food and drink provision should therefore be treated as activity- or booking-specific rather than assumed as part of a performance visit.

Nearby Amenities

Invergordon town centre and the High Street are within a short walk of the centre, making it practical to combine a swim or sports booking with a café stop or takeaway. Listed local options include Rasho’s Café and Takeaway, Café Tomich, Clootie McToot, McGinty’s and other High Street cafés and food businesses. Opening hours can be limited outside daytime and peak tourist periods, so an evening visitor should plan food before arriving.

Tuckers Inn on Saltburn Road provides a bar, restaurant and accommodation close to the waterfront, with 12 en-suite rooms. It can be a useful option for visitors staying overnight, although its distance and availability should be checked when planning an early or late leisure-centre booking.

What Makes This Venue Special

The centre’s distinctiveness comes from its role as a multi-generational community base rather than from celebrity performances. The same building can host a baby swimming class, a family flume session, a cardiac-rehabilitation group, a teenagers’ gym hour, a local badminton booking, a martial-arts session and a community open day. That range is particularly important in a Highland town where a single facility serves recreational, educational, health and social purposes.

Its 1996 pool extension is also architecturally notable at a local level. The design deliberately softened the harder sports-centre character with a warmer pool environment, while the water cannon, flume, learner pool, baby pool and feature sessions give the building a family-leisure identity beyond a basic training pool.

Future planning documents identify a proposed £1.8 million programme to expand changing-room capacity, provide additional parking, upgrade the swimming pool, improve aquatic provision and add a synthetic pitch. The project is linked to wider Invergordon Academy refurbishment or replacement plans and is described as prioritised within the operator’s ten-year capital programme, but no confirmed completion date is published.

Visitor Tips and Information

Check the pool timetable before travelling. “Open swimming”, “length swimming”, “family friendly”, “feature session”, “additional needs”, “lessons” and “pool party” are different uses with different facilities and admission conditions. The flume and water features are not operating during every swim, while the deep end may be roped off during family-friendly sessions.

For children’s swimming, a responsible accompanying person is defined as someone aged 16 or over who can swim. The published Invergordon admissions policy requires a one-to-one adult-to-child ratio for children aged zero to three during public sessions, and one adult to two children aged four to seven. Family-friendly sessions allow one adult to supervise two children aged zero to seven. Children aged eight and over may use the pool unaccompanied, although supervision remains recommended.

The sauna, steam room and spa are for customers aged 16 and over. They are unavailable during some children’s, additional-needs and lesson sessions, while capacity is capped during adult lessons. Adult fitness classes, cardiac rehabilitation and other specialist activities may have their own eligibility requirements, so read the session description before booking.

Accessibility provision is substantial: level access to the main entrance and reception, lift access, wheelchair access throughout, accessible toilets, accessible parking, guide-dog access, a hearing loop, a wet room or level-entry shower and pool and spa hoists are listed. The important limitation is that some upper-level areas, including the viewing gallery, are not accessible, although the gym can be reached by lift.

Visitor reviews commonly praise the friendly staff, family pool features, cleanliness, gym equipment and welcoming atmosphere. Some reviewers have reported cold water, crowded or inconsistently managed lane sessions, changing-room concerns and limited access at busy times. These comments are individual experiences rather than official performance data, but they suggest booking ahead and checking the session type are sensible precautions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Invergordon Leisure Centre a concert or theatre venue?

No. It is a community leisure facility centred on swimming, fitness and indoor sport. The sports hall can be hired for community activities and events, but published information does not establish a regular concert, theatre, comedy or touring-artist programme. Visitors looking for performances should treat any special event as an exception rather than the venue’s normal offer.

What is usually on at Invergordon Leisure Centre?

Regular activities include public swimming, length swimming, family sessions, flume and water-feature sessions, swimming lessons, Aqua Fit, Ducklings, adult lessons, additional-needs swimming, over-50s sessions, fitness classes, Teen Gym, badminton, indoor football, basketball, martial arts and squash. Seasonal youth programmes and holiday swimming courses are also promoted.

How do I book an activity?

Activities can be booked through the operator’s booking system, app or reception. Pre-booking is particularly sensible for fitness classes, Aqua Fit, swimming lessons, family sessions, pool parties and popular holiday programmes. Some public swims and casual activities may accept walk-ins, but availability can depend on capacity, staffing, school use and private hire.

How much does swimming cost?

Published 2024–2026 schedules show adult swimming at roughly £7.50 to £8.55, with concession prices around £4.50 to £5.15. Eligible customers using the budget scheme may pay 50p. Charges can change between timetable periods, and special lessons, parties, private hire and other activities have separate prices. Check the applicable session before booking.

How much is a fitness class?

In the published 2026 programme, centre classes are listed at £8.55 for adults and £5.15 for concessions, with a 50p budget rate for eligible users. Some specialist sessions may have different conditions or charges. Class spaces are limited, and the timetable advises booking in advance, particularly for indoor cycling, Aqua Fit and popular evening sessions.

How long is the main swimming pool?

The main pool is 20 metres long and is generally described as a four-lane pool. Published directories differ slightly on the width, recording either approximately eight or 8.5 metres. The same listings identify an 8-metre learner pool and a smaller 6-by-3-metre baby pool. It is suitable for recreation and training, but shorter than a standard 25-metre competition pool.

Does the pool have a flume?

Yes. The centre describes a flume, water cannon and water features. They do not operate continuously: feature sessions switch them on at regular intervals, while open swimming generally provides pool access without the flume and water features. Family sessions may also use the features, subject to the supervisor and the session’s admission arrangements.

What is the sports-hall capacity?

The sports hall has a published maximum capacity of 400. This is the stated capacity for the flexible hall and is not a guaranteed seated audience capacity. The facility is designed for four-court sport, including football, badminton, basketball and martial arts. No permanent grandstand, theatre seating plan or performance-specific configuration is published.

Are there seats for spectators?

A viewing gallery is referenced in the accessibility information, but the venue does not publish a conventional spectator seating map. Seating may therefore depend on the club, class, competition or private booking using the hall. Some upper-level areas, including the viewing gallery, are not accessible, so spectators with mobility requirements should confirm the arrangement for a particular booking before attending.

Is parking available?

Yes. Customer parking is available at the centre, including accessible spaces. An electric-vehicle charging station is also listed at the leisure-centre car park. The available venue information does not state a standard parking charge or reservation system, so visitors should allow extra time during school, family or club activity periods when demand may be higher.

How far is the railway station?

Invergordon railway station is the nearest station, listed as approximately a 15-minute walk from the centre. The published walking route from the High Street takes about 12 minutes, but the station approach and personal pace may make the full journey slightly longer. Follow the town streets towards Castle Road and Academy Street before taking the signed path.

Which buses serve the leisure centre?

The closest listed stops are Invergordon Academy, served by routes 7 and 8, and MacKean Crescent, served by routes 25 and 25A. These services connect Invergordon with surrounding towns including Alness, Tain and Inverness. Bus frequencies vary by day and school term, so check the current timetable before relying on a late connection after an evening booking.

Is the building accessible for wheelchair users?

Listed access features include level access, a step-free main entrance and reception, lift access, wheelchair access throughout, accessible toilets, accessible parking, a hearing loop, guide-dog access and a wet room or level-entry shower. Accessible changing areas are provided on both dryside and wetside areas, with hoists and adapted equipment described for changing and pool access.

Can children swim without an adult?

Children aged eight and over may use the pool unaccompanied under the published policy, although supervision is recommended. Children aged four to seven require one responsible adult for every two children, while children aged three and under require one-to-one supervision during public sessions. Family-friendly sessions allow one adult to accompany two children aged zero to seven.

What age is the sauna and spa for?

The sauna, steam room and spa are available to customers aged 16 and over. Their availability depends on the pool timetable: they may close during Ducklings, additional-needs sessions, primary lessons, centre lessons and pool parties. During adult lessons, the sauna and steam-room capacity is capped at 10 customers.

Does the centre offer swimming lessons for adults?

Yes. Adult lessons are listed in the pool programme and are bookable by block. The published timetable identifies adult lessons as 16-plus. The pool is unavailable to the general public during the lesson, while the sauna, steam room and spa may remain available subject to the session rules and the stated capacity limit.

Can I hire the sports hall for a private event?

Yes. The sports hall is available for club bookings and casual hire, and the centre also lists meeting-room, studio, treatment-room, squash-court, pool and pool-party hire. The 2026 price schedule gives indicative charges for games-hall, room, pool and party hire, but availability, staffing, activity type and any additional requirements should be confirmed at the time of booking.

Are improvements planned for the centre?

A Highland delivery programme identifies a proposed £1.8 million project involving larger changing-room capacity, additional parking, swimming-pool upgrades, aquatic provision and a synthetic pitch. It is linked to wider Invergordon Academy plans and prioritised within a ten-year capital programme, but the published document does not provide a firm construction or completion date.

What should I check before travelling?

Check the exact pool or class timetable, because public access changes around lessons, school use, staff training, feature sessions, private parties and specialist programmes. Confirm whether your session needs advance booking, bring suitable swim or sports equipment, allow time for changing and parking, and do not assume that the flume, sauna or spa will be available during every visit.
