Baja Cantina

Marina del Rey

About Baja Cantina

Baja Cantina is a storied Mexican restaurant-and-bar in Marina del Rey that opened in September 1975 . Housed in a quonset-hut style building dating to the 1940s (originally built to house oil field workers) , it has since become a local landmark. The owners describe it as “where the spirit of Baja meets the Venice Beach vibe” , which captures its mix of coastal Baja California flavor and laid-back Southern California surf culture. Over the decades Baja Cantina has kept a casual, beachside atmosphere – think textured stucco walls, picnic tables, palm-frond tiki décor and a sand-covered patio under real palm trees . It seats roughly 100 people total , spread across indoor dining areas, a covered porch and a large open-air “beach” patio. The patio even features a real sand pit and a tiki-style bar for extra beach-club vibes . Signature features include oversized margaritas, a wide tequila selection, flat-screen TVs for games, and a friendly, unpretentious vibe that’s made it famous among locals. Originally a hobby shop and flower store in the 1960s, Baja Cantina became an authentic Mexican restaurant in the ’70s and even absorbed a neighboring lunch spot (the old “Brown Bagger”) as it grew . Today it commemorates a 50+-year history with its rustic charm intact – visitors often note that it “survived a renovation without losing its soul” . Despite updates, the venue maintains a casual, family-friendly feel that has been woven into Marina del Rey’s culture for generations .

Events and Programming

Baja Cantina isn’t just a restaurant – it’s a live-music venue. Most weekends it hosts live performances covering many genres, from surf-rock and indie bands to Latin and country-themed DJ dance parties. For example, its 50th anniversary weekend (spring 2025) included a country-music day party with local band Coastal Cowboy Productions and tastings of tequila and wine . Other past acts have ranged from rock and reggae bands rehearsing original and cover sets to salsa/Latin DJs throwing themed dance nights. A recurring event series is “Otra Noche,” Baja’s popular Latin dance party – for instance, in May 2026 it ran a Cinco de Mayo fiesta with DJs Niño Genesis and Jacobo Vela . There have been reggae and folk bands, tribute acts, and even seaside brunch concert events. No matter the genre, “Live music and DJs keep the energy up at night” in the big open-air space. Most shows start early evening (often around 7–9 PM) and run late into the night. Cover charges are generally modest – many live gigs only ask for a small door fee or even no ticket at all. For instance, a 2025 DJ dance party charged about $10 at the door . Typically cover prices range on the order of $10–$20 per person, depending on the headliner or theme party. Baja also runs special programming for holidays and local events (Cinco de Mayo, Halloween, 4th of July, etc.), usually advertised on its social media or community calendars. Food and drink specials often coincide with events – for example, concert-night flyers might highlight drink packages or taco platters. In short, Baja Cantina offers a lively, varied schedule: locals can expect live bands or DJs most weekends, along with holiday parties or anniversary celebrations that keep the marina crowd coming back.

Tickets and Booking

The venue operates more like a restaurant bar than a theater, so there is no classic “box office.” Here’s what to know about tickets and reservations:

Most live nights are open to walk-in customers – no advance ticket is needed unless it’s a special headliner show or themed party. On typical music nights you can just arrive and pay at the door or order a meal as usual. If an event does require a ticket, the venue or promoter will sell it online or at the door. (For example, some dance parties are ticketed on Eventbrite or similar platforms.)
Popular shows and themed parties often have a cover charge rather than formal tickets. The cover is usually low – on the order of $10–$15 per person . The door price, if any, is announced in advance by the band or Baja’s event listings.
There is no physical box office building or window. For special events, tickets (if available) can typically be purchased online through Baja Cantina’s website or social media (they often link to an external ticket site). On-the-day cover charges are paid at the door or bar.
If you’re dining or in a party of several, you can reserve a table by phone or through general reservation services (not exclusively through Baja Cantina’s own system). In practice, many groups simply arrive earlier to claim a preferred spot.
It’s wise to get information early: check the latest event announcements or call the restaurant if in doubt. For big events that sell out (holiday bashes, headliners), buy tickets as soon as they go on sale. Smaller local gigs usually allow door entry with no presale.

Seating and Layout

Baja Cantina’s space is casual and flexible. There are no assigned seats – it’s first-come, first-served. The venue is essentially one large open area divided into sections: a covered indoor lounge (with couches and a fireplace), a partially covered patio, and a truly beach-style outdoor lounge with sand for a floor . A wooden bar sits inside along one wall. Guests can grab bar stools, picnic tables or lounge chairs in any section. A music stage sits at one end of the patio area.

**Best viewing spots:** If you want to watch a performance, position yourself in the front sand-floor lounge near the stage. That area has good sightlines and ample room to stand or dance. For a more relaxed meal or to chat, the covered patio tables and indoor lounge keep you out of bright lights and wind.
**Capacity and space:** The total seating capacity is roughly 100 patrons . The sandy patio makes the venue feel spacious (and casual). Note that part of the “floor” is sand, so it’s a fun beach vibe but slightly uneven underfoot.
**VIP/sections:** There is no formal VIP area. Some patrons might say the indoor lounge or corner table areas feel a bit more secluded, but generally everyone shares the same big space. Private parties can book sections for large groups, but in normal operation use any open table.
**Acoustics:** Because so much seating is outdoors, sound can spread. Outdoor seats will hear live bands clearly, but may also pick up street noise. If you’re sensitive to loud music, one of the covered seating areas towards the back may be quieter.
**Accessibility:** Switchback ramps and level paths connect most areas, and the venue is listed as handicapped accessible . Selecting seats near the main entrance or fire pit area is easiest for wheelchair access.

Getting There and Parking

Location: Baja Cantina sits at 311 Washington Blvd in the Marina del Rey center (a block from Admiralty Way). It’s about 1 block west of the Harbor’s main intersections. Its exact address is often given as 311 Washington Blvd ).

Driving and parking: The restaurant has a small private parking lot . Customers are welcome to use it when space is available, but it often fills up on busy nights. Nearby street parking on Washington Blvd and surrounding streets is metered or time-limited. If you park on the street or in a nearby lot, be careful of any posted time limits. For paid options, there is a 400-space parking garage at Venice Blvd (about a 7-minute walk) and city lots in Marina del Rey. For example, Parkopedia lists a Venice Beach garage (400 spots, ~7 min to Baja) and Marina Lots #10 (203 spots, ~14 min walk) . These city-run lots charge hourly rates. Rideshare drop-off is easy: just ask the driver to stop on Washington Blvd right in front of the restaurant entrance.

Public transit: There is no train station in the marina, but several bus lines stop nearby. L.A. Metro’s Route 33 runs west on Washington from Santa Monica to Downtown L.A. and stops at Washington Blvd (within one block of Baja Cantina). Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus has lines that serve Washington Blvd (e.g., the 15/16 routes run east-west along Washington). If taking transit, get off at Washington & Palawan or Washington & Via Dolce, which are very close. Once you arrive at those stops, it’s a short walk to the patio entrance.

Other tips: The building’s front entrance is off Washington itself. If walking from the nearby Mother’s Beach, head north on the park-Traction clinic then left on Washington. The venue is only a couple blocks from Admiralty Way (the inner harbor road). Because traffic can back up, leaving early for peak hours is recommended. Nearby hotels (see below) may offer shuttles, and taxi/Uber drivers generally know the address. GPS or map apps will guide you to the Marina del Rey shopping area near the Spring St lot.

Inside the Venue

While Baja Cantina feels like a big outdoor pub, its indoor amenities are straightforward. Upon entering, you’ll likely be led to a table or the outdoor deck. Complimentary chips and fresh salsa are brought out soon after sitting, as a courtesy to all diners . The full menu is Mexican-themed beach fare – standard items like tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, and burritos feature heavily . One menu tip from diligent visitors: the fish tacos and homemade tortillas are customer favorites . The kitchen also offers some unique items (for example Los Angeles reviewers noted new additions like Yucatán chicken mole and grilled elotes ). Daily food specials (like taco nights or brunch combos) may appear on chalkboards. Servers will tack on salsa and chips automatically; the lunch and dinner menu prices are generally moderate (most entrées under $30 ).

The bar inside has a full array of cocktails, beers and soft drinks. As expected, margaritas rule the drink menu – you can order them by the glass or as a “flight” sampler of multiple citrusy margarita styles . The tequila selection is unusually extensive (the new ownership expanded it) , so tequila flights and shots are common orders. Mexican beers and signature tropical cocktails are also served. The bar is one of the livelier spots to stand and mingle before or after a set. (Patrons note that Baja’s drink prices are fair by Marina del Rey standards – e.g., ~$10 for margaritas, ~$6–8 for beers, ~$5 shots depending on brand.)

Other inside tips: there is coat-hanging space by the door, but no formal coat check. Bathrooms are located off the main dining area; the patio seating and stage are clearly visible from inside. On busy nights, the outdoor speakers and indoor music keep the volume high. Wifi access is sometimes available (ask your server), but assume it’s not guaranteed. The atmosphere is relaxed: expect conversations, party music, and the ambient smell of the ocean breeze mixed with tacos and grill.

Nearby Amenities

Baja Cantina sits in the heart of the Marina del Rey village, so there are many useful nearby options:

Dining: Just blocks away at 4175 Admiralty Way is the Marina del Rey Hotel’s Beachside Restaurant & Bar , which overlooks the water and offers upscale American/Mediterranean cuisine. Fisherman’s Village (east on Admiralty) has seafood eateries like Killer Shrimp and King Harbor Grill. For casual fare within a short walk, the marina’s Docksider bars and cafés (Acqua Bar, Cast & Plow in the Ritz-Carlton, etc.) are all accessible by a 5–10 minute walk or quick bike ride.
Bars: If you want pre- or post-show drinks, nearby choices include the marina’s cocktail lounges (like the Wet Deck rooftop bar at the Ritz-Carlton a block away) and neighborhood taverns (the Sherman Oaks Hess’s boxing gym has a modest dock bar). Heading 2 miles west brings you to Venice Beach’s full nightlife. Within walking distance in the marina, however, Baja’s own bar is usually the liveliest scene.
Hotels: If staying overnight, major hotels are close. The Marina del Rey Hotel is about 0.3 miles east (even closer to Baja than its own Beachside restaurant ). The nautical-themed Foghorn Harbor Inn on Admiralty Way is under 0.6 miles north. Another option is the Los Angeles Marriott or Curio Resort (a bit farther north). All are only a short drive (or bike ride) and make good bases for guests who want to be steps from Baja Cantina. Popular vacation rentals and bed-and-breakfasts also dot on the peninsula.
Other: You’ll find several coffee shops and mini-markets along Washington Blvd next door, which are handy for quick pre-show snacks or picking up bottled water. If arriving early, consider strolling to the adjacent marina park or mother’s beach to enjoy the harbor views before the music starts. Late at night, rideshare or city shuttles arrange easily from outside the entrance.

What Makes This Venue Special

Baja Cantina stands out among L.A. venues for its authentic beachside character and deep local roots. It isn’t a glitzy Hollywood club but rather a decades-old marina tradition – a place where families, volleyball teams (from nearby Mother’s Beach) and tourists have congregated for margaritas for generations . Its history alone is special: the same rustic building serving food and drinks since 1975 . The owners emphasize preserving the original “Baja beach club feel” (sand, palms, casual fun) even while modernizing amenities . Many patrons say Baja Cantina captured the soul of a coastal Baja vacation in the heart of L.A., and it “survived a renovation without losing its soul” . This authenticity – from the sandpit patio to the wall of agave spirits – is why the venue has a loyal following. For artists, it’s also beloved: the open-air patio and informality create a relaxed performance space that feels friendly rather than intimidating. Culturally, Baja Cantina is woven into Marina del Rey’s fabric – locals cite it as a place where memories are made (birthday brunches, game nights, casual meetups) . In short, Baja Cantina is special because it’s not just a place to eat and drink, but a 50-year-old slice of California beach culture, offering warmth and character that visitors find unique.

Visitor Tips and Information

Accessibility: The venue is wheelchair-friendly with level entrances and plenty of open space . Staff can assist with seating if needed. Most indoor pathways and a ramped exterior patio are ADA-compliant.
Dress code: Extremely casual – shorts, flip-flops, sundresses and beachwear are fine . There is no formal dress requirement. Bring layers or a light jacket for evening, since it’s partially outdoors and can get chilly.
Arrival: On busy nights (weekends or concert events) plan to arrive 30–60 minutes early. Lines or waits for tables often form. If you have a large group, consider splitting into smaller parties or burdening arriving early to save seating.
What to bring: Meets standard restaurant guidelines – ID for alcohol (even if ordering dinner, always have ID in case you hit the bar). No outside food or beverages are allowed (water is fine). Small bags are OK, but avoid large backpacks. Sunscreen and hats are smart for daytime, since some seating is in the open sun.
Age policy: All ages are welcome during dining hours (daytime and early evening). The scene stays family-friendly through dinner/brunch. After 9 or 10 PM it shifts to a bar/crowd that tends to be 21+ (drinkers only). Children are allowed but note that music and noise levels rise later.
Pets and service animals: Service animals are allowed. For pet owners, dogs on a leash are generally welcome in the outdoor patios (this is a patio-friendly beach venue), but pet policies can be enforced by law. Bringing your dog on a Tuesday brunch? Usually fine, just ask staff for pet water bowl.
Smoking: By law, smoking (cigarettes) is only allowed in the outdoor seating area. The indoor section is smoke-free. Vaping and e-cigarettes likewise are restricted to outside.
Photography and devices: Casual photography is fine (people often take selfies on the beach patio). There is no strict photo ban, but try not to disrupt performers or other guests. Wi-Fi is not prominently advertised – if needed, you can ask if any PIN or guest network is available.
Payment: Major credit and debit cards are accepted at the bar and tables. No cash-only policy. However, it’s handy to have some small bills for tipping. Typical tipping recommendation is 15–20%.
Common mistakes: Don’t assume anything is guaranteed. Check the schedule ahead of time – some nights have special events, others are just casual dining. Do not arrive after “doors” for a show – once dining closes, late arrivals may be turned away. Also, remember that part of the venue is sandy and drinking near water can be messy, so wear shoes you don’t mind getting sand on.
Contact and updates: For the latest info, follow Baja Cantina on social media or sign up for any newsletter. They post event updates and possible weather-related notices. Since it’s a long-time LA spot, staff are very used to tourists’ and locals’ questions, so don’t hesitate to call the restaurant with any queries (during business hours only) .

How can I buy tickets or make reservations for events at Baja Cantina?

Baja Cantina does not have a traditional box office. For most normal nights (dinners with background music), no ticket is needed—just walk in. For special concerts or parties, tickets or RSVPs may be sold online through the event promoter (or Baja’s own website) or collected at the door as a cover charge. Always check the venue’s announcements. To reserve a table for dinner or a private event, you can call the restaurant or use a general restaurant reservation service. In short, tickets (if required) are typically handled via online event listings, and covers usually range $10–$20 .

What are the typical ticket prices or cover charges at Baja Cantina?

Most events at Baja Cantina have no separate ticket—they rely on food/drink sales. When there is a cover charge (for bigger shows or parties), it is usually very affordable. For example, some DJ dance nights have had a $10 cover , and typical range is about $10–$15. Occasional headliner concerts might be slightly higher, but generally a night out at Baja (food + one drink) fits a moderate budget.

Where can I park and are there any parking fees near Baja Cantina?

Baja Cantina has a small private parking lot for patrons (usually free for customers), but it fills up quickly on busy nights. Street parking is available along Washington Blvd and side streets (beware of meter rates and time limits). Nearby pay lots include Venice Beach’s Washington Blvd garage (about 400 spaces, ~7 min walk) and Marina del Rey Lot #10 (203 spaces, ~14 min) . These public lots charge hourly rates. Rideshare drop-off on Washington Blvd right in front is often the easiest option if parking is scarce.

Which public transit routes serve Baja Cantina?

While there’s no rail station in Marina del Rey, bus service is available. Metro Bus Route 33 runs along Washington Blvd, with nearby stops at Washington & Palawan or Washington & Via Dolce (just a short walk from Baja Cantina). Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus also has routes along Washington (such as lines 15 and 16). You can get off at Washington Blvd stops and walk one block east to the restaurant. Taxis and rideshares (Uber/Lyft) also service the area directly to the entrance on Washington Blvd.

Does Baja Cantina have reserved seating or is it general admission?

Seating at Baja Cantina is general admission. There are no pre-assigned seats or theater-style rows. When you arrive, you can sit at any available table or bar stool, on a first-come basis. For larger events, you may reserve a table in advance for dining, but during music nights everyone shares the common areas. Arriving early helps you get a prime spot, especially on weekends and event nights.

Where are the best places to sit for watching a performance or catching a game?

For live music shows, the front sandy patio area (closest to the stage) gives the best view and room to stand or dance. If you prefer to sit, choose tables in that open area facing the stage. For sports games or quiet meals, the covered indoor/outdoor lounge tables towards the back or sides are better (they have TVs and a bit more shelter). The indoor section with the fireplace offers a comfy spot for casual dining, though it’s farther from the music. Ultimately, any view works; the venue is small and most spots have a decent line-of-sight to the band.

What is the dress code at Baja Cantina?

The dress code is very casual . Beachwear, shorts, T-shirts, flip-flops or sandals are all appropriate. People often come in summer attire, even bringing sunglasses or hats for mid-day outdoor seating. There is no need for anything fancy – Baja Cantina’s vibe is laid-back. Just be prepared for cooler temperatures after sunset if you’re sitting outside; layering a light sweater or jacket is wise.

Are children or pets allowed at Baja Cantina?

Yes. During dining hours, Baja Cantina is family-friendly and welcomes children at the tables. Friendly dogs are also usually allowed on the outdoor patios (most patrons bring leashed pets). During evening bar hours, it becomes a mostly adult environment, but there is no strict age cutoff posted – minors are generally permitted if accompanied by a parent. Note that after dark (typically after 10 PM) the crowd leans toward 21+, so it’s mostly adults at that time.

Does Baja Cantina accept credit cards, and do they have Wi-Fi?

Major credit and debit cards are accepted throughout the restaurant and bar (Visa, MasterCard, etc.). It’s best to pay by card and include tip (15-20% is customary) in your total. Baja Cantina does not prominently advertise free Wi-Fi, so assume service is not guaranteed. If needed, you can ask a server if a guest network is available; otherwise cellular reception is generally good near Washington Blvd.

Is Baja Cantina accessible for guests with disabilities?

Yes, Baja Cantina is wheelchair accessible . The entrances and restroom are ADA-compliant, and there are flat pathways connecting the main seating areas. Staff can help accommodate guests who need extra assistance (e.g. moving to a suitable table). Keep in mind that one dining area has a sand floor which is reachable by ramp, but it is somewhat uneven, so mention any difficulties to your host.

Are outside food or drinks allowed inside the venue?

No, outside food and beverages are not permitted. Baja Cantina has its own full kitchen and bar, and all food/drink must be purchased there. (They do offer free chips & salsa as starters , so you don’t have to bring snacks.) The only exception is often bottled water for infants or medical reasons, but in general plan to order everything on-site. This is standard for restaurants in Los Angeles.

Can I take photos or videos inside Baja Cantina?

Yes, casual photography is fine. Many guests take pictures of the ocean view, decor or stage. Just be respectful: flash photography might disturb the performers, and avoid filming other patrons without permission. There is no official photography ban in this open-air setting, so feel free to capture memories. (Many people especially enjoy taking photos on the sandy patio or with Baja’s colorful branding.)

How do weather conditions affect the venue?

Because Baja Cantina relies on outdoor spaces, weather matters. In cool or rainy weather the owners often set up heaters and awnings. In fact, they’ve added covered decks and heated patios to keep guests comfortable . Nevertheless, heavy rain or extreme cold can be disruptive. If a major storm is forecast, it’s a good idea to call and confirm that an event will still go on. On warm sunny days, shade is available under umbrellas, and sunscreen is wise for midday visits. Evenings can be chilly near the water, so bring a light jacket.

What are Baja Cantina’s opening hours?

Baja Cantina is open daily for lunch and dinner. The schedule is roughly 12:00 PM–9:30 PM Monday–Thursday, 12:00–10:30 PM on Friday, 11:00 AM–10:30 PM on Saturday, and 11:00–9:00 PM on Sunday (hours may vary for holidays or special events) . The bar may stay open later than the kitchen on weekends. Weekend mornings also often feature a brunch menu (typically 10 AM–2 PM). Always check the current schedule online or call ahead before you go.
