Events and Programming

Historic Hofheimer Building is an active restaurant, nightlife and event destination at 2818 West Broad Street in Richmond. Its public calendar is built around recurring weekly entertainment, locally produced performances and occasional building-wide ticketed parties rather than a conventional concert season. Current programming includes Harry’s LIVE local-music sets, Novella late-night DJ sessions, Thursday Analog bring-your-own-vinyl evenings, sing-along brunches, rooftop brunch, creative workshops, hospitality-industry gatherings and interactive tasting or game-show events. The schedule can be busy from midweek through Sunday, with several different activities sometimes using separate floors on the same night.

Music is deliberately broad. Recent artist recruitment has covered acoustic music, jazz, Americana, country, blues, reggae, soul, rock and DJs. Harry’s LIVE has presented Richmond-area and regional performers including Grace Street Seven, Mighty Joshua Band, Jared Stout Band, Mackenzie Roark, Dylan Benjamin, Caroline Vain, Ramona Martinez and numerous singer-songwriters. Some sets accompany dinner or rooftop service and require only a reservation, while others use the Loft as a more traditional standing concert room.

The building also has a recognizable strand of immersive, costume-forward nightlife. Its recent calendar has included Gatsby galas, Vampire Balls, morbid masquerades, a Prince celebration, Halloween parties and a River City Pirate Ball, commonly combining DJs, live musicians, themed cocktails, costume contests, photographers, vendors and charity collections. Soulful-house and Afro-house events, swing dances, hip-hop celebrations, Pride programming, rooftop holiday parties and multi-floor New Year’s Eve events demonstrate how easily the property shifts from listening room to dance venue.

The verified 2021-2026 record is unusually varied. It includes Dan Schutt Band’s blues-rock and funk, an indie-oriented Dark Room series, Bio Ritmo’s benefit performance for Ukraine relief, a HearRVA music mixer, an Ignite RPS education fundraiser, drag brunch and a Pride artisan market, house-music Loft parties, Anomalis Radio, Anyfolk songwriter gatherings and Virginia Hip-Hop Foundation programming. The rooftop also provided the setting for Richmond jazz-funk band Butcher Brown’s 2021 remote Tiny Desk performance.

Many restaurant-based music nights and listening-room events are free or reservation-led. Recent workshops and brunch entertainment have generally fallen around $15-$25, while themed dance parties and costume balls have often started around $20-$30, with premium tiers sometimes reaching $40-$50. Elaborate New Year’s Eve packages have historically cost more. Prices, food inclusions and floor access vary considerably, so the live event listing should be treated as the definitive guide for each performance.

The venue publishes programming on a rolling weekly basis rather than announcing a year-long season. Research completed on August 23, 2026 found no full Hofheimer 2027 season, which is consistent with its short-lead mix of local performances, restaurant entertainment and independent promoter events.

Tickets and Booking

Ticketed events are normally sold through the event’s online checkout, while dinner performances may use table reservations and some community programs rely on free registration. A permanent walk-up box office is not advertised. Door sales and covers are event-dependent; Novella DJ nights, for example, may add a cover, while popular themed balls have sold out before the event. Buying early is particularly important for costume events, holiday parties, sing-along brunch seatings and limited-capacity rooftop sections.

Read the ticket description carefully. Admission to the Loft or Library does not always include reserved seating, dinner, drinks or rooftop access. Some special events divide the building into separate packages for standing admission, bar seating, tables and multi-floor access. When attending with a group, purchase together if the event promises grouped table placement. Taxes, service charges and food-and-beverage minimums may be added depending on the program.

About Historic Hofheimer Building

The Hofheimer is a roughly 14,400-square-foot, three-level adaptive-reuse venue with a restaurant, several event rooms and an outdoor rooftop. It was constructed in 1928 for the Herold R. Hofheimer Fine Rug Company. A 1937 rear and rooftop addition incorporated an elevator and an elevated work area where cleaned rugs could be hung to air-dry. The second floor later served as a rug showroom and, for several decades, a dance school; Adam’s Camera Shop occupied ground-floor space before the modern redevelopment.

Developer Carter Snipes acquired the property in 2015 and converted it into dining, entertainment and event space, reopening the restored building in 2016. The HofGarden beer-garden concept operated from 2017 until it was replaced in October 2023 by Harry’s at Hofheimer, a cocktail-focused restaurant. That change began another phase of interior renovation, including a new mezzanine and the remodeling of event areas now marketed as the Library, Loft and Rooftop.

Seating and Layout

The current published room capacities are 75 in Harry’s Restaurant, 125 in the second-floor Library, 300 in the second-floor Loft and 150 on the third-floor Rooftop. These numbers should not be added together as a guaranteed whole-building capacity: legal occupancy depends on the rooms opened, furniture, production equipment and event plan. No reliable public source gives complete room-by-room length and width measurements.

The Loft is the principal performance room. Its detailed setup guide lists up to 300 people standing for concerts, 240 in presentation seating, 200 for cocktails, 150 for seated dinners and 120 in a classroom arrangement. It contains hardwood floors, white and exposed brick, historic rafters, large windows, a central skylight, a built-in bar and movable farmhouse tables, chairs and high-tops.

Most public music events do not have theater-style reserved seats. For bands, a central position facing the performance area offers the most direct sound and view; the rear and bar edges are better for conversation but can become crowded. Hard floors, brick and high ceilings give the Loft a lively, energetic acoustic rather than the tightly controlled sound of a purpose-built theater. Guests sensitive to volume should avoid standing directly beside speakers and consider carrying discreet hearing protection.

The Library suits smaller listening sessions, receptions and pre-parties, with lounge furniture and a more intimate scale. Rooftop sightlines prioritize Richmond views rather than a formal stage. Seating there may consist of tables, bar stools, railing positions and standing areas, depending on the event. Weather and capacity can restrict access even when other floors remain open.

Getting There and Parking

The address is 2818 West Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia 23230, near the boundary between Scott’s Addition and the Museum District. From Interstate 64 or Interstate 95, use the Arthur Ashe Boulevard exit and approach by West Broad Street. The property has no on-site parking lot; the 1937 building expansion consumed the original site area that might otherwise have served as parking.

Visitors use street spaces and paid public lots around Scott’s Addition. Parking enforcement resumed on January 5, 2026. Although many residential blocks continue to have unlimited free spaces, higher-demand commercial streets include one-, two- and three-hour zones, paid spaces, loading areas and no-parking sections. Always follow the sign beside the individual space rather than relying on older visitor advice. Parking near the venue becomes difficult during weekend nightlife, baseball and major neighborhood events.

Route 50 stops at Broad Street and Sheppard Street, immediately beside the venue area. The GRTC Pulse bus rapid transit line serves the Scott’s Addition station a short walk west on Broad Street, with connections toward downtown, Main Street Station, VCU, Willow Lawn and Rocketts Landing. Route 20 also connects at the Scott’s Addition Pulse station. The building provides a curbside loading zone for rideshare pickup and drop-off, making rideshare a practical option when parking is tight.

Inside the Venue

The experience changes by floor. Harry’s serves modern American food, cocktails, beer and wine, while weekend brunch and late-night menus support daytime parties and DJ nights. The rooftop has its own drinks and food service, outdoor seating and views toward the Science Museum of Virginia, The Diamond and the surrounding city. Bars are also built into the main event rooms, reducing the need to move between floors during private functions.

Entry screening varies. Age-restricted nightlife requires valid government-issued photo identification, while bags, photography and re-entry are controlled by the individual promoter if not stated as a venue-wide policy. There is no publicly advertised permanent coat check. Merchandise appears for selected artists, markets and themed events rather than through a year-round merchandise counter.

The Loft offers internet, dimmable lighting and optional access to a projector, screen and basic speaker system. The Library has dimmable lighting, televisions and optional audio. However, the venue explicitly describes its in-house audio, video and lighting inventory as limited; performing artists may need to supply their own engineer, stage, lighting and production equipment. No permanent concert PA specification, lighting plot, mixing-console model or detailed technical rider is publicly posted.

Nearby Amenities

Arriving early leaves time to eat either inside the building or elsewhere in Scott’s Addition. Walkable neighborhood choices include Tazza Kitchen for wood-fired cooking, ZZQ for Texas-style barbecue, Pinky’s for Mediterranean-inspired dishes, Kismet for modern Indian food, Moore Street Cafe and Toast. Bingo Beer Co, Buskey Cider and other neighborhood taprooms provide casual pre-show drinks, although entering late after visiting several locations can be risky for sold-out programs.

Courtyard Richmond Scott’s Addition is a convenient neighborhood hotel for overnight visitors and wedding groups. Additional hotels in the Museum District, downtown and around Willow Lawn are generally a short rideshare trip away. For late-night departures, arrange a ride before closing; transit service continues into the evening, but frequency and the final trip vary by route and day.

What Makes This Venue Special

The exterior is one of Richmond’s rare examples of Exotic Revival architecture. Distinctive elements include glazed mosaic tile, arched openings, Mediterranean-style roof details and an onion-domed tower. Local lore says some facade tile was left over from construction of the former Mosque Theater, now Altria Theater, although the venue presents that story as a rumor rather than documented fact.

Inside, original rafters, aged wood, exposed brick, skylights and industrial surfaces preserve the building’s working history. The steel-and-concrete rooftop, originally a practical rug-drying structure, has become one of its defining social spaces. This combination of preserved industrial character and playful 1920s-inspired hospitality lets events feel historic without becoming formal or museum-like.

The Hofheimer’s wider significance comes from adaptive reuse and community programming. Its redevelopment preserved a recognizable Broad Street landmark while adding restaurant employment, event activity and pedestrian traffic. Fundraisers have supported local schools, food relief, musicians, hip-hop organizations and international aid. The venue also gives emerging performers a relatively intimate platform, although no independently audited economic-impact total has been published.

Visitor Tips and Information

The building has an elevator serving its public areas and ADA restrooms on the second floor. Service animals are welcome without documentation or fees when controlled and housebroken. The venue does not publish details about hearing loops, sensory rooms, captioning or permanent companion-seat locations, so guests needing a specific accommodation should notify the event organizer before arrival.

The entire property, including the rooftop, is smoke- and vape-free. It is family-friendly before 8 p.m., with minors under 18 accompanied by an adult; from 8 p.m. until closing it operates as a 21-and-older venue. Individual concerts and independently promoted events may impose stricter age rules. There is no universal dress code, although late-night and themed events sometimes request cocktail wear, costumes or “dress to impress” attire.

Recent visitors commonly praise the building’s visual character, flexible rooms, rooftop, cocktails and staff support, particularly for weddings, brunches and creative events. Recurring criticisms concern street parking, slow service during busy periods, high noise levels and occasional communication problems during private-event planning. Arriving early, confirming exactly which floor your ticket covers and allowing extra time for parking address the most frequent practical complaints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Historic Hofheimer Building still open?

Yes. As of August 23, 2026, the building remains open as the Historic Hofheimer Building, with Harry’s at Hofheimer operating its restaurant, cocktail, music and nightlife programming. The property continues to advertise weekly happenings, private events, rooftop service, weekend brunch and live performers. Some listings shorten the name to “The Hofheimer” or “The Hof.”

What is the exact Hofheimer Building address?

The official visitor address is 2818 West Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23230. Some historic planning documents and older directory listings use 2816 West Broad Street for portions of the same property, but current venue materials consistently direct guests to 2818. The entrance is on Broad Street near Sheppard Street at the southern edge of Scott’s Addition.

How many people does the Hofheimer Building hold?

Capacity varies by room and setup. Current published figures are 75 for the restaurant, 125 for the Library, 300 for a standing Loft event and 150 for the Rooftop. The Loft drops to approximately 240 for presentations, 200 for cocktails and 150 for seated dinners. Production equipment and furniture can reduce those totals.

Are Hofheimer events seated or standing?

Both formats are used. Dinner music, workshops and brunches generally include tables, while dance parties and larger Loft concerts are commonly general admission and standing. Some special events sell reserved rooftop tables, bar seats or separate access tiers. The room’s maximum capacity should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every ticket holder receives a chair.

Does every ticket include rooftop access?

No. Rooftop access depends on the event, operating capacity and weather. A Loft or Library ticket may cover only the second floor, while some premium packages include multiple levels. Other nights leave the rooftop open to ordinary restaurant guests. Read the access description closely, especially for fireworks, New Year’s Eve and building-wide celebrations with tiered admission.

Does the Hofheimer Building have its own parking lot?

No public on-site lot is advertised. Guests rely on street parking and public lots around Scott’s Addition. Restrictions are actively enforced in selected areas, and the legal time limit can change from one block face to another. Rideshare is often the simplest choice on Friday and Saturday nights, and the building has a loading area for pickup and drop-off.

What is the closest public transportation?

GRTC Route 50 serves Broad Street and stops at Broad and Sheppard beside the venue area. The Pulse Scott’s Addition station is a short walk west and provides fast service along the Broad Street corridor toward downtown, VCU, Main Street Station and Willow Lawn. Route 20 connections are also available at the Scott’s Addition station.

Is the Hofheimer Building wheelchair accessible?

The venue states that an elevator reaches all public areas and that ADA restrooms are available on the second floor. The modern conversion was planned to provide full accessibility to every floor, including the rooftop. Because seating layouts and temporary stages vary, guests who need a clear wheelchair position or additional assistance should arrange it before the event.

Are children allowed at the Hofheimer?

Children and teenagers may enter during family-friendly operating hours, but guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The regular venue becomes 21 and older at 8 p.m. Ticketed promoters can set their own stricter limit, and many costume balls, DJ parties and late-night events are explicitly 21-plus. Always use the age printed on the individual listing.

Do adults need identification?

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID whenever alcohol is served or the event is listed as 18-plus or 21-plus. Staff may check identification at the entrance and again at a bar. Costumes and masks do not replace the requirement to show your face for verification. Guests without acceptable identification should not expect admission to age-restricted nightlife.

What is the Hofheimer bag policy?

No single building-wide size limit for handbags or backpacks is publicly posted. Promoters may establish their own screening and prohibited-item rules for concerts or large parties. The safest approach is to carry only a small bag and essential personal items. Outside drinks, alcohol and food should be left at home unless an event description expressly permits them.

Can visitors eat dinner at the venue?

Yes. Harry’s at Hofheimer serves dinner, weekend brunch, cocktails and late-night food, while the rooftop has food and beverage service during its operating season. A concert ticket does not automatically include a meal. For dinner-linked music, reserve enough time to order before the performance; crowded kitchens and bars can run more slowly during major multi-floor events.

Is smoking allowed on the rooftop?

No. The venue describes the entire building and rooftop as smoke- and vape-free. That rule applies even though the rooftop is outdoors. Guests who leave to smoke should not assume that re-entry is permitted, because re-entry procedures vary by event. Service animals are accepted in public areas, but ordinary pets are not covered by the venue’s published service-animal policy.

Is there a dress code?

Ordinary dinners, local music and rooftop brunch do not have a published formal dress code. Novella nightlife encourages guests to dress up, while galas and masquerades may request cocktail attire, 1920s fashion, masks or themed costumes. Comfortable footwear is sensible for standing events and stairs. Shoes must remain on wherever glass is served in the event spaces.

Can guests take photographs and video?

Casual phone photography is common at restaurant, rooftop and party events, but no universal professional-camera policy is published. Artists and independent promoters may restrict flash, video recording or interchangeable-lens cameras. Themed balls frequently provide official photographers and photo areas. Avoid blocking aisles, stages and service routes, and ask permission before photographing private-event guests.

What happens to rooftop events in bad weather?

The rooftop is weather-dependent. An organizer may move dining, music or reserved seating inside, restrict access or continue in another room, depending on capacity. Refund terms are set for each event rather than by one universal rain policy. If poor weather is expected, wear suitable clothing but do not bring large umbrellas that could obstruct crowded rooftop areas.

How early should visitors arrive?

For dinner music or reserved brunch, arrive about 15-30 minutes before the reservation. For a general-admission Loft concert, themed ball or holiday event, allow 30-45 minutes for parking, identification checks and finding the correct entrance or floor. Earlier arrival is useful when seating is first come, first served or when a pre-party is scheduled in the Library.

Does the Hofheimer have a professional concert sound system?

The venue has basic optional audio, projection and dimmable lighting, but it does not publish a permanent touring-grade PA specification or lighting rider. Musicians may be required to bring their own sound, stage, lighting and technical staff. That makes production capabilities event-specific: an amplified touring band may install substantially more equipment than an acoustic dinner performance.

Is there a lost-and-found service?

Yes. The venue maintains a formal lost-property reporting process for items left in the restaurant, event rooms or rooftop. Report missing belongings promptly and include the event date, room and a detailed description. Because several events can occur across different floors in one day, staff may need time to compare reports with items recovered during cleaning.
