Events and Programming

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, usually called MCASD, is primarily an art museum rather than a conventional concert hall, but its expanded La Jolla campus has become an active setting for performances, screenings, talks, workshops, parties and interdisciplinary events. Programming is usually connected to exhibitions or the museum’s collection, so a visit may combine visual art with music, dance, film, poetry, food, fashion or live conversation.

Recurring programming includes Free Third Thursday, which provides free admission and often adds tours, music, artist conversations or special activations; Free Second Sunday, which is especially useful for families; Play Day family programming; public tours; artist and curator talks; and workshop series such as Reflections for adults age 55 and older. The museum also presents seasonal film programs, community partnerships and special events tied to exhibitions.

The recent program record shows a deliberately broad booking style. In 2022, the La Jolla reopening was accompanied by exhibitions including Niki de Saint Phalle in the 1960s, along with educational programs and a return of the museum’s Field Trip series. In 2023, MCASD presented Space Time performances featuring Jacolby Satterwhite and Super Squirrel, the Standard Fantastic Pictures summer film series, Joy Guidry’s loud and multimedia performance AMEN, a poetry and book-release event with Lora Mathis and Matty Terrones, and a film screening with local filmmaker Sergio Hernandez.

Programming expanded further in 2024 and 2025. Highlights included the PST ART weekend, experimental sound performances based on Pauline Oliveros’s Sonic Meditations, a Space Time screening and participatory holiday performance, an Axline Lecture with Daniel Lind-Ramos, Robert Irwin-focused tours and music, the Night at the Museum intimate live-music event, EXPO After Dark with DJs and electronic acts, a film screening accompanied by live story and song, the San Diego Asian Film Festival launch party, a wellness day with more than 20 classes and workshops, and screenings connected to the Alex Katz exhibition on theater and dance.

MCASD’s large signature events include the annual or recurring Avant Garde Ball, which combines art, fashion, live music, performance art, dancing, food and open bars. The 2025 edition included The Rosin Box Project, local DJs and a live mural, while the 2026 edition used the “Larger Than Life” theme and featured San Diego musicians, a queer-led synth-pop lineup, DJs, interactive dance and Barrio Logan food vendors. EXPO Design Market has also developed into a recurring two-day platform for regional publishing, design, music and community, with talks, vendors, DJ sets and an after-hours component.

As of August 31, 2026, the announced program includes Prospect 2026 and The Dean Collection Presents: Hometown Heroes, both running through November 8; a September 18 preview party and September 19 public opening for Visiones Nocturnas: Queer Nightlife in Contemporary Art; and the exhibition itself through January 10, 2027. The fall calendar also includes Reflections workshops, Free Third Thursday, family programming and public tours. Visiones Nocturnas is particularly relevant to the venue’s performance identity because it addresses queer nightlife and includes painting, performance, photography, sculpture, textiles, collage and video.

Typical public-event prices have ranged from free or donation-based admission to approximately $15-$40 for talks, screenings, workshops and smaller performances. Music and after-dark events have commonly fallen around $27-$65, while preview parties and major fundraising events can cost $125 or more. The museum’s 2023 After Party listed member tickets at $150 and non-member tickets at $225, while the accompanying gala began at $1,500 per dinner ticket. Prices vary considerably by event, membership level and whether food, drinks or fundraising benefits are included.

Tickets and Booking

Gallery admission is sold at the front desk, while special-event reservations are handled through the museum’s event calendar and box-office system. There is no single standard ticket model: exhibitions may use timed or general admission, public talks may be free with registration, and evening programs may have member and non-member prices. Some events use first-come, first-served seating, while others are standing-room or organized around movement through several galleries.

For popular programs, reserve as soon as tickets are released. The 2026 Giants preview party was announced as sold out before the event and stated that tickets would not be sold at the door. Membership can be valuable for frequent visitors because members receive free gallery admission, discounts on many programs and complimentary or reduced-price access to selected previews and fundraising events. Ticket sales are generally final, although the museum states that tickets may be rescheduled for another date in an emergency.

About Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

MCASD’s La Jolla campus is an oceanfront contemporary art museum at 700 Prospect Street. It is the museum’s principal public destination and houses collection galleries, temporary exhibitions, public-program spaces, an art park, terraces, a museum shop, an ocean-view restaurant and education facilities. The collection contains more than 5,600 works dating from 1950 to the present, with important strengths in Minimalism, Pop, conceptual art, California’s Light and Space movement, Latin American art and artists from the San Diego-Tijuana region.

The museum began in 1941 in the former La Jolla home of philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, a 1916 modernist residence designed by Irving Gill. It later operated under names including The Art Center in La Jolla and the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art before becoming MCASD. Architect Robert Mosher’s firm completed additions in 1950, 1960 and the late 1970s. Venturi Scott Brown & Associates carried out a major renovation in 1996, establishing a more overtly Postmodern layer in the building’s architectural history.

MCASD developed downtown sites over several decades, including a 1993 space designed with the involvement of artist Robert Irwin, artist Richard Fleischner and architect David Raphael Singer, followed by the larger Santa Fe Depot baggage-building location that opened in 2007. In November 2024, the San Diego City Council approved transferring the 1100 Kettner Boulevard property to the University of California, San Diego, as part of a proposed downtown cultural-center collaboration. The La Jolla campus is therefore the location visitors should use for current MCASD events.

Seating and Layout

MCASD does not operate as a fixed-seat theater. Jacobs Hall is a flexible multipurpose room used for lectures, screenings, performances, dinners and receptions. Seating may be arranged in rows, at tables, around an open performance area or removed altogether for dancing and standing events. Event pages normally state whether seating is first come, first served, reserved, accessible or standing-room, so the individual listing matters more than a permanent seating chart.

The former Sherwood Auditorium was repurposed during the expansion as a roughly 7,000-square-foot gallery with 20-foot ceilings, while part of the auditorium structure became a flexible event space with a dedicated Coast Boulevard entrance. Jacobs Hall has 23-foot wooden ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows facing the coastline. For talks and screenings, the best location is usually near the center of the arranged seating area; for parties and performances, sightlines vary as guests move between galleries, terraces and halls.

Private-event capacities provide the clearest published guide to the campus’s scale. Jacobs Hall accommodates 150 seated for dinner or 325 standing. The Davis Family Oceanview Terrace lists 152 seated or 251 standing; Axline Court lists 258 seated or 430 standing; Holly McGrath Terrace and the Conrad Prebys Learning Center each list 80 seated or 133 standing; the Sahm Seaview Room and Garfield Terrace list 57 seated or 94 standing; and the Art Park lists 206 seated or 341 standing. These are event-rental capacities, not guaranteed capacities for public performances.

Getting There and Parking

The main address is 700 Prospect Street in La Jolla. Free two-hour street parking is available in front of the museum and on nearby cross streets, including areas around Silverado Street and Draper Avenue. The museum warns that street parking can be competitive, particularly on weekends and during major events. Valet parking is listed at $10 for members and $15 for non-members, with the garage and valet approach on Cuvier Street just before Coast Boulevard.

The garage entrance is around the corner from the main museum entrance on Cuvier Street. Visitors normally leave the garage, walk up Cuvier Street toward Prospect Street and enter through the front doors. Visitors needing an accessible route can request an alternate path through the lobby. For Coast-side programs in Jacobs Hall, event instructions have directed rideshares and map searches to the ocean-facing entrance at 600 Coast Boulevard South rather than the Prospect Street entrance. Follow the event-specific arrival instructions because entry points can change with the program.

Public transportation is possible but usually requires a final walk through La Jolla. MTS Route 30 connects Old Town Transit Center with La Jolla, Pacific Beach, UC San Diego and UTC, stopping at Silverado Street and Herschel Avenue, approximately a six-minute walk from the museum. Old Town provides connections to the Green Line trolley, Amtrak and other regional services. The UC San Diego Blue Line reaches UTC and La Jolla Village, where visitors can transfer to local buses or a rideshare for the remaining distance. Route schedules and stops change, so check the day’s service before leaving.

Inside the Venue

Visitors enter through a bright lobby connected to the galleries and museum shop. The building’s experience is spacious and coastal rather than theatrical: tall galleries, natural light, open circulation, terraces and framed views toward the Pacific frequently shape the visit. The Kitchen at MCASD provides ocean-view dining, while the Shop sells art books, exhibition merchandise and design-oriented gifts. Public Wi-Fi, free lockers, benches, portable stools and a Calm Room are available.

Food and drinks are not permitted in the galleries. Water bottles may remain inside a visitor’s bag, and other food or drinks must be finished, discarded or stored before entering the exhibition areas. The museum has no coat or bag check, but it offers a limited number of free self-service lockers. Bags larger than 16 by 16 inches, with a strap longer than nine inches, must be stored. Photography and video are generally allowed without flash, but selfie sticks, tripods, light panels, professional equipment and photography of staff or security features are not allowed.

For events, expect a museum-style entry rather than arena security. Doors, gallery access, food service, phone restrictions and age limits vary by program. Some performances have included warnings for loud sound, strobe lighting, flashing lights, brief nudity or strong language. The museum has also prohibited cell-phone use during certain performances, so read the individual event instructions before arriving.

Nearby Amenities

MCASD sits in central La Jolla within walking distance of village restaurants, cafés, hotels, coastal viewpoints and La Jolla Cove. The Kitchen is the simplest pre-visit option because it is on site and overlooks the Pacific. For a longer evening, allow time for dinner in the village before a program, or plan a post-event walk along Prospect Street and Coast Boulevard. Weekend parking is more difficult than weekday parking, so arriving 30-45 minutes early is sensible for ticketed events and public openings.

Late-night transportation is more limited than in downtown San Diego. After evening events, rideshare or a prearranged pickup is usually more practical than relying on a late bus connection. If staying in La Jolla, many village hotels are close enough for walking; visitors staying downtown should allow additional travel time for the return journey.

What Makes This Venue Special

MCASD’s defining feature is the collision of serious contemporary art with the physical character of the coast. The complex preserves an Irving Gill residence, incorporates later Mosher & Drew and Venturi Scott Brown work, and adds Selldorf Architects’ concrete, travertine, aluminum and glass volumes. New terraces and an art park turn what was once a parking and service zone into public-facing outdoor space, while the building’s windows and elevated site keep the ocean present throughout the visit.

The four-year, $105 million expansion reopened on April 9, 2022. It renovated 28,000 square feet and added 46,400 square feet, bringing the museum to approximately 104,400 square feet and increasing gallery space to about 40,000 square feet. The project also added below-grade parking, a new loading dock, art storage, a freight elevator, education space and flexible areas for public programs. The result is not a conventional performance venue, but a museum capable of turning galleries, courtyards, terraces and ocean-view halls into different kinds of stages.

MCASD also matters because of its binational and community orientation. Its mission explicitly embraces the San Diego-Tijuana region, and its exhibitions regularly connect local artists and regional issues with international contemporary art. In fiscal 2023, the museum worked with seven schools, reached nearly 500 students through its Extended School Partnership program, held 13 workshops attended by more than 1,500 visitors and added 69 works to its collection. A 2026 exhibition from the Dean Collection attracted approximately 25,000 visitors, demonstrating the institution’s ability to bring new audiences into a contemporary-art setting.

Visitor Tips and Information

All public areas, galleries, The Kitchen, The Shop, the Edwards Garden Gallery and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Elevators serve the building, accessible parking and curb drop-off are available near Prospect Street, and the Prospect and Coast Boulevard entrances have ramps and power-assist doors. Wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The museum provides SoundMate personal assistive-listening devices for programs in Jacobs Hall or the Coast Room when integrated amplification is being used; visitors need their own standard 3.5mm headphones.

Wall texts and object labels are available in English and Spanish, and the museum’s digital guide supports additional language access. Trained service dogs are allowed in public areas; pets, comfort animals and emotional-support animals are not permitted. Children must remain with their adults, and running or jumping is not allowed. Pencil-only sketching is permitted with a sketchbook no larger than 8½ by 11 inches. Gallery admission is free for members, visitors age 25 and under, military personnel, SNAP/EBT cardholders, visitors with disabilities and one personal care attendant per visitor.

Recent visitors commonly praise the building, ocean views, airy galleries, sculpture garden and range of media. Some reviews also note confusing floor numbering, long routes to restrooms and occasional disappointment when galleries close for installation or private events. Those comments point to the most useful practical tip: confirm what is open on the day of your visit, especially around exhibition changeovers, and allow 45-90 minutes for the galleries or longer if you are adding the sculpture garden and a meal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego located?

MCASD’s main visitor destination is at 700 Prospect Street in La Jolla, California, above Coast Boulevard and near La Jolla Cove. The museum’s public entrances are on Prospect Street and, for selected programs, on the ocean-facing Coast Boulevard side. Event listings may use a different entrance from standard gallery visits, so check the arrival instructions attached to the specific program.

Is MCASD a concert venue?

Not in the traditional sense. MCASD is an art museum with flexible spaces rather than a permanent concert hall or fixed-seat theater. It hosts screenings, live music, dance, poetry, sound art, lectures, parties and performance art in Jacobs Hall, Axline Court, galleries, terraces and other areas. Seating, sound levels and room layouts depend on the individual event.

How much does admission to MCASD cost?

Current general gallery admission is $25. San Diego County and Tijuana residents pay $20, while students, educators and adults age 55 and older pay $15. Members, visitors age 25 and under, military personnel, SNAP/EBT cardholders and visitors with disabilities receive free admission under the museum’s listed programs. Special exhibitions and events may have separate prices.

When is MCASD free?

Free admission is offered every Second Sunday and Third Thursday, with no reservation required for Third Thursday admission according to the current event information. Visitors age 25 and under are free whenever the museum is open. The museum also lists free admission programs for military visitors, SNAP/EBT cardholders, visitors with disabilities and one personal care attendant per eligible visitor.

What days is MCASD closed?

The La Jolla galleries are normally closed Monday through Wednesday. Regular gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum also closes on several federal and major holidays. The Kitchen or a private event may have different hours, so do not assume every campus service follows gallery hours.

Does MCASD have assigned seating?

Most public programs do not use permanent assigned seating. Jacobs Hall and other spaces can be arranged for rows, tables, open performance areas or standing receptions. Some screenings state that seating is first come, first served, while parties and gallery activations are mainly standing. Arrive early if a program emphasizes limited seating, accessibility seating or first-come entry.

What is the best place to sit for a talk or screening?

For a lecture or screening, the center of the temporary seating arrangement usually provides the most balanced view and sound. For performances spread through a gallery or hall, the best sightline can change during the program. Review the event description for seating notes, especially if it mentions audience participation, low lighting, standing-room conditions or movement between spaces.

Does MCASD have a parking garage?

Yes. The garage entrance is on Cuvier Street near Coast Boulevard, around the corner from the Prospect Street entrance. The museum also lists free two-hour street parking in front of the building and on nearby cross streets. Valet parking is listed at $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Street spaces can be difficult to find during weekend events.

How close is public transportation to MCASD?

The closest practical bus connection is MTS Route 30, which serves La Jolla and stops at Silverado Street and Herschel Avenue, about a six-minute walk from the museum. The route connects with Old Town Transit Center, Pacific Beach, UC San Diego and UTC. The Blue Line trolley reaches UTC and La Jolla Village, but a transfer or rideshare is usually needed for the final trip.

Where should rideshares drop off?

Use 700 Prospect Street for ordinary gallery visits and programs using the main entrance. Some Jacobs Hall and Coast-side events have directed guests to the ocean-facing entrance at 600 Coast Boulevard South. Because event layouts can change, use the address printed in the individual event instructions rather than automatically directing a driver to the main museum address.

Can I bring a backpack into MCASD?

Visitors may wear bags and backpacks on their front while inside, but larger bags must be placed in the museum’s free self-service lockers. Bags larger than 16 by 16 inches, with a strap longer than nine inches, are required to be stored. MCASD does not provide a staffed coat or bag check and is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

Can I take photos inside MCASD?

Photography and video are generally allowed without flash unless an exhibition or event says otherwise. Selfie sticks, tripods, light panels and professional equipment are not permitted. Visitors may not photograph staff or security features, and disruptive phone conversations are discouraged. Some performances impose stricter rules, including no phone use, so event-specific instructions override general gallery photography guidance.

Are food and drinks allowed in the galleries?

No. Food and beverages must be finished, discarded or stored before entering the galleries. A water bottle may remain inside your own bag. The museum has an on-site ocean-view restaurant, and some events offer food, drinks or a cash bar in designated areas. Food service at private events or evening programs depends on the event organizer and venue arrangement.

Does MCASD offer a quiet or sensory-friendly space?

Yes. The museum provides a Calm Room, described as a quiet, inclusive area for visitors who need a break from sensory stimulation. Accessibility information also lists quiet visitation hours on weekday mornings, although the regular La Jolla gallery schedule currently begins Thursday. Visitors attending loud or visually intense programs should review warnings and ask staff about quieter routes or spaces.

Are wheelchairs available?

Wheelchairs are available at the front desk on a first-come, first-served basis and are sanitized after each use. Elevators serve the museum, and public areas including galleries, restrooms, The Kitchen and The Shop are wheelchair accessible. Accessible parking and curb drop-off are available near Prospect Street, while staff can guide visitors from the garage through an alternate accessible route.

Are service animals allowed at MCASD?

Trained service dogs are allowed in all public areas under the museum’s ADA policy. Pets, comfort animals and emotional-support animals are not permitted. A service dog may be removed if it is out of control or not housebroken. Visitors who need other accommodations, including assistive listening support, should arrange them before attending a program whenever possible.

How long should I spend at MCASD?

Many visitors can see the principal galleries in roughly 45-90 minutes, but the campus rewards a longer visit. Add time for the Edwards Sculpture Garden, art park, ocean-view terraces, museum shop and The Kitchen. A public opening, workshop or special exhibition may require more time, while private events can restrict access to parts of the building.

Is MCASD good for children?

Children are welcome, but adults must stay with them and the museum prohibits running and jumping. The strongest family-focused option is Free Second Sunday, which includes Play Day programming and multigenerational activities. The sculpture garden and outdoor areas can also help younger visitors. Children age 25 and under qualify for free general admission under the museum’s current admission policy.
