About Back Porch

The Back Porch (also known as Back Porch & B&B Lounge) is a long-standing dive bar and live-music venue in downtown Spearfish, SD . Housed in a historic Main Street building (formerly an IH implement dealership from the mid-1960s), it’s known for its biker-friendly dive-bar vibe, pool tables and even video lottery machines . The venue features a large indoor performance stage and is often packed to capacity – around 1,000 standing room patrons . For over 30 years it has been run by owner Leland Ruzicka, earning a legendary reputation in the Black Hills music scene . In fact, longtime patrons and local music historians note that nearly every country, rock or bluegrass fan in the region has a “Back Porch story” from its classic era . The club’s storied past includes booking regional favorites and even national touring acts (Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids, Commander Cody, etc.) on its stage in earlier decades . Today it remains notable as one of Spearfish’s main live-music hangouts and a rock-history landmark in the community .

Events and Programming

The Back Porch hosts a wide variety of entertainment. Live music is the main attraction – from local/regional touring bands to specialty tribute and genre acts. Promoters list belongings from classic rock and country to reggae, jam-band and electronic rock on its bill . Concert archives show hundreds of past shows dominated by Americana, bluegrass, alt-country and folk musicians . In recent years the calendar has also included themed entertainment beyond music – for example a burlesque revue was held in April 2025 www.ticketfairy.com, and the venue even hosts holiday parties and bingo or trivia nights (as part of downtown events). The Back Porch is especially active during Spearfish’s annual events; for instance during the 2023 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally the house band “Thunder Road” played nightly shows at 9 PM Monday through Friday . Open-mic and karaoke nights have also been advertised periodically (often on slower weeknights) to showcase local talent. Overall, you can expect mostly live band concerts (rock, country, bluegrass, etc.), dance/DJ events and occasional variety acts appearing several times per week, typically with genre-appropriate cover charges.

Tickets and Booking

Ticketing for Back Porch events is generally handled at the venue itself rather than by national ticket platforms. Small local acts may simply be $5–$10 cover at the door, while bigger touring bands and themed shows might charge $15–$30. There is no fixed seating, so pricing is one-tier general admission. Patrons can usually purchase tickets in advance through local promoters, or directly at the door on event nights. For more definite info on upcoming shows, you can call the venue’s box office at (605) 642-2134 (also the listed phone number) . Popular events often sell out, so it’s wise to buy early if possible. No major online vendor is officially used, so check local listings or social media for Back Porch presales and door times if you plan to attend a big show.

Seating and Layout

The Back Porch is primarily a standing-room club with an open floor in front of the stage. The stage runs along one wall of the bar room, facing the main floor, and there are few fixed seats. Most patrons stand or may pull up metal bar stools if available, so the best “seats” are front-row standing spots. (There is no elaborate VIP or balcony section.) The bar itself is along the opposite wall, and you can often sit at stools along the bar top overlooking the stage. Acoustically, live shows are loud and energetic – expect some speaker rumble near the stage. For a better view in a crowd, try a spot just off to one side of center or near the raised platform edge. If you prefer quieter listening, the pool/table area toward the back is more relaxed but farther from the speakers. In short, this is a casual general-admission layout: stand close for the full concert experience, or hang near the bar for a less intense vantage.

Getting There and Parking

The Back Porch is at 703 N. Main Street in downtown Spearfish , right on the corner of North Main (Highway 14) and West Illinois Street. This is the heart of historic Spearfish, just a short walk from other bars and shops. If driving, you can park along Main Street or side streets nearby; note that downtown Spearfish has a two-hour parking limit in the core area . There are also municipal parking lots and side-street parking around Brady Park just a block east of Main. No large private lot is directly attached to the venue. Beware of enforcement: cars must be moved or off-street after two hours to avoid tickets . Rideshare and taxis are limited in this small city, so it’s easiest to drive or walk. There is no local bus, though regional shuttle services (Prairie Hills Transit) serve the area with advance reservations. If you plan a night out, consider designating a driver or using hotel shuttle services for safe transportation back to lodging after closing time.

Inside the Venue

On entry, expect a low-key, biker-dive-bar vibe. There is no coat check — bring only what you need (large backpacks are discouraged). Security is generally light (just ID checks for age), though on busy nights there may be staff at the entrance. The bar serves a full range of drinks (beers, cocktails, shots); this is primarily a drinking crowd. There is little or no formal food menu – at best you might find bar snacks, so plan to eat before arriving. Restrooms are available in the venue (likely along the back wall) and are standard men’s and women’s facilities. You’ll hear plenty of live music and chatter over the bar — it can get very loud at peak times, so consider bringing earplugs if you’re sensitive. Cell phone signal can be spotty when the crowd is thick. During shows, management is relaxed but may request minimal photography (no big tripods, flash photography typically discouraged in concerts). The atmosphere is friendly and laid-back: bartenders and staff are often noted for good service , and quick drink service means you don’t often have to wait at the bar for long. In short, expect an energetic bar with a stage; grab a drink, find a spot near the front for best views, and enjoy the show.

Nearby Amenities

Downtown Spearfish has plenty of choices for pre-show dining and lodging. Main Street is lined with local eateries – you’ll find casual diners, Mexican restaurants, burger joints and cafes within a block or two. (Exact names can change over time; look for favorites like TD’s Bar & Grill or Guadalajara Mexican, which are nearby.) Two blocks east is Brady Park, and Crow Peak Brewing Co. just off Main offers food trucks and pub fare . If you have extra time, Spearfish Brewing Co. is walking distance and serves award-winning craft beers along with sandwiches . For late-night snacks, some locals even grab pizza or go to 24-hour spots after concerts. There are also several other bars steps away (like the Wharfman or a small arcade bar) if you want to bar-hop before or after the show. Hotels and motels are conveniently nearby: major chains like the Holiday Inn, Quality Inn, Super 8 and others have downtown locations or are just off the interstate exit a few blocks away. In either case, most visitors plan to arrive at their hotel or a designated driver before closing time, since downtown closing is often by 2 AM.

What Makes This Venue Special

Back Porch’s charm lies in its history and community reputation. It’s been a cornerstone of Spearfish nightlife for decades, earning a sort of cult status. In 2021, it was highlighted by the South Dakota Rock & Roll Music Association as a legendary local club, noting that “it would be virtually impossible to find a live music fan… who doesn’t have a Back Porch story” . The dive-bar decor (neon signs, license plates, motorcycles) and the old-school wooden stage give it unique character you won’t find at chain clubs. Many famous local bands cut their teeth here – hall-of-fame acts regularly played the Porch in their heyday – so it feels like a living museum of Black Hills music. Musicians and fans alike love it for its authenticity: even today, reviewers call it a “cool lil dive bar” with the owner and staff treating patrons like family . It gained national notice too, reportedly ranking as a top dive bar in the U.S. . In short, the Back Porch is special because it’s both an ordinary hometown bar and a storied performance hall rolled into one: every visit is charged with local lore, and it remains a must-stop place for anyone wanting the true Spearfish music scene.

Visitor Tips and Information

Age / ID: The Back Porch enforces a 21+ age policy for nearly all events . Always bring a valid photo ID (driver’s license or passport) – you won’t be admitted without it. During evening shows or tight-lined days, expect staff to check IDs at the door.
What to Bring: Besides ID, bring cash and cards (the bar accepts credit/debit at least for drinks) and maybe an extra layer if you tend to get cold on dance floors. Dress is casual – jeans, tees or leather (biker gear even) are normal. Comfortable shoes are wise since you’ll likely be standing. Earplugs can make loud shows more enjoyable if you plan to be near speakers. The venue’s lighting is dim, so keep valuables secure.
Accessibility: The entire club is on ground level (no steps between street and bar floor), which generally makes it wheelchair-accessible to enter. However, aircraft-style ADA modifications in an old building may be minimal. Communicate any special needs (e.g. wheelchair seating) in advance with management. Restrooms are on site but check if they are wheelchair-equipped.
Venue Policies: Outside food/drinks are prohibited. No smoking is allowed indoors (South Dakota law prohibits indoor smoking in bars). Bags may be subject to search on busy nights. Filming and photography on phones is usually fine (no flash during live music), but professional cameras or video recording typically require permission. Coat checks and lockers are not available, so plan to keep items with you.
Common Mistakes: Don’t assume there’s free parking all night – watch the 2-hour limit on street parking . Also, don’t forget to bring ID or you’ll be turned away. Arriving very late can mean paying a cover with no guarantee of good sightlines. Locals recommend arriving early for popular shows (lines form) and grabbing drinks ahead of time since the bar does get busy. Finally, if you’re driving, note the last call (2 AM) and allow time estimate travel back to your hotel safely.
Overall, a night at Back Porch is easy to enjoy if you come prepared: check the schedule for show times, bring ID, cash/credit for drinks, and plan your transport. Then settle in for a classic dive-bar concert experience rich with local flavor!

Most parking in central Spearfish is free of charge, aside from obeying the time limits .

How early do events usually start and when do doors open?

Show start times vary by event, but most concerts begin in the evening around 8 or 9 PM. Doors often open about an hour before the advertised show time (so roughly 7–8 PM for an 8–9 PM start). What is the capacity of the Back Porch?

The Back Porch has a maximum capacity of about 1,000 people . This counts standing room only; the venue is set up for general admission, so up to roughly a thousand concertgoers can fit on the main floor. At capacity shows it will be quite packed, so arrive early for space at the front.

Bringing a few essentials will help: always carry a 21+ photo ID for entry verification, and some cash or card for drinks (and potentially cover fees). Earplugs are recommended if you plan to stand near the stage. Since there is no coat check, bring only a small bag or jacket you'll carry with you. Comfortable attire and shoes are best, as most of the event is standing. Otherwise, just bring enthusiasm for the music!

Is photography allowed during events?

Phone photography (snapshots and social media pics) is generally allowed at Back Porch concerts, but professional cameras or video recording typically require permission. As always, be courteous: avoid aiming bright flashes at performers or blocking other patrons.

Are there any food options inside Back Porch?

Food options inside the Back Porch itself are very limited. It’s primarily a bar, so there isn’t a full kitchen. Occasionally bar snacks might be served, but for any substantial meal you should dine elsewhere beforehand. Many visitors make a meal of it at a nearby restaurant or brewery (for example, the Crow Peak and Spearfish Brewing brewpubs are blocks away) before heading to the show.

Are smoking or vaping allowed inside the venue?

No. By South Dakota state law, smoking (including e-cigarettes or vaping) is not permitted inside any bar. Smoke breaks must be taken outside. The venue enforces the no-smoking rule in its indoor space, so plan to step outside if you need to smoke or vape.

Does the venue have a coat check or lockers?

No, the Back Porch does not offer a coat check or locker service. You will need to keep your belongings with you. Since it’s a casual bar environment, guests typically carry minimal items (small bags or jackets). If it’s cold outside, leave bulky coats in your car or hotel until after the show.

What are the venue’s hours of operation?

The Back Porch is open every night from morning until late. General bar hours are roughly 10:00 AM–2:00 AM Monday through Saturday, and 11:00 AM–2:00 AM on Sunday . However, live music shows usually start in the evening. Always check the schedule for specific event times on any given night.
