Edged out from October 20 onwards, ‘The Land of Glowing Skies,’ or Rakiura in Maori, welcomes the multi-day celebration of food, music, and art. The occasion provides a podium for Aotearoa’s top musicians, chefs, artists, and entertainers while shedding light on the island’s people, culture, and artistic endeavors. Digsss, Sam Cullen, and liquid DnB artist Gypsea return from the first edition. Singer-songwriter Julia Deans hits the stage at the Stewart Island Community Centre in Oban on October 20 with support from alternative pop-rock singer Sam Cullen. October 21 shapes up nicely as Sweet Mix Kids perform music from their latest works at the community hub, joined by BROTHERHOODJZ and bilingual rapper and producer Rei. Venezuelan pianist/DJ Arii Jade and Auckland-based DJ Seon also feature on the card. October 22 sees The Gravity Ball hosted by Rei unwrapping five hours of nonstop music helmed by P.Digsss, electronic alt-pop songstress Vikae, DJ Gypsea, local hotshot Storm Lequesne, and Seon. Bush Doof from a yet-to-be-disclosed location springs to life on October 23, with Buffalo Rider and Sammy G joining the already stacked line-up. Along with day-wise entry passes, attendees can also purchase a Dancing Queen super pass, which gets you entry to all music-related events. Regarding the non-musical rendezvous, the promoters have threaded together a string of activities at Rakiura Rhyme Machine 2023. Daily yoga sessions, a joust of the best bakers on the island, sandcastle-building contests, island walking tours, etc., are also on offer. Arrowtown’s La Rumbla and Gravity underline their culinary prowess by hosting a restaurant pop-up at Gravity Fishing Charters. A wine and cheese tasting is slated for October 23, helmed by the co-founder of La Rumbla PJ. All taking place in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. I love playing down south and being close to home so I can’t wait to see some familiar faces and friends.
