***We had a chat with the influential DJ and producer about the inception of his new label, his single, his artistic journey, and lots more.***

Effortlessly balancing the responsibilities of DJ, producer, band member, and label owner, Chook has established himself as a formidable force within the drum & bass scene. His unparalleled work ethic, extensive industry knowledge, and unwavering drive and passion for drum & bass music have elevated him to the pinnacle in every domain he enters.

Being an incredibly important cog in pushing drum & bass sound across Europe for over a decade, Chook has built himself a formidable catalog through his Full Force Recordings, which he started in 2004. The label has been responsible for cultivating a vibrant community of innovative artists and dedicated fans, attracting the support of notable figures such as Roni Size, J Majik, Calyx, and Teebee, who have all endorsed the imprint.

With Full Force Recordings taking a well-deserved break, Chook is making an explosive comeback by launching a brand-new label, Sound Of Time. This new venture marks a significant milestone in Chook’s musical journey, presenting an innovative and forward-looking interpretation of his distinctive sound. Sound Of Time will delve into the profound, atmospheric beats that characterize Chook’s artistry while introducing an innovative twist—integrating a progressive, electronic flair that challenges the limits of the genre.

Marking the label’s debut single will be a rework of one of Full Force Recordings’ iconic tunes, ‘You Are All You Have,’ featuring Luxembourg’s singer-songwriter Claudine Muno. With this remix, Chook returns to showcase his forward-thinking approach to production; one that expertly fuses Claudine Muno’s heartfelt vocals with energetic basslines and progressive house rhythms, bringing a fresh dancefloor dimension to the original.

The track is part of a larger creative collaboration with Muno, with whom Chook previously worked on a genre-blending project with his band, Monophona. Their unique chemistry is evident as the remix builds on Muno’s acoustic and folk roots while incorporating Chook’s sophisticated soundscapes.

After launching his new label and releasing his latest single, we sat down with Chook to discuss how it all came together, his journey with Full Force Recordings, and what the future holds for Sound of Time.

**TFword: Hey, thanks for taking the time out to chat with us. How** **’** **s 2024 been for you so far?** **Chook:**2024 has been a really interesting year for me. I’ve been fortunate to discover a bunch of new artists who reignited my passion for Drum & Bass. Their fresh sounds and innovative approaches have inspired me to dive back into the studio and start producing DnB again. It’s been a creative and exciting time, and I’m eager to share what I’ve been working on.

**TFword: We could write a story about how much we’ve enjoyed listening to ‘Echoes of Existence.’ Talk to us about your experience writing the tune.
Chook:**When I wrote “Echoes of Existence,” I was really inspired by an old Corrupt Souls track called “Machines.” There’s something about that old-school Neuro sound that just hits different, and I had a blast bringing that vibe into the present with all the modern tools we have at our disposal now.

**TFword: Also, what was the inspiration behind naming it** **‘** **Echoes of Existence** **’** **?** **Chook:**The name “Echoes of Existence” actually came from a sample I used from the movie Léon. There’s a line where Gary Oldman says, “It’s when you start to become really afraid of death that you learn to appreciate life.” That line really stuck with me, and it felt like the perfect inspiration for the track’s title. It’s about those moments when you start to see life differently, which felt right for the vibe I was going for.

**TFword: Your Full Force Recordings had such a massive impact on the drum & bass sound. How do you look back at your Full Force journey?** **Chook:**When Radic and I launched Full Force Recordings, it was a completely different time. The internet was just getting started—Myspace and AOL AIM were pretty much the only social media around. Back then, it felt like it was really all about the music. Nowadays, it seems like everyone’s focused on hacking algorithms to get more plays, but we didn’t care about plays or sales. We were just passionate about releasing music we really dug. Looking back, I’m pretty honored that people still appreciate the work we did with Full Force, even 20 years later.

**TFword: You** **’** **re now about to start a new label with a remix from yourself. What was a pivotal moment in the inception of Sound Of Time?** **Chook:**When I started making DnB again, I realized that my sound is pretty different from the modern Neuro that’s out there right now. I felt like I needed an imprint where I could release my music the way I want, without having to adapt to trends that don’t really resonate with me. That’s what led to the creation of Sound of Time—just a space where I can do my thing, my way.

**TFword: Bringing back one of Full Force’s favorites to remix as the label’s debut release. How did it come about?**
**Chook:**You Are All You Have” was by far the track that got the most plays for me. By chance, I stumbled upon the old Logic project file, and it just made sense to remix it. Working on that remix was actually the pivotal moment. Once it was done, I realized there wasn’t really a label out there where it would fit. That’s when I knew it was the right time to start a new imprint—a more mature continuation of what we did with Full Force.

**TFword: We love how the remix explores the classic Chook sound while maintaining the original’s tense atmosphere. How easy or difficult was it to rework your own tune after so long while bringing** **modern DnB aesthetics into it?** **Chook:**Making “Echoes of Existence” took me ages because I had to get reacquainted with how to make more modern-sounding DnB. Producing DnB is quite different from making techno—sound design plays a much bigger role, I find. With “You Are All You Have,” it went a bit quicker, but it was still a pretty analytical process. I’ve just finished a new track, though, and that one came together much faster. I think I’m back in the groove now.

**TFword: What are the sounds we can expect to see from Sound Of Time?
Chook:**What I can tell you is that the sound of Sound of Time will be whatever I’m digging while in the studio. I’m not going to make any compromises just to fit a trend or please an algorithm. If I feel a track needs to be 7 minutes long, then it will be. It’s all about staying true to what I’m feeling in the moment.

**TFword: There** **’** **s another side to Chook that releases progressive house and melodic techno. How do you keep yourself motivated while exploring such a wide range of genres and sounds?** **Chook:**I’ve always produced the music I felt at the moment, even if it wasn’t the best move for my career. I never wanted to make compromises. Around 2010 or 2011, I got fed up with DnB and started my band Monophona, which was a very acoustic project. I loved that new challenge and sound until 2019. After I left the band, I got into producing techno, which was another exciting challenge. I think I just enjoy pushing myself to try something new. It’s the same with DnB now—I’m learning new tools and ways to work, and that’s what drives me to keep going.

**How** **’** **s it looking like for Chook and Sound Of Time with respect to future releases?** **Chook:**First, I’m going to see how this first release goes. Once I’ve got a sense of how it’s received, I’ll figure out the next move. I’ve got another track in the pipeline, but I want to see how this one does before making any decisions on what comes next.
