# Turn on the ID check for buyers

Club nights, festivals and high-demand shows use an ID check so every buyer proves who they are before the night rather than at the door. Each buyer's card is held until they pass, so you only sell to people who have shown who they are.

Takes:  5 minutes

- [Open Fai](#step-1)
- [Ask Fai to turn on the ID check](#step-2)
- [Approve the change](#step-3)
- [A buyer's ID check](#step-4)
- [Check the Needs Verification tab](#step-5)

## Before you start

- You need an owner or admin role on the event.
- You use Fai, the assistant inside your dashboard. The event settings have no switch for the ID check, so Fai turns it on for you.

1. ## Open Fai

   Select **Ask Fai** in your dashboard.
2. ## Ask Fai to turn on the ID check

   Enter the event's name and ask Fai to turn on the ID check for buyers, such as "turn on the ID check for buyers on Summer Sessions".

   **Note:** The ID check covers every ticket type on the event. Buyers who already passed an ID check on Ticket Fairy skip it.
3. ## Approve the change

   Check the event name and the change on Fai's card, then approve it. She saves it and tells you it is done.

## A buyer's ID check

When a buyer pays, we hold the amount on their card instead of charging it, and send them straight to the ID check, where they photograph a photo ID and themselves. If they pass, we take the payment and issue their tickets. If they stop part-way, we email them a reminder after 12 hours and every 12 hours after that.

**Note:** On card checkout, an order nobody finishes stays held until the card hold lapses, at least seven days after the order, and Ticket Fairy then cancels it.

4. ## Check the Needs Verification tab

   After your next sale, open your event, select **Orders** and look for the **Needs Verification** tab. It lists the buyers whose card is held until they pass the check.

## Or have it done for you

Fai, the assistant inside your dashboard, turns the ID check on or off for one event. She shows you the change and asks you to approve it before she saves it. The command line and MCP have no setting for the ID check.

### In your dashboard, with Fai

```
Turn on the ID check for buyers on <EVENT NAME> and show me the change before you save it
```

## Turn off the ID check

1. ### Ask Fai to turn it off

   Ask Fai to turn off the ID check for buyers on the event, then approve the change.

   **Note:** Clear the orders waiting on a check before you turn it off, because the **Needs Verification** tab is hidden once the check is off.

Fai turns the ID check off for one event after you approve the change.

### In your dashboard, with Fai

```
Turn off the ID check for buyers on <EVENT NAME>
```

## Questions you might have

**Is this the same as ID required on the event?**

 No. **ID required** tells buyers to bring ID to the door, and they pay as usual. The ID check makes each buyer prove who they are online before we take their payment.

**Has the buyer been charged while they wait?**

 No. Their card carries a hold for the amount. We take the payment when they pass, and releasing the hold costs them nothing.

**What do I do with orders that never pass?**

 Send the check again, take the payment without it, or release the hold from the **Needs Verification** tab. [Clear the ticket orders waiting on an ID check](https://www.ticketfairy.com/guides/verify-buyer-identity-at-checkout) covers each one.

**Does a buyer have to pass the check again for my next event?**

 No. A buyer who passed once on Ticket Fairy skips the check on later orders.
