[Sagar Deshmukh](https://www.ticketfairy.com/no/word/author/sagar0204.md) 8 august 2024 · 4 min lesing ***Following his Purified Records debut, we had a chat with the Amsterdam-based DJ and producer about his latest EP, his journey so far, and lots more.*** A sound that is characterized by melancholic melodies, immersive breaks, and swirling soundscapes, Dutch DJ and producer Wouter Achterberg’s craft is dedicated to capturing the emotional essence of dance music. Having made a solid impact over the past few years with releases on Miss Monique’s Siona Records and Purified Records, Wouter has had his music road tested by industry heavyweights like Colyn, Innellea, Maceo Plex, and Nora En Pure, among others. Now for his return to Purified Records following his debut on the label early this year, Wouter Achterberg has released two dynamic offerings that encapsulate the producer’s vision of creating an evolving auditory journey with the ‘Mutations’ EP. Tried and tested around the world, including Nora En Pure’s Main Stage ULTRA Music Festival set, both the tunes conjure an otherworldly atmosphere with chopped vocals and mystical instrumentation, with Wouter gradually building the arrangement with rolling bass and heavy synth work to deliver a riveting experience. Following his return to the label, we were keen to know more about the EP, how the Wouter Achterberg journey began, and what he has planned for us in the future. So, it was time for a chat. **TFword: The sun’s out, and the summer has properly kicked in. For how long were you anticipating it?** **Wouter Achterberg:** Summer is the busiest, but the most fun time of the year. Producing tracks in winter and testing them for a big crowd in summer is what every artist has in mind when they’re in the studio. The response to my new EP is everything I could’ve hoped for and more! **TF: We’re thoroughly enjoying your Mutations EP on Purified Records. What are your thoughts on how the tunes have shaped up?** **Wouter Achterberg:** Mutations was made with the idea to shape a tune which sounded a little different. The track quickly came together after being inspired by the underground sound Berlin clubs have to offer, Sisyphos specifically. After working on it for quite a bit, it shaped up to be a great A-side record. Loved how the track came down! How were the tunes approached by you creatively?** **Wouter Achterberg:** Mutations was created with the idea to create a more stable energy track, hearing it for the first time on a big PA made me realize that it has quite a punch to it. The record The Unknown was made with the idea to work with a vocalist, the record came together very quickly after hearing a friend’s voice for the first time. I think the low notes he can hit pair really well with my euphoric melodies! **TF: The EP also marks your return to Purified Records. How has the experience been working with Nora En Pure and the label?** **Wouter Achterberg:** Releasing music on Purified Records is a dream come true. Seeing Nora En Pure play my record Mutations on big stages far exceeded my expectations! **TF: The EP has received some serious road testing as well. Take us through some of the reactions you received when you dropped the tune in your DJ sets.** **Wouter Achterberg:** Seeing Nora En Pure play record Mutations dropped on the Miami Ultra stage gave me the shivers. I love it when my records make it to such big stages. And when people ask for the release prior to its release date, it feels like a big honour! **TF: How do you think your sound has evolved over the years?** **Wouter Achterberg:** I think my sound is evolving more towards the darker or more underground sound of melodic techno. I love the feeling the heavy basslines and bombastic melodies give when being on the dancefloor. But the journey has just began, let’s see where it takes me. **TF: How would you like to describe your artistic journey so far?** **Wouter Achterberg:** I think the last few years I was still searching to find my own sound. It’s quite the exercise to find a sound that fits my personal style, but I’m happy with where I am right now. **TF: Who would you regard as your dream B2B?** **Wouter Achterberg:** If I have to pick one artist it would be Colyn, I think he has a really unique style with both darker and more upbeat records. Oh, and did I mention already that he played Mutations as well? **TF: How is the rest of the year looking like Wouter Achterberg with his music?** **Wouter Achterberg:** I’m always working on new music.
