It may seem far-fetched, perhaps a touch bizarre, but not to multi-genre DJ **Rayska**. A staple in Mumbai’s underground dance music scene, Rayska aka Renée Talati is notoriously known to commingle heavy bass, jersey club, drum & bass, dubstep, club edits and mashups in her sets. This knack of hers was brandished lavishly at electronic collective **Welupt**‘s Pre-Women’s Day Party last month, which saw an all-girls line-up of bass music and hip-hop prodigies. “That was one of the most high-energy sets I’ve ever played,” Rayska reminisced about her Pre-Women’s Day Party performance. “I amped up the energy in the room and made sure to keep it up there for the full 45 minutes. I was really looking forward to jamming with all my girls and fellow artists, with all of us behind the console, just having the absolute best time. It was definitely a surreal experience for me, and I genuinely wish I could do it all over again.” *Image via Welupt Collective* We have Rayska tracing the inception of her DJing journey, her rationale for not sticking to one genre, the groundbreaking performance at Pre-Women’s Day Party, diversity and inclusivity within the dance music scene and more! **TFword**: **It’s quite unlikely to see an all-girls event or a majorly female-forward line-up here. Would you consider exclusive events like these to be a significant step-up for more visibility of female or gender non-conforming artists?** **RAYSKA**: It’s honestly very refreshing to see an event like this getting the attention it deserves. It’s no secret that women, non-binary people, and queer artists in the industry have to push themselves a lot harder to be taken seriously and gain respect in such a male-dominated space. A female-forward lineup is hopefully going to become less unlikely and much more common in the near future. A big shout-out to the Welupt Collective for curating this event and always providing a platform for female, queer, and non-binary artists. Events like these are definitely a step in the right direction. **TF**: **You shared the decks with some of the leading female acts in India at the Pre-Women’s Day Party. How would you say this experience differed from playing alongside male or mostly-male featuring line-ups? **RAYSKA****: It was so exciting to be a part of such an amazing lineup. It’s an honor and a great opportunity for me to be a part of this. It gave me a different experience just seeing so many women behind the decks supporting one another. Not that performing with men is a bad experience, but it just goes to show how much female artists support each other. And being a part of that was a very beautiful experience. Something that I hope I can experience more of because there is truly nothing more fun than a bunch of talented girls on stage jamming together and making the crowd go crazy! **TF: The amalgamation of electronic music and hip-hop shone through at the show. As a mashup expert yourself, share your thoughts about the fusion of two genres that took place live. **RAYSKA****: Hip hop is something that is very intertwined with the general public here. It’s a genre that can’t disappoint here in Mumbai. A lot of the DJs around here are picking up on that and using it as a tool to create something new and different—something with a personal touch. It creates a very unique listening experience, hearing a dubstep version of your favorite hip hop song. It becomes even more unique, which is why a lot of my mashups try to bring a new fusion of the two very vast genres together. **TF: Considering the lack of inclusive and gender-expansive events within the dance music community in India, what do you think the community can do to support more diversity and equality across the genre and scene? **RAYSKA****: I feel like there definitely needs to be more space for women, people who are AFAB, and queer artists to gain opportunities in this industry. Not for the sake of inclusivity, but because there are some of the most talented, creative, and hardworking artists out there who just don’t have the respect and opportunity to be who they are and showcase their art. People don’t even know what they’re missing out on, which is why events like this one are essential. Weneed more people, more organizers, more venues, to put their trust in newtalent and give female, queer, and non-binary artists the opportunity toflourish in this space. *Image via Welupt Collective* **TF: Having previously worked with Welupt for WatchaPlayin, what led you to partake in the Pre Women’s Day gig and what do you think of this initiative by the collective? **RAYSKA****: Welupt is a collective that puts the artist first. They work at giving all the artists they work with a non-stressful, fun experience and ensure a great platform for them to showcase their art. I love the people there, what they stand for, and I love working with them. When they came up with the concept for this event, I knew I’d love to be a part of it because I knew they would do justice to it, from the lineup to the curation of the event. I respect that they always aim to elevate their shows more and more with each gig, and I respect that they put in their all to make sure this event was a success—and it was. **TF: How did your journey as Rayska begin?** ****RAYSKA****: Music and performing are all I’ve ever known, right from the start. There wasn’t anything else I wanted more than to be a musician and live performer. Rayska came to life in the 8th grade when my parents gave me 12 DJ lessons for my 14th birthday. From there, I never looked back. Rayska was like a platform, a part of me that I could put out into the world—the musician and performer I’ve always wanted to be. I’ve been performing for over seven years now. It’s been a very bumpy journey to be taken seriously, and it’s been very hard to have a steady flow of gigs coming in. But no matter what, there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing. **TF: Your name is synonymous with brilliant mashups across genres. Talk to us about your creative process of selecting and mixing these tracks, and why you opt out of restricting your sets to one genre. **RAYSKA****: Making mashups is probably my favorite and most therapeutic thing to do. I really don’t focus on the quantity of mashups I put out. I’m very mindful about making sure the lines between creating content and creating art that I’m proud of aren’t blurred. Most of the time, I sit with an instrumental that has been stuck in my head for a while, go through my playlists, and let my mind figure out what sounds great. Hell, I’ve even done Britney Spears and The Neighborhood. I don’t drop the idea until I try it because it could be two of the most different songs you’ve ever heard in your life, which makes the first thought in your head say, “How would those two even work?” So that’s essentially what I try to do—I try to make them work and give you a new listening experience by making you hear two things you thought would never work together and make it the best thing you’ve heard all day. This is why I make sure my sets are dynamic and diverse, ensuring that I make them work smoothly through all the diversity. **TF: What’s in the pipeline for you in 2025?** ****RAYSKA****: For 2025, I’d like to keep it simple. I want to make live gigs and performing my main priority because there’s really nothing that makes me feel more alive than being on stage. I’d like to make a lot more art that I’m proud of, whether it’s mashups, music videos, poetry, or video edits. And I’d like to be healthy and happy. That’s pretty much it. I’d like to push myself more, put myself out there, and take up space. I work very hard at what I do, and I have so much in store that I’d like the world to see and appreciate.
