From ‘World Press Freedom Day’, which is observed on May 3, to ‘World No-Tobacco Day’ marked on May 31, we have compiled a long list of all the Awareness Days and weeks celebrated in May 2022 that you should know of to help bring a change.

With so many things going on around the world, we must raise awareness of these issues concerning us and the people on this planet. One such way of doing so is by observing international days and weeks that are occasions held to educate the public on issues of concern.

## May 2, 2022

## World Tuna Day 

In December 2016, the United Nations General Assembly [ voted](http://undocs.org/en/A/RES/71/124)  to officially observe World Tuna Day to  [underline](https://www.un.org/en/observances/tuna-day)  the importance of conservation management. This was to ensure that we have systems in place to prevent tuna stocks from crashing as many countries depend heavily on tuna resources for food security and nutrition,  [states](https://www.un.org/en/observances/tuna-day)  the UN website. The nations also depend on it for “economic development, employment, government revenue, livelihoods, culture, and recreation.”

## World Press Freedom Day

“May 3 acts as a  [reminder](https://www.un.org/en/observances/press-freedom-day)  to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom,” states the UN website. World Press Freedom Day is also a day of “reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics. It is an opportunity to:

- celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom;
- assess the state of press freedom throughout the world;
- defend the media from attacks on their independence;
- and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.” [states](https://www.un.org/en/observances/press-freedom-day) the UN website.”

This year’s World Press Freedom Day theme is “ [Journalism under digital siege](https://en.unesco.org/commemorations/worldpressfreedomday) .” It spotlights the multiple ways in which journalism is endangered by surveillance. It also underlines the “digitally-mediated attacks on journalists, and the  [consequences](https://www.un.org/en/observances/press-freedom-day)  of all this on public trust in digital communications.”

## May 5, 2022

## World Portuguese Language Day \[UNESCO\]

As per UNESCO, May 5 is [observed](https://en.unesco.org/commemorations/portuguese-language-day) as World Portuguese Language Day to celebrate the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures. It was officially established in 2009.

## May 8, 2022

## Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives During the Second World War

This day is marked to pay tribute to all victims of the Second World War. In 2004, the UN General Assembly declared it a time of remembrance and reconciliation.

## May 10, 2022

## International Day of Argania

The  [multipurpose](https://www.un.org/en/observances/argania-day)  tree argan tree ( *Argania Spinosa* ) is a native species of the sub-Saharan region of Morocco. It supports income generation, increases resilience, and improves climate adaptation. The argan tree “ [plays](https://www.un.org/en/observances/argania-day)  a very important role in achieving the three dimensions of sustainable development,” states the UN website. They are – economic, social, and environmental – at the local level.

## May 14, 2022

## World Migratory Bird Day

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is observed on May 14. It is an “ [awareness-raising](https://www.unep.org/events/un-day/world-migratory-bird-day-0)  campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.” The day “ [aims](https://www.unep.org/events/un-day/world-migratory-bird-day-0)  to draw attention to the threats faced by migratory birds, their ecological importance, and the need for international cooperation to conserve them,” as per the UN website.

## International Day of Families

The International Day of Families is celebrated on May 15 and its theme this year is – “Families and Urbanization”. It “ [aims](https://www.un.org/en/observances/international-day-of-families)  to raise awareness on the importance of sustainable, family-friendly urban policies.” The UN website  [states](https://www.un.org/en/observances/international-day-of-families) : “Urbanization is one of the most important megatrends shaping our world and the life and wellbeing of families worldwide.”

## May 16, 2022

## International Day of Living Together in Peace

“Living together in peace is all about accepting differences,”  [states](https://www.un.org/en/observances/living-in-peace-day)  the UN website. It is having the “ [ability](https://www.un.org/en/observances/living-in-peace-day)  to listen to, recognize, respect, and appreciate others, as well as living in a peaceful and united way.”

The International Day of Living Together in Peace “ [invites](https://www.un.org/en/observances/living-in-peace-day)  countries to further promote reconciliation to help to ensure peace and sustainable development.” This includes “ [working](https://www.un.org/en/observances/living-in-peace-day)  with communities, faith leaders and other relevant actors, through reconciliatory measures and acts of service and encouraging forgiveness and compassion among individuals.”

After World War II, the UN was established to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”, with one of its purposes being to “ [achieve](https://www.un.org/en/observances/living-in-peace-day)  international cooperation in solving international problems.” This includes “ [promoting](https://www.un.org/en/observances/living-in-peace-day)  and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion.”

## International Day of Light

The International Day of Light is celebrated on 16 May. It is the anniversary of the first successful operation of laser in 1960. This operation was done by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman. The International Day of Light is a “call to strengthen scientific cooperation and harness its potential to foster peace and sustainable development,”  [states](http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0025/002589/258963e.pdf)  the UNESCO website.

This day “ [celebrates](http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0025/002589/258963e.pdf)  the role light plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development.” It includes fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy. The celebration of the International Day of Light, according to UNESCO “ [allows](http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0025/002589/258963e.pdf)  many different sectors of society worldwide to participate in activities that demonstrate how science, technology, art, and culture can help achieve the goals of UNESCO – building the foundation for peaceful societies.”

## Vesak, the Day of the Full Moon

“Vesak” is the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May. It is the most “sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world as on the Day of Vesak two and a half millennia ago, in the year 623 B.C. Buddha was  [born](https://www.un.org/en/observances/vesak-day) ”. Buddha also “ [attained](https://www.un.org/en/observances/vesak-day)  enlightenment on the day of Vesak and in his eightieth year passed away on the Day.”

“The teachings of the Buddha, and his message of compassion and peace and goodwill have  [moved](https://www.un.org/en/observances/vesak-day)  millions” around the world who follow the teachings of the Buddha. On the Day of Vesak, “they  [commemorate](https://www.un.org/en/observances/vesak-day)  the birth, the attainment of enlightenment and the passing away of the Buddha,”  [states](https://www.un.org/en/observances/vesak-day)  the UN website.

A message from the former Secretary-General, Javier Perez de Cuellar, to Buddhists on the Day of Vesak in May 1986 [reads](https://www.un.org/en/observances/vesak-day) : “For Buddhists everywhere it is indeed a felicitous opportunity while commemorating the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Gautama Buddha, to celebrate his message of compassion and devotion to the service of humanity. This message is today perhaps more relevant than ever before.”

## World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is observed on May 17. The purpose of the day is to “help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies,”  [states](https://www.un.org/en/observances/telecommunication-day)  the UN website. This includes ways to bridge the digital divide.

## World Bee Day

According to the UN website, in order to “ [raise](https://undocs.org/en/A/RES/72/211)  awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN-designated 20 May as [ World Bee Day](https://undocs.org/en/A/RES/72/211) .” Their goal is to “ [strengthen](https://www.un.org/en/observances/bee-day)  measures aimed at protecting bees and other pollinators.” This would significantly contribute to “ [solving](https://undocs.org/en/A/RES/72/211)  problems related to the global food supply and eliminate hunger in developing countries.”

## International Tea Day

Tea is the world’s most-consumed drink, after water. It is believed to have been originating in northeast India, north Myanmar, and southwest China. The UN website states “the exact place where the plant first grew is not known.” Tea has been with us for a long time, and there is “evidence that it was  [consumed](https://www.un.org/en/observances/tea-day)  in China 5,000 years ago.”

According to the UN, the tea industry is the main source of income and  [export](https://www.un.org/en/observances/tea-day)  revenues for some of the poorest countries. As the tea industry is a labor-intensive sector, it “ [provides](https://www.un.org/en/observances/tea-day) jobs, especially in remote and economically disadvantaged areas.” “Tea can play a significant role in rural development, poverty reduction and food security in developing countries, being one of the most important cash crops,”  [states](https://www.un.org/en/observances/tea-day)  the UN website.

## World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

The UN declared May 21 as World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The Second Committee of the UN General Assembly unanimously “ [adopted](https://www.un.org/en/observances/tea-day)  the resolution on Culture and Sustainable Development affirming culture’s contribution to the three dimensions of sustainable development, acknowledging further the natural and cultural diversity of the world, and recognizing that cultures and civilizations can contribute to, and are crucial enablers of, sustainable development,” as per the UN website.

The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development [provides](https://www.un.org/en/observances/tea-day) us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity. It also gives us a chance to “advance the four goals of the[UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions](http://en.unesco.org/creativity/convention) adopted on 20 October 2005:

- Support sustainable systems of governance for culture
- Achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services and increase mobility of artists and cultural professionals
- Integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks

## International Day for Biological Diversity

May 22 is marked as International Day for Biological Diversity. “Despite all our technological advances we are completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems,”  [states](https://www.un.org/en/observances/biological-diversity-day)  the UN website. We depend on them for our water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy, just to name a few.

The theme for the Day in 2022 is “Building a shared future for all life” which is fitting within the context of the ongoing [ United Nations Decade on Restoration](https://www.decadeonrestoration.org/) . It “ [highlights](https://www.un.org/en/observances/biological-diversity-day)  that biodiversity is the answer to several sustainable development challenges,” states the UN website. “The slogan  [conveys](https://www.un.org/en/observances/biological-diversity-day)  the message that biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better.”

The UN website  [wrote](https://www.un.org/en/observances/biological-diversity-day) : “From ecosystem-based approaches to climate and/or nature-based solutions to climate, health issues, food and water security and sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better.”

## International Day to End Obstetric Fistula

International Day to End Obstetric Fistula is observed on May 23 as an Obstetric fistula is one of the most serious and tragic childbirth injuries. “A hole between the birth canal and bladder and/or rectum, it is  [caused](https://www.un.org/en/observances/end-fistula-day)  by prolonged, obstructed labor without access to timely, high-quality medical treatment,” according to the UN. It  [leaves](https://www.un.org/en/observances/end-fistula-day)  women with incontinence problems.

This also often leads to chronic medical problems, depression, social isolation, and deepening poverty. This problem is  [preventable](https://www.un.org/en/observances/end-fistula-day)  with the correct medical assistance. Its “ [occurrence](https://www.un.org/en/observances/end-fistula-day)  is a violation of human rights and a reminder of gross inequities,” as per the UN website. The theme for this year is “Women’s rights are human rights! End fistula now!”
