The Most Anticipated Series of August 2021

With the many series released on different OTT platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, Netflix, etc., it can be a little complicated to keep track of some exciting series coming out. We thought we’d help you catch up with some of the most anticipated releases every month by compiling a list of limited series, new releases, as well as series that are back with their latest seasons on different streaming platforms. Keep an eye on this space every month so you don’t miss some amazing releases!

 

The Chair

The Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve star Sandra Oh is cast as Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim on the Netflix dramedy – ‘The Chair’ that follows her navigating her new role as the Chair of the English department at an esteemed university. She is also one of the few staff members of color at the university.

She is faced with a set of challenges trying to meet the dizzying demands and high expectations as the first woman of color to become Chair. Featuring Everly Carganilla, Jay Duplass, Nana Mensah, Holland Taylor, and Bob Balaban, The Chair premieres on Netflix on August 20th.

What If…?

Marvel Studios’ first animated series ‘What If…?’ turns over the script on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It reimagines the films in unexpected ways and features fan-favorite and iconic characters including Peggy Carter, T’Challa, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, Thor, and more!

Directed by Bryan Andrews, ‘What If…?’ features a voice cast that includes a host of stars such as Haley Atwell, Chadwick Boseman, Sebastian Stan, Karen Gillan who reprise their roles. With Ashley Bradley as the head writer on the new series that comes to Disney+, the signature MCU action will have a curious twist. ‘What If…?’ started streaming on August 11 with new episodes Wednesdays on Disney+.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

The popular sitcom ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ is back for “One Last Ride” with their eighth and final season that premiered on August 12 with two back-to-back episodes starting at 8 PM on NBC, and new episodes airing each Thursday. This season will have ten episodes.

The series stars Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta and Andre Braugher as Captain Holt – an eccentric commanding officer. Throughout the series, his diverse and quirky team of odd detectives can be seen solving crimes in Brooklyn, New York City.

The latest and final season follows NYPD’s 99th Precinct’s Det. Jake Peralta and Captain. Raymond Holt along with their lovely and admirable colleagues balance their personal as well as professional lives over the course of a difficult year.

After drawing criticism for its sympathetic portrayal of law enforcement in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, the Co-creator Dan Goor and the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine made a USD 100,000 (INR 7424750.00) donation to the National Bail Fund Network to support “the many people who are protesting police brutality”. Last year, the show’s executive producer Dan Goor stated that Season eight would address issues of police brutality and systemic inequality.

 

Nine Perfect Strangers

Nine Perfect Strangers is a Hulu Original mini-series coming to Amazon Prime Video on August 20. It is a drama Based on The New York Times best-selling book by author Liane Moriarty, “Nine Perfect Strangers”.

This eight-part series follows nine stressed city-dwellers who head to a ten-day retreat at a boutique health-and-wellness resort. This resort promises healing and transformation as they try to improve and get on a path to a better way of living.

The resort’s director Martha (Nicole Kidman) makes it her mission to re-energize the tired minds and bodies of the group. However, the nine strangers at this picturesque wellness retreat have no idea what is about to hit them. Along with Nicole Kidman, ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ features Regina Hall, Melissa McCarthy, Manny Jacinto, Samara Weaving, and more amazing actors! Watch this mini-drama series on Amazon Prime Video on August 20 and it will be out on Hulu on August 18.

 

Clickbait

A family man Nick Brewer (Adrian Grenier) suddenly and mysteriously disappears. He appears to be a perfect husband, father, and brother but things take a turn for the worse when he is abducted. There is a sinister online twist to his kidnapping and those closest to him race to uncover who is doing this to Nick and what is the reason behind it.

‘Clickbait’ is a Netflix thriller. So, grab your snacks and sit tight to get invested in this drama. This new limited series is out on August 25 only on Netflix!

Cruel Summer

‘Cruel Summer’ is a psychological thriller set in a small town in Texas that follows two young women – Kate Wallis and Jeanette Turner. One day, Kate – the popular one with a charming life goes missing without a trace, and Jeanette goes from being the awkward, outcast to the most popular girl in town.

The latter is somehow accused of being connected to Kate’s disappearance and by 1995 she becomes the most-hated person in America. ‘Cruel Summer’ is available on Amazon Prime Video from August 6 onwards!

Bake Squad

Four expert bakers are selected by pastry chef Christina Tosi to elevate desserts with next-level ideas and epic execution. These incredibly talented bakers battle it out to see whose desserts win over the clients in need of exceptional sweets for an extra special big day.

This might be the sweetest show to watch this month, all thanks to the outstanding four bakers – Maya-Camille Broussard, Ashley Holt, Christophe Rull, and Gonzo Jimenez as well as host Christina Tosi, founder of Milk Bar. Watch ‘Bake Squad’ now on Netflix!

The L Word: Generation Q

The second season of ‘The L Word: Generation Q’ is now on Disney+ Hotstar with new episodes out every Friday at 9:30 AM IST. The series is the sequel of ‘The L Word’ and has returned with a younger generation of Los Angeles’ diverse, self-possessed LGBTQIA+ characters experiencing love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks, and success.

Growing Up Animal

If you thought your childhood was wild, witness the first breaths, steps, stumbles, and lessons of baby animals in the Disney+ Original Series ‘Growing Up Animal’ out on August 18. This series will take you on an extraordinary adventure of baby animals and will tell you stories from the time they are in the womb to the outside world’s trials and triumphs of nature.

This six-part Original Series from National Geographic is narrated by Emmy-nominated star of Black-ish, Tracee Ellis Ross. Each episode is hour-long in ‘Growing Up Animals’ and gives you an intimate look into the birth of a different iconic animal.  The animals include grizzlies, sea lions, elephants, and more!

 

Modern Love

‘Modern Love’ is back with its second season on Amazon Prime Video from August 13 onwards! This series in which love breaks all the rules is based on a column that explores relationships, love, and the human connection.

Every episode of this anthology series brings to life a different story of relationships as they are inspired by true events from the popular newspaper New York Times column called ‘Modern Love’.
