Winners of the 49th American Music Awards 2021

The 49th Annual American Music Awards were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles today.

The night that recognizes the most popular artists, singles, and albums of 2021 was hosted by the iconic rapper Cardi B. She becomes the only female rapper in history to do so.

The ‘Driver’s License’ hitmaker Olivia Rodrigo had a fantabulous year in music this year and led the 2021 nominee with seven nominations in the first year she is eligible. This includes the ‘Artist Of The Year and ‘New Artist Of The Year’.

Five-time winner and the ‘Blinding Lights’ singer The Weeknd was nominated for six American Music Awards, going up against Olivia Rodrigo in the ‘Artist Of The Year’ category along with BTS, Ariana Grande, Drake, and Taylor Swift.

Reggaeton star Bad Bunny, R&B newcomer Giveon and Doja Cat each had five nominations each and the ‘New Artist Of The Year’ category, Rodrigo joined Giveon, 24KGoldn, Masked Wolf, and The Kid LAROI.

The AMAs added new categories this year, including ‘Favorite Trending Song’, ‘Favorite Gospel Artist’, and ‘Favorite Latin Duo Or Group’.

Rapper Pop Smoke, who was killed last year, had three nominations at the 2021 AMAs. These include ‘Favorite Hip-Hop Album’ and ‘Favorite Hip-Hop Artist’.

According to the American Music Awards website, “AMA nominees are based on key fan interactions with music (including streaming, album sales, song sales, radio airplay, social engagement), tracked by Billboard and its data partner MRC Data.  The AMA winners are voted entirely by fans”.

BTS had a huge night as they won every award they were nominated for including the ‘Favorite Pop Duo or Group’  (for the third time in a row). Taylor Swift who took the award for the ‘Favorite Female Pop Artist’ also broke her own record for the most AMA wins in history!
