Drug and Food Administration of Thailand  [presented](https://www.forbes.com/sites/dariosabaghi/2022/01/27/thailand-has-become-the-first-asian-country-to-decriminalize-recreational-cannabis/?sh=439060db4b21)  the move to withdraw cannabis from a list of controlled drugs to the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB). Once signed by the health minister, the proposal will come into effect 120 days after its publishing in the gazette. Thailand was also the first Southeast Asian country to legalize medical cannabis in 2018. It authorized the production, import, export, possession and use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. However, this legal status did have restrictions. It has its uses in medicine as well as a recreational drug. Studies on its medicinal value have not reached its full potential due to it being banned in many nations. According to a  [report](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1257954/thailand-forecast-the-cannabis-market-value/#statisticContainer)  released in May 2019, on cannabis by Statista (a company specializing in market and consumer data), the market for recreational cannabis was forecast to reach 424.1 million U.S. dollars in 2024 in Thailand.
