The Best Looks From the New York Fashion Week 2022

New York Fashion Week has now concluded, and the designers this season did NOT disappoint!

Among the top designers, Tom Ford, who was supposed to close the show, sat out this Fashion Week. He said he could not finalize a collection. The reason? You guessed it – Covid-related staffing issues. From Ulla Johnson’s bohemian chic and professional looks, the detailing in Brandon Maxwell’s pieces, to Altuzarra’s looks inspired by sea explorers and nautical mythological creatures, we look at some of the best looks showcased at the New York Fashion Week Fall 2022.

Proenza Schouler fall 2022 ready-To-Wear

Proenza Schouler is all about the waist, easiness, and sophistication!

The showcase began with a violin quintet performing an original composition by Queens-based musician, Eartheater. Donning a series of eclectic silhouettes and flowing designs, models, including the in-demand Bella Hadid, took to the ramp clad in what could easily be the brand’s best work yet. The event took place at Brant Foundation, an art center in Manhattan’s East Village. Most outfits that were showcased by Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez (founders of Proenza Schouler) focused on wrapping/hugging their wearers. The garments were voluminous, with fabrics attached to the waist of the clothes and a polished focus on peplum!

British designer Christian Cowan brought his guests up to the One World Observatory and said, “Last season was very much the party girl; this season is the gala girl.”

According to Vogue, he called the presentation the “highest high-fashion show ever.” Overlooking the Hudson River more than a hundred stories high among the clouds seems like the perfect background to showcase a glitzy collection that draws inspiration from Old Hollywood glamour. The collection features pieces that you can see a person of any age can wear and rock! Meanwhile, others seem like something that the youth might see themselves in.

Tanya Taylor Fall 2022 ready-To-Wear

Wide belts, gloves and feathers were the highlights of the Tanya Taylor collection this year. It gave us serious “art girl” vibes.

Experimenting with a darker mood, the background of the accompanying video of the collection is fitting! It was shot at the abstract impressionist painter Elaine de Kooning’s former home in East Hampton, New York. The highlight of this residence, and the video were exquisite, large slanted windows, adding to the collection’s overall visual appeal. “We played with a lot of new fabrics and silhouettes and took a big step forward for the brand,” Taylor explains, as per Vogue. The collection reflects an abstract painting; its outfits are cute, and won’t be easy to forget! We will, of course, dream of those balloon sleeves for eternity.

All eyes on the gorgeous ruffles, waist-action, and bows at the Jason Wu Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear collection showcase.

Jason Wu drew inspiration from the golden era of Hollywood for this collection – the glorious 1950s. His collection recasts the expressive volumes of the decade to brilliantly deliver them to present-day haute couture.

His collection recasts the physical volumes of 1950s haute couture and brilliantly delivers on the fashion illustrations of the 1950s which he looked at for inspiration. The marigold dresses were the stars of the show!

 

Maisie Wilen Fall 2022 ready-To-Wear

Maisie Wilen is WAY ahead of her time!

Wilen’s Fall 2022 collection is extremely inventive, a first-of-its-kind holographic experience! The immersive nature of Wilen’s show was impressive! It utilized Yahoo’s volumetric capture technology to transform models into towering muses modeled after characters from Monster High. The showcase and the hologram blur the line between reality and fantasy.

Christian Siriano Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear

Creating interesting shapes and contrasts, there is lots of blue on the collection. The Christian Siriano Fall 2022 collection, titled ‘Victorian Matrix’ followed a strict color palette, consisting of blues, beiges and greys.

Some of the best pieces on the collection include a shiny leather suit that screamed Matrix, the blue leather dress with coordinating gloves and a dark dress with a blue billowing cape. Siriano’s collection definitely made a noise!

Kim Shui Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear

With the initial pieces reminding us of Clueless, Kim Shui’s Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear collection features sexy, sheer mesh pieces with Shui using a wider variety of materials and techniques.

Audience favorites include the sheer black top, but all the outfits separately look stunning! According to Vogue, Shui said she was looking back at her earliest collections and returning to fabrics and stories she felt she hadn’t fully explored.

In his most personal show yet, Brandon Maxwell paid an emotional tribute to his grandmother who is now suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He credits his grandmother for his passion for design and said, “She’s a big part of my life,” at a preview.

“I was going back to when I was a kid: While she was cooking I’d be in the backroom taking blankets and wrapping them around my sister, emptying out her jewelry box, and making my sister carry one of her bags. When we decided to do a show, I wanted to make something that if it was my last one it would be a bookend that I was proud of.” There were recurring motifs at the show he remembers from his youth. These included blanket shawls, antique jewelry, clutch bags, with even the fabric appearing as though they had been chosen to feel like home.

This poignant show was so thoughtful that the flowers on Karlie Kloss’s finale dress were taken from a painting he asked his grandfather to make in his grandmother’s honor, as per Vogue.  There was a soft tone to the collection that combined comfort and glamour.

Naeem Khan Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear

Filled with sequined pieces, the Naeem Khan all 2022 Ready-To-Wear collection shines all the way through featuring more densely layered sequins interspersed with feathers!

According to Vogue, the inspiration for these all-over sparkles came from the American designer Norman Norell’s mermaid dresses, one of which Marilyn Monroe wore to accept her 1962 Golden Globe award.

Ulla Johnson gave bohemian-chic vibes on the runway with this collection, featuring detailed, textured patterns that convey feminity, sophistication, and professionalism. “Backstage Johnson mentioned Allen’s sculptures as an influence; his polymorphous bronzes, recently on view in New York, inspired the collection’s metallic textiles (some made with actual metal thread) and bold but graceful volumes,” stated Vogue on their website.

“It was about communing with nature and giving into wanderlust,” Altuzarra said. “I loved the idea of this narrative of a sailor that’s seduced and then transformed into a mermaid,” and that is what the runway show progresses into.

Joseph Altuzarra dug into the theme. He made a maxi skirt combo from a knit his studio developed. It looked like the scalloped pattern of fish scales. The mermaids wore net dresses. These dresses are fully embroidered in graduated metal sequins with a patina that looked like it had been aged by seawater.

Wes Gordon’s collection – Carolina Herrera Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear is a colorful, upbeat showcase that has a playful streak. “Our customer is looking for pieces that celebrate the moment. She wants the wow from Herrera—to live in the moment, to get dressed,” says Gordon.

Stuart Vevers had a design philosophy for this collection. It was to revisit the things he—and his customers—have loved most from Coach. Vevers wanted to organize the show in small capsules rather than adhere to a single, overarching theme.

Tory Burch Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear

Tory Burch was all about the waist and variety. The collection featured tech-knit track jackets. These are worn with high-waisted, tapering pants. On the other hand, the voluminous jackets and skirts were reined in with dramatic belts.

LaQuan Smith Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear

New York designer LaQuan Smith brought fire to the runway with this bold collection. Julia Fox opened the runway show wearing a black turtleneck dress with bold chest cutouts. The designer wanted to dial up the sex factor for fall which is why you see the sequins, mink coats, and extremely-mini skirts on the collection. “This collection was really about the revival of New York City and celebrating life again,” said Smith. “I wanted to create a collection that gave women a sense of hope and celebration.”

Dion Lee’s collection has multi-wear potential and radiates sexual tension. This brand’s popular braided knit dresses are back. They now come with even more holes and slits.  This is so that they can transform it into tanks or halters with ease.

Elegancy, expressive cuts, a color palette of black, white, camel, and gray were showcased on the Peter Do Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear runway. “I was a bit more selfish this season,” he began before the show, as per Vogue. “I wanted to do fashion that feels the most me, the most personal. I really like the suit. I like that it takes time to make, that you don’t need to buy many, and that when you find a good one, it becomes your safe space. I want to be that for women.”

Michael Kors’ collection was glamorous. The standouts were yellow, or shocking pink cashmere or faux fur. It included suiting in classic menswear materials and shapes. The luxurious showcase had athletically inclined eveningwear too! As per Vogue, the inspiration for Kors’ clutch coats was Marilyn Monroe. “There’s not a single full-on evening look that’s not as easy as a T-shirt,” he said.

Anna Sui’s Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear is all about retro ideas!

The new silhouettes on the collection are accompanied by cute animal bags. This is inspired by a ’90s original James Coviello designed for her way back. Leaping from era to era, idea to idea, the collection features his-and-hers green plaid blazers and shearlings. One of the pieces that stood out is a completely sequined zebra stripe halter and flared trouser set.

Prabal Gurung Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear

“It’s a tale of two cities,” Prabal Gurung said of his new fall collection, “the city I live in, New York, and the city that I long for, Kathmandu.” Gurung’s design on the Fall 2022 collection moves from a palette of jewel tones to bright colors with some edgy styles. He also highlighted his country’s national flower – the rhododendron.
