She was currently being treated for acute myeloid leukemia, cancer in the bone marrow. The patient received a stem cell transplant from a donor, who was resistant to the AIDS-causing virus. News of this medical breakthrough was announced at the 29th annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Jingmei Hsu (expert on Bone Marrow and Stem cell transplant) and Dr. Koen van Besien (Director of the Stem Cell Transplant Program) worked with Dr. Marshall Glesby (Infectious disease expert), who led the trials and worked on the treatment.
