River flooding is one of the most common natural disasters in Australia. However, over the course of a single week, this storm accounted for more than a year’s worth of rain. Thousands of people have been displaced as a result of the flooding. It has also destroyed property, roads, and railways lines. Vehicles are stranded in muddy waters and houses have been swamped, requiring extensive rescue efforts. Despite the fact that floods replenish Australia’s wetlands and contribute to the lifecycle of many plants and animals, they exact a hefty toll. The region has seen a scramble to protect and rescue Australia’s animals, similar to the rescue activities after the wildfires in 2020. Wires Animal Rescue, Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organization, has reported that they have rescued exhausted seabirds, wet possums, orphaned wallabies, and kangaroo joeys so far.
