‘Mumia’ is a name used in the early fourteenth and fifteenth century to describe powered human mummified flesh utilized for medical purposes. Explorer Christopher Columbus is said to have mentioned a group of people known as the ‘Caribs,’ who loot and rave while abducting women and eating the males.
‘Man from the Deep River’ and ‘Cannibal Holocaust‘ are one of the earliest depictions of the cannibal genre released in the year the 1970s and 1980s. Cinema has evolved, and so has its take on the human flesh-eating genre. Directed by Mimi Cave, ‘Fresh’ is a more refreshing and modern take on the horror genre.
Audiences have been entertained by this genre of horror films for many decades. With the recent release of Hulu’s ‘Fresh,’ starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan, we’ve compiled a list of television shows that have depicted this taboo subgenre of horror cinema.
American Horror Story: Roanoke
American Horror Story is a horror-drama television anthology series, with each season taking place in a different venue and time period. The show is a work of fiction and fact that depicts real-life events and narratives. Its sixth season, titled ‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’, airs a TV show within the series called ‘My Roanoke Nightmare’.
The season is split into two parts, one chronicles the Miller family’s lives, and the other is a reality program in which contestants spend three days at their old farmhouse. When the reality stars are seized with the intention of being eaten by ‘The Polk’ family, the nightmare continues.
Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, Roanoke stars the’ American Horror Story’ series’ regular cast members such as Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, and Evan Peters.

Santa Clarita Diet
‘Santa Clarita Diet‘ is a horror-comedy show of an undead zombie craving human meat starring Drew Barrymore. The three-season sitcom was a comedic take on the act of consuming human flesh. ‘Sheila Hammond’ is a real estate agent in Santa Clarita, California. She finds herself sick one day after having an episode during a house presentation. Later, she is labeled as ‘undead’ after spending time in a hospital. Her personality changes for the better, however, she develops a taste for human flesh. Her family and she attempt to maintain their new lifestyle while simultaneously searching for a cure.
Drew Barrymore is supported by actors Timothy Olyphant, Liv Hewson, and Skyler Gisondo in the comedy horror series. Victor Fresco is the creative mind behind the show.

‘Peter Rumancek’, a werewolf, is the main suspect in a series of savage murders in Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania. He teams up with a half-human half vampiric being ‘Roman Godfrey’ to solve the mystery behind the murder. The vampiric being known as ‘Upirs’ are immortals with superhuman strength, predatory senses, and an unquenchable desire for blood and raw tissue.
Famke Janssen (‘Jean Grey’ in the ‘X Men Franchise’), Bill Skarsgård (‘Castle Rock’, ‘It’) star in the series spanning three seasons alongside Landon Liboiron, Dougray Scott, and Freya Tingley. The series is based on a novel by Brian McGreevy of the same name.
American Horror Story: Coven
The second entry of ‘American Horror Story’ on our list is its depiction of Marie Delphine LaLaurie in the third season – Conven. Delphine LaLaurie was formerly a well-known personality in New Orleans. Her Black slaves were reported to have been cruelly tortured and slain in her mansion. In the show, she keeps her youth by applying the blood of her slaves on herself. Her insidious acts are not limited to her slaves, but also her family.
Kathy Bates plays the infamous Marie Delphine LaLaurie, a recurring role through multiple seasons of the show. She won an Emmy award for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie’ in 2014.

The Walking Dead: Terminus
After numerous survival escapades and the killing of zombies, the seasons continued to introduce more dilemmas and heartbreaking situations for Rick Grimes and his crew to deal with. His group of survivors finds a map route to a place known as ‘Terminus’ at various times in the build-up to season five. On arriving there, it seemed like a sanctuary for hope for them. They are welcomed there at first, however, the existing residents there hide sinister intentions.
This season of the Walking Dead stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira and Michael Cudlitz.

Chatting with Cannibals
Author and explorer Pierce Gibbon presented a television show in 2010 with a more historical and realistic perspective on Cannibalism. He spent time in the forest and jungles of Papa New Guinea uncovering the truth. Gibbon ventures into the lives of Samo and Biami to understand their history and traditions. He investigates the cannibals’ customary techniques of hunting and killing their victims and whether or not there are any living cannibals in the vicinity.
A documentary on similar lines aired on Vice known as ‘The Cannibal Warlords of Liberia’ in 2012.

The anime fantasy series follows ‘Ken Kaneki’, a teenage college student who develops a craving for human flesh after a date gone wrong. After luring Ken out on a date with his assailant, ‘Rize,’ a ghoul figure, attempts to eat and kill him. He is saved when her organs are used to resurrect him and they blend into one. ‘Ken Kaneki’, a now half-human and half-ghoul, tries to find a balance between his new life and craving for human flesh. He’s a sort of anti-hero who transforms from an innocent teenager into an outlandish Ghoul.
Japanese artist Sui Ishida illustrated the manga series from which ‘Tokyo Ghoul’ is adopted. The series is presented by Pierrot Studios, who are responsible for anime series such as ‘Bleach’, and ‘Naruto.’

Set in the outbacks of Australia, the Moores family live a nomadic lifestyle. Unsettled and constantly moving, they live in a customized caravan. As a family of cannibals, they hunt in the shadows using Patricia as bait to capture their target. Patricia is divided between her desire to live a normal life and satisfying the appetite of her family.
Marlo Kelly plays the titular ‘Patricia Moore’ and is joined by Danielle Cormack, Les Hill, and Joe Klocek. Blake Fraser created the series, which has been nominated for multiple awards in Australia.
Without mentioning this series featuring Dr. Hannibal Lecter, our list would be incomplete. The plot follows ‘Will Graham’ as he investigates murders attributed to serial killers who like displaying the corpses of their victims. ‘Hannibal Lecter’, a well-known psychiatrist, is recruited to help him solve the cases. Unbeknownst to Will and the FBI, Hannibal Lecter, has his own plans. The attention to detail in camerawork, music, and audio is reflected in the cooking scenes, wine pouring, and dream sequences. The searing of meat scenes, exquisite food displays completely mask this psychological thriller series.
‘Hannibal‘ stars Mads Mikkelsen as ‘Dr. Hannibal Lecture’, Hugh Dancy as criminal profiler ‘Will Graham’ and Gillian Anderson as Psychiatrist ‘Bedelia Du Maurier.’ The show was created by Brian Fuller.
The character was created by writer Thomas Harris based on the life of Dr. Alfredo Balli Trevino. Many actors have played the role over the years, including Brian Cox, Anthony Hopkins, and Gaspard Ulliel.
