5 Sandra Oh Movies You Should Watch Before ‘Umma’

Since the 1990s, Sandra Oh has wowed audiences with excellent performances in films, television programs, and voice roles. Her first film role in America was in ‘Bean,’ which was released in 1997 and starred English actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson. 

Since then, she has acted in a number of roles that have earned her several accolades, including the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards. She is most recognized for her roles in the drama series ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ as ‘Cristina Yang’ and the thriller series ‘Killing Eve‘ as ‘Eve Polastri.’ Her first role occurred as a result of an open audition while she was a student at Canada’s National Theater School in the television film ‘The Diary of Evelyn Lau.‘ It was here that she met Mina Shum, the director of her first film ‘Double Happiness.’

So far this year in film, Sandra Oh voiced ‘Ming’ in ‘Turning Red,’ and will star in the horror film ‘Umma.’ We’ve compiled a list of five of her other movie performances to show audiences her range and depth of acting abilities. Her voice performances in the numerous animated films are not included in this list.

Dancing at the Blue Iguana

Five dancers’ stories are intertwined while working at a strip club. The film revolves around strippers’ lives, difficulties, common ideals and issues they face. Each dance performer has their own set of problems, emotional conflicts, and goals they wish to pursue. Sandra Oh plays Jasminean exotic dancer at the San Fernando Valley strip club. Her true calling is as a literary poet, not a strip dancer. She struggles between her passions, dancing, and maintaining a relationship.

Michael Radford directed the erotic drama film. The cast includes Daryl Hannah (‘Kill Bill’), Kristin Bauer van Straten (‘True Blood’), Jennifer Tilly (‘Child’s Play Franchise’) along with Charlotte Ayanna. Actress Daryl Hannah also directed a documentary ‘Strip Notes’ based on her research done for the role.

Long Life, Happiness & Prosperity

A comedy-drama combining positive affirmations, chants, and magic with the innocence of childhood. Mindy Ho, a young teenage girl, makes numerous attempts to improve her family’s circumstances. Abandoned by her father, she wishes for a better, more prosperous life for her mother. Sandra Oh plays ‘Kin Ho Lum,’ a hardworking mother who struggles to make ends meet. Working two jobs – one as a psychic and the other at a restaurant, she has no life beyond work. Her daughter is struggling to come to terms with this situation. The film depicts the numerous situations she finds herself in as a result of her daughter’s attempts to provide her comfort, love, and joy.

Directed by Mina Shum, Sandra Oh is joined by Valerie Tian and Russell Yuen. At the time of writing, director Mina Shum and Sandra Oh have collaborated three times.

Meditation Park

‘Meditation Park’ is a story about a Hong Kong immigrant grandma, who is seeking to break free from her husband. She discovers women’s underwear in his trousers after his 65th birthday celebration. Startled, distraught, and unsure about how to continue her limited lifestyle, she wishes to attain financial independence. Faced with a harsh reality, she ventures forward seeking employment, learning new skills, and spying on her husband’s activities. Sandra Oh portrays her daughter assisting her on her new adventure.

The drama film is directed by Mina Shum and stars Cheng Pei-Pei (‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’), Liane Balaban (‘One Week’), Tzi Ma (‘Kung Fu’ series) and actor and DJ Zak Santiago.

Wilby Wonderful

Wilby Wonderful‘ is a comedy-drama set in the island town of Wilby. After a successful police raid involving sex and drugs, names and details of those apprehended are about to be mentioned in the ‘Island Sentential’ Newspaper. Hiding their own secrets, squabbles, and mysteries, the locals try to maintain a sense of calm. All of this transpires as they get ready for the annual fair. Sandra Oh’s play ‘Carol French’, a real estate agent tasked to manage the town’s festivities. Dealing with her marriage and the mayor takes a toll on her professional and personal life.

James Allodi, Maury Chaykin, Paul Gross, Rebecca Jenkins, Callum Keith Rennie, and Elliot Page star in the movie written and directed by Daniel MacIvor. Callum Keith Rennie and Sandra Oh have also worked together in ‘Last Night‘ (1998) and ‘Double Happiness’ (1994).

Catfight

Our fifth entry on our list is a break away from all the intense drama performances by Sandra Oh. She is cast alongside Anne Heche’ (‘Six Days, Seven Nights‘, ‘The Best of Enemies’) in an all-out war between one-time college mates. ‘Ashley’ is a struggling artist trying to make a name for herself, while ‘Veronica’ enjoys a comfortable married life. Taking different career parts, the two to reacquaint at an event party. After a heated exchange and negative comments, the two have a fistfight which puts Veronica in a coma for two years. She wakes up to find that their lives have drastically changed with Ashley now being a successful artist. Losing everything, Veronica is out for revenge.

Veronica is played by Sandra Oh and Ashley is played by Anne Heche in this comedy movie.‘ Catfight’ was written and directed by filmmaker Onur Tukel and also stars Alicia Silverstone, Tituss Burgess, and Dylan Baker.
