Kanye West, who now goes by the name ‘Ye’, had been scheduled to play the closing night of the two-weekend festival – Coachella, which runs April 15-17 and April 22-24. West has pulled out of his scheduled appearance at the festival and will no longer headline Coachella, a source confirmed to Rolling Stone and Variety.
Reps for West and Coachella have not yet responded to requests for comment, Billboard reported. The news was first reported by TMZ.
The reason for Westâs cancelation was not immediately clear. However, a source told Variety that he had not rehearsed or prepared for his appearance. The rapper also pulled out of a planned headlining appearance at the 2020 festival. This festival was ultimately postponed due to the pandemic.

Westâs decision of pulling out of the festival isnât shocking, as the past several months have been both tumultuous and controversial for the rapper. He has been publicly attacking ex-wife Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson online. This was following his divorce from Kardashian, with multiple reports saying the rapper told his ex-wife that he would be going away from the public eye to seek help.

West was also barred from a planned appearance at this yearâs Grammy Awards due to what was described as his âconcerning online behaviorâ, as per Variety. He canceled the closing dates of his 2016 âSaint Pabloâ tour too. The star was hospitalized for mental health reasons shortly after. Kanye West has said many times that he suffers from bipolar disorder.

This yearâs first two nights of Coachella will be headlined by Harry Styles and Billie Eilish. There were rumors that Travis Scott would be joining Kanye West for the performance. However, TMZ says that he will not be appearing either. Scott had been keeping a low profile. This came after ten people lost their lives in a rush toward the stage during his headlining performance at his Astroworld festival in Houston in October last year.

West has been publicly embracing ostracized celebrities in recent months. This includes Marilyn Manson (who is accused of sexual assault) and DaBaby (who made homophobic remarks in recent months).
Coachella is North Americaâs largest music festival, which is scheduled to take place at its usual location of the Empire Polo Ground in Indio, Calif, this year. It has already sold out 125,000 per-day tickets. The original headliners of this 21st installment of the festival were Travis Scott, Frank Ocean, and Rage Against the Machine. This was first announced in January 2020. This festival has been postponed due to the pandemic four times, with Ocean moving his appearance to 2023 last year.
Scott was removed from the lineup in the wake of the Astroworld tragedy in November last year. Although, sources told Variety that Travis Scottâs agent fought to keep him on. Both Kanye West and Scott collaborate frequently. They are related by Westâs former marriage as his ex-wife Kim Kardashian is Kylie Jennerâs half-sister. Scott shares a daughter and a son with Jenner. Kanye West headlined Coachella in 2011.

Kanye West also threatened to pull out of the festival earlier if fellow headliner Billie Eilish did not apologize to Travis Scott, as per Billboard. West planned to bring out Scott on stage during his set. Kanye West alleged that the âBad Guyâ singer had âdissedâ Scott in a since-deleted post on Instagram on February 10.
The young pop star, Eilish, was helping out a fan in need of an inhaler saying, âI wait for the people to be OK before I keep going,â this was shown according to concert footage. The Yeezy fashion mogul perceived this to be a diss to Scott in light of the Astroworld Tragedy.

âCome on Billie, we love you,â Ye wrote in all-caps at the time, stated Billboard. âPlease apologize to Trav and to the families of the people who lost their lives. No one intended this to happen. Trav didnât have any idea of what was happening, and yes Trav will be with me at Coachella but now I need Billie to apologize before I perform.â

The Oscar-winner Eilish later responded to West in the comments of his post, saying: âLiterally never said a thing about Travis. Was just helping a fan.â
Coachella will take place next week. It begins on April 15. The second weekend of the festival starts on April 22. Along with Billie Eilish, the former One Direction member, Harry Styles, will be headlining Coachellaâs first night. This is the first time Styles will be taking the Coachella stage.
