5 Nicolas Cage Films to Watch if You Liked ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’

Nicolas Cage has a decorated year ahead of him in film. Along with ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’, the actor and film producer currently has four films slated for release in 2022. Having established his name as one of the biggest actors in Hollywood, he hails from the Coppola family. 

This family extends through a list of personalities in Hollywood, including ‘The Godfather’ films director Francis Coppola, ‘Marie Antoinette’ (2006) writer and director Sofia Coppola, and actress Talia Shire known for her portrayal of Adrian Pennino in the ‘Rocky’ film series. In the credits for his first acting appearance in the film ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High,’ he is mentioned as Nicolas Coppola, but he soon changed his stage name to Nicolas Cage. He is a recipient of a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role in the movie ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ (1995).

Throughout his career, the National Treasure star has acted in several notable films such as ‘Con-Air’ (1997), ‘Face/Off’ (1997), ‘Moonstruck’ (1987), and ‘Gone in 60 Seconds‘ (2000), to name a few. In anticipation of his upcoming movie ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’, where Nicolas Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself and as revealed in the trailer will allude to his past performances in film, here are five other movies of his you should watch!

‘Mandy’ is a psychedelic revenge thriller that sees Nicolas Cage’s character completely unhinged and violent. He plays Red Miller, who lives a quiet life with his partner Mandy. She is an artist who gets kidnapped by an evil religious cult. Red Miller sets out on a task to rescue her. The film is no ordinary vengeance story as it also explores themes that include sci-fi elements, drugs, and a dangerous cult following, all depicted with an eerie soundtrack and red lighting.

Alongside Nicolas Cage are actors Andrea Riseborough (‘Oblivion’), Linus Roache (‘Vikings’ series), Bill Duke (‘Predator’), Richard Brake (‘Peaky Blinders’). Elijah Wood serves as one of the producers and Panos Cosmatos directed the movie. Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson produced the music score for the film.

Color Out of Space

The Gardner family’s lives are turned inside out when a meteorite crashes in their front yard. When they first notice large bright flashes of light around them, they realize this extraterrestrial life has sinister intentions.

Cage portrays Nathan Gardner, the father of the family, who is initially in denial of these occurrences until he experiences them for himself. Gardner does everything he can to protect his family as the alien life begins to influence their minds and bodies.

‘Color Out of Space’ cast members includes Madeleine Arthur (‘Snowpiercer’ series), Brendan Meyer (‘The OA’), Elliot Knight (‘Once Upon a Time’), Q’orianka Kilcher (‘Yellowstone’) and Tommy Chong (‘That 70s Show’). South African filmmaker Richard Stanley directs the movie. It is an adaption of the book ‘The Colour Out of Space’ by fantasy, horror fiction writer late H. P. Lovecraft.

Honeymoon in Vegas

Away from the tripping color schemes of the previous two movies is ‘Honeymoon in Vegas’, a comedy movie that premiered in 1992. Jack Singer (Cage) is divided between keeping his promise to his mother that he would never marry and committing to his girlfriend’s plans to marry. The couple intends to flee to Las Vegas and marry there. When in Vegas, Jack loses in a poker game generating a huge debt. Jack spends a weekend with a professional gambler to erase his debt.

The 90s romantic comedy has Nicolas Cage cast alongside Golden Globe winner Sarah Jessica Parker, veteran actor James Caan (‘The Godfather’), and late actor Peter Boyle (‘Everybody Loves Raymond’). Screenwriter Andrew Bergman wrote and directed the movie.

Singer, songwriter, and musician Bruno Mars also makes an appearance in the film as a young Elvis Presley impersonator.

‘Knowing’, a sci-fi apocalyptic movie, sees Cage play the role of MIT astrophysics professor John Koestler. He gets into possession of a sheet of paper with a number sequence written on it. When he breaks down these sequences, he discovers that they are linked to dates, death tolls, and geographic coordinates of major disasters. Koestler now sets out to prevent the next tragedy, while an impending major catastrophe looms near.

This sci-fi flick is directed by Australian film producer Alex Proyas and stars Rose Byrne (‘Instant Family’), Chandler Canterbury (‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’), Ben Mendelsohn (‘Captain Marvel’), and Lara Robinson (‘Saved’).

Nicolas Cage is a huge lover of comic books, especially ones featuring superheroes. He was set to play the role of Superman in the 90s, although he did finish up voicing the character in ‘Teen ‘Titans Go! To the Movies’ (2018). He has also voiced ‘Spider-Man Noir’ in Sony’s ‘Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse’ (2018), starred as Johnny Blaze, Ghost Rider in both ‘Ghostrider’ movies, and played ‘Big Daddy’ in the Superhero comedy ‘Kick Ass’ (2010). Cage has even given one of his sons the name Kal-El, which is the birth name of Superman.

Cage plays Port Authority Police Officer John McLoughlin, who was on rescue during the horrible events of 9/11, in the final film on our list of five. He begins a mission to lead the evacuation of one of the towers with a squad of police officers. A part of the structure collapsed as a result of the impact, trapping him and another officer underneath. They decide to stay alive for each other while attempting to summon assistance.

‘World Trade Centre’ has a cast list that includes Michael Peña (‘American Hustle’), Maria Bello (‘Prisoners’), Maggie Gyllenhaal (‘The Dark Knight’), Stephen Dorff (‘Public Enemies’), Jon Bernthal (‘King Richard’), Jay Hernandez (‘Suicide Squad’), Michael Shannon (‘Man of Steel’), and William Mapother (‘Lost’). Oliver Stones serves as its director.
