Must-Watch TV Shows and Movies of June 2022

June 2022 saw gripping comebacks, new releases of TV shows and amazing movies. From a teenage lesbian love story between a vampire and a vampire hunter to a series following a man on the run from the CIA, an origin story from one of the most beloved Pixar characters who said the catchphrase “To Infinity …and Beyond!”, and Marvel’s newest superhero – a sixteen-year-old Pakistani-American is introduced, among other exciting titles.

We’ve compiled a list of must-watch new series that premiered this month, TV shows that made a comeback and movies released in June 2022. Happy watching!

First Kill

In a fantasy twist to Romeo and Juliet, Netflix’s ‘First Kill’ is a teenage lesbian love story that follows Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook, ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’) a vampire, and Calliope (Imani Lewis, ‘Star’) – a monster hunter. Both protagonists must make their first kill in this series created by Victoria Schwab, based on Schwab’s short story of the same name. ‘First Kill’ has been executive produced by American Horror Story alum Emma Roberts, Karah Preiss, Felicia D. Henderson, and Schwab. 

The cast of this eight-episode series includes Elizabeth Mitchell (‘Lost’), Gracie Dzienny (‘Chasing Life’), Dominic Goodman (‘He’s All That’), Phillip Mullings Jr., Will Swenson (‘The Greatest Showman’), Aubin Wise (‘Atlanta’), Dylan McNamara, Jason R. Moore (‘The Punisher’), among others.

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Era

Man Vs Bee

‘Mr. Bean’ star Rowan Atkinson is back as Trevor Bingley, a homeless man, who is looking for work in Netflix’s ‘Man Vs Bee’. He is mistaken by a businesswoman for her new housesitter and finds himself at war with a bee while housesitting a luxurious mansion. The question is – who will win? What irreparable damage will be done in the process as Bingley tries to take care of the house while pursued by a mischievous bee? 

The series also features Jing Lusi (‘Crazy Rich Asians’), Claudie Blakley, Tom Basden (‘Piebs’), Julian Rhind-Tutt (‘Green Wing’), and Greg McHugh (‘Gary: Tank Commander’), among others.

Ms. Marvel

‘Ms. Marvel’ is a Disney+ series that introduces Kamala Khan. She is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American growing up in Jersey City who is a great student, an avid gamer, and a voracious fan-fiction scribe! Kamala has a special affinity for superheroes, particularly Captain Marvel. But she struggles to fit in at home and at school. This is until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to! 

Life is easier with superpowers, right? 19-year-old Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel. The cast also includes Aramis Knight (‘Into the Badlands’), Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah (‘To All the Boys: Always and Forever’), Zenobia Shroff (‘Little Zizou’), and more. The episodes of ‘Ms. Marvel’ have been directed by Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Baymax!

In a spin-off of ‘Big Hero 6’, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Baymax!” returns to the fantastical city of San Fransokyo. In this Disney+ series, the affable, inflatable, inimitable healthcare companion, Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit, ‘Big Hero 6 The Series’‘30 Rock’), sets out to do what he was programmed to do: help others. 

The voice actors on ‘Baymax!’ also include Ryan Potter (‘Titans’), Maya Rudolph (‘Bridesmaid’‘Big Mouth’), Emily Kuroda (‘Gilmore Girls’‘Kimi’), Lilimar, Zeno Robinson (‘Big City Greens’), and Jaboukie Young-White (‘C’mon, C’mon’), among others.

The Old Man

Dan Chase absconded from the CIA. He lives off the grid. When an assassin arrives and tries to take him out, the old operative learns that to ensure his future, he now must reconcile his past. The FBI’s Harold Harper is called on to hunt him down. This is because of his complicated past with the rogue fugitive. But Chase proves to be more difficult to apprehend than the authorities expected.

Subsequently, a highly trained special ops contractor is sent to pursue him as well. While on the run, Chase rents a room from Zoe McDonald. She draws on reserves she never knew she had. McDonald does this to survive the day when she learns the truth about her new tenant.

Jurassic World: Dominion

‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ is the third and final installment of the Jurassic World trilogy. At the end of ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ (2018), Dr. Ian Malcolm declared that the world had now entered a “Neo-Jurassic Age.” Dinosaurs now coexist with humans worldwide and hunt alongside them. Owen Grady continues to watch over and protect Maise from Biosyn Genetics as she is chased for her DNA. They are taken aback when Blue, Owen’s trained Velociraptor, unexpectedly shows up with an offspring.

Chris Pratt (‘The Tomorrow War’), Bryce Dallas Howard (‘Terminator Salvation’), Omar Sy (‘The Takedown’), and Isabella Sermon reprise their roles from the previous films. Actors Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and BD Wongreturn to play Dr.Ellie Sattler, Dr. Alan Grant, Ian Malcolm, and Dr. Henry Wu, respectively. Joining the cast are Mamoudou Athie (‘Underwater’), Scott Haze (‘Antlers’), Dichen Lachman (‘Severance’), and DeWanda Wise (‘The Harder They Fall’).

Filmmaker Colin Trevorrow served as the director for the third time in the film franchise. Oscar and Emmy-winning composer Michael Giacchino composed the music for the movie.

Lightyear

‘Lightyear’ is a spin-off movie of the popular Pixar film franchise ‘Toy Story’. In the original ‘Toy Story’ from 1995, Andy Davis receives a Buzz Lightyear action figure for his birthday. This film serves as the character Buzz Lightyear’s origin story. ‘Lightyear’ follows the legendary Space Ranger on a cosmic journey as he is stranded on a hostile planet. A bunch of eager recruits, his robot cat companion Sox, accompany him as they search for a way to return home. To flee from the villainous Emperor Zurg and his army of robots, they must learn to function as a team.

Screenwriter Angus MacLane marks his directorial debut with ‘Lightyear’. He also voices ‘Eric’ in the film. Chris Evans (‘Knives Out’) voices space ranger Buzz Lightyear. He is joined by a voice cast that includes Keke Palmer (‘Ice Age: Collision Course‘), Peter Sohn (‘Luca’), Taika Waititi (Voice and Motion Capture of ‘Korg’ in the MCU), and Bill Hader (‘The Angry Birds Movie’).

777 Charlie

‘777 Charlie’ is an emotional drama film about a labrador Charlie and his owner Dharma who embark on a life journey together as their bond becomes inseparable. Dharma is a stubborn and arrogant person who is unaware of life beyond his monotonous daily routine. When a Labrador visits him, his life changes drastically. He initially tries to get rid of the dog, but as time passes, their bonds deepen.

Indian Filmmaker Kiranraj K is the writer and director of the adventure comedy-drama ‘777 Charlie.’ This is his feature film debut. Musician Nobin Paul provided the score for the film. Actor and film producer Rakshit Shetty (‘Ulidavaru Kandanthe’) stars in the lead role. Bobby Simha, Danish Sait, Sangeetha Sringeri, and Raj B. Shetty comprise the supporting cast members. 

Elvis

‘Elvis’ is arguably one of 2022’s most anticipated movies. It follows Elvis’s musical career with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. It chronicles Elvis’s path from his early years to rock and roll stardom. The difficulties handling his newfound fame, encountering backlash for his dancing, and tragic incidents that took place during that time are all depicted in the film. Building a life for himself and his love Priscilla, he strives to never experience poverty again.

Austin Butler (‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’) plays Elvis Presley, Tom Hanks (‘News of the World’) plays Elvis’s manager Col. Tom Parker, and Olivia DeJonge (‘The Staircase’) takes on the role of Priscilla Presley.

Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann directed the film. B.B. King, Little Richard, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Snow, Arthur Crudup, Big Mama Thornton, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, to mention a few, are also depicted in the movie.

The Black Phone

A young schoolboy, Finney Shaw, is kidnapped by a vicious killer known as the Grabbler. He is imprisoned in a soundproof basement with nothing but a disconnected dialer phone. His sister, who experiences psychic dreams, and the authorities scramble to prevent him from becoming another victim. Finney sees hope when he starts to communicate with the killer’s prior victims through the disconnected phone.

Actors Madeleine McGraw (‘The Mandela Effect’), Jeremy Davies (‘The House That Jack Built’), James Ransone (‘It Chapter Two’), E. Roger Mitchell (‘American Woman’), Ethan Hawke (‘The Northman’), and Mason Thames (‘For All Mankind’) all appear in the movie.

American filmmaker Scott Derrickson serves as the film’s director, while Canadian composer Mark Korven worked on the film’s score. Scott Derrickson, Ethan Hawke, and James Ransone have also worked together on the horror film ‘Sinister’ (2012).

‘The Black Phone’ is an adaption of a story taken from author Joe Hill’s horror story collections novel ‘20th Century Ghosts’.

Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga

The villagers of Jhundao are heavily dependent on the monsoon for their crops and thus livelihood. They attempt to take advantage of a government initiative as a result of the failed monsoon and frequent wild animal attacks. The village’s leader, Gangaram, is on the hunt for a tiger to offer himself as the tiger’s next meal. If successful, the villagers can file a claim with the government for compensation.

The negative repercussions of urbanization, human-animal conflict over the forest area, and extreme poverty are subtly depicted in the movie. Srijit Mukherji is the writer and director of  ‘Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga’. Cast in the film is Pankaj Tripathi (’83’), Sayani Gupta (‘Pagglait’), and Neeraj Kabi (‘Sherni’).The film’s score was created by musician Shantanu Moitra.

Sherdil‘ is based on a true story that transpired in the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, located in the Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh, India, where locals are believed to have abandoned their old relatives for the tigers to feed on and then demand compensation from the Government.

The Man From Toronto

Taking a page from ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E’ fiction series is ‘The Man from Toronto’. On a trip away, Teddy Nilson shows up at the wrong cabin. He is misidentified as the man from Toronto, a hitman, and compelled to start an interrogation to extract information. When the FBI shows up, Teddy is forced to continue to be the man from Toronto. Teddy’s choices are limited when the real man from Toronto shows up and also forces him to continue to play him on an assignment.

Actor and comedian Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson (‘The Highwaymen’) play the main characters in the movie. They are joined by supporting cast members Jasmine Mathews (‘The Tomorrow War’), Kaley Cuoco (‘The Flight Attendant’), Ronnie Rowe (‘The Porter’), Kate Drummond (‘The Novice’), Lela Loren (‘Altered Carbon’) Golden Globe nominee Ellen Barkin and actor-singer Jencarlos Canela.

Australian screenwriter Patrick Hughes directed the action comedy film. Composer Ramin Djawadi produced the music for the film.
