Must-Watch TV Shows and Movies of July 2022

July 2022 had much to offer for movies/TV shows buffs and cinemagoers worldwide. A new slasher drama in the ‘Pretty Little Liars’ franchise, a Netflix original series following the seedy underworld behind the once-revered sport of Muay Thai, Jordan Peele casts his favorite actor Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya in yet another sci-fi thriller, Dwayne the Rock Johnson and Kevin Hart team up once more, this time in an animated superhero film, among other exciting titles.

We’ve compiled a list of must-watch new series that premiered this month, TV shows that made a comeback, and movies released in July 2022. Happy watching!

Hurts Like Hell 

Directed by Kittichai Wanprasert, Netflix’s ‘Hurts Like Hell’ is a Thai-language original series that follows the seedy underworld behind the once-revered sport of Muay Thai. This drama, inspired by real events, sees everything from illegal gambling to match-fixing.

Remarriage & Desires 

‘Remarriage & Desires’ is a South-Korean Netflix series focusing on an exclusive matchmaking agency that caters to the rich. Thanks to it, women strive to marry a desirable bachelor and into the highest echelon of society. In ‘Remarriage & Desires’, you will see a divorcee plot revenge against her ex-husband’s scheming mistress. The eight-episode series premiered on Netflix on July 15.

The Netflix series stars Lee Hyun-Wook (‘She Would Never Know’, ‘#Alive’), Jung Yoo-jin (‘Romance Is a Bonus Book’, ‘Snowdrop’), Kim Hee-sun (‘Tomorrow’, ‘Faith’), Cha Ji-Yeon (‘Taxi Driver’), and Park Won-hee (‘Nobody Knows’, ‘Memories of the Alhambra’), among others.

Keep Breathing 

Liv’s small private plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness in Netflix’s ‘Keep Breathing’. Being the lone survivor, she must battle with the elements and challenges that the wilderness throws her way – both an unforgiving cold and past personal traumas and demons to stay alive in the harsh environments. The cast of ‘Keep Breathing’ includes Melissa Barrera (‘Scream’‘In The Heights’), Jeff Wilbusch (‘Unorthodox’), Florencia Lozano (‘Life After You’), Juan Pablo Espinosa, and Austin Stowell (‘Whiplash’).

Black Bird 

In this Apple TV+ series inspired by actual events, Taron Egerton (‘Rocketman’), who plays the protagonist Jimmy Keene, begin a ten-year prison sentence in a minimum security prison. He cuts a deal with the FBI and gets an incredible offer to befriend a suspected serial killer in exchange for his freedom.

Keene must elicit a confession from suspected killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser, ‘Richard Jewell’‘I, Tonya’) to find the bodies of as many as fourteen women so that Jimmy can be freed. But completing this mission isn’t a piece of cake as it becomes the challenge of his lifetime. The cast of ‘Black Bird’ also includes Sepideh Moafi (‘The L Word: Generation Q’), Ray Liotta (‘GoodFellas’‘Field of Dreams’), and Greg Kinnear (‘As Good As It Gets (Mejor… impossible)’‘Little Miss Sunshine’) among others.

From the executive producers of ‘Big Little Lies’ and ‘Little Fires Everywhere’, the Apple TV+ series ‘Surface’ sees Sophia suffer a traumatic head injury believed to be a result of a suicide attempt. It leaves her with serious memory loss issues and so she embarks on a quest to piece her life back together. She enlists the help of her husband and friends to do this. Sofia begins questioning whether she is living the truth or not and soon realizes that the people who are helping her may not have her best interests in mind.

‘Surface’ has been directed by Sam Miller (‘I May Destory You’) and stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (‘Loki’, ‘Belle’), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (‘The Haunting of Hill House’, ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’), Ari Graynor, Stephan James (‘Race’, ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’,), Millie Brady (‘The Last Kingdom’), François Arnaud (‘The Borgias’, ‘Midnight, Texas’), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (‘Secrets & Lies’, ‘The Sea Beast’), among others.

The Rehearsal 

Nathan Fielder returns to television with a brand new show on HBO! The show is titled ‘The Rehearsal’ starring Fielder, who “explores the lengths one person will go to reduce the uncertainties of everyday life.” Nathan stars as the director of rehearsals. These rehearsals are elaborately staged scenarios re-creating parts of ordinary people’s lives. They are meant to help them prepare for a big moment in their lives.

A team of people who build the sets, a large number of actors, and many resources join forces to make ‘The Rehearsal’ a success. Their goal is to enable people to rehearse for these moments by giving them a chance to play them out. These moments are rehearsed in carefully crafted simulations of Fielder’s own design.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin—w

In the slasher drama ‘Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin’ two decades ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. In the present day, a group of disparate teen girls, NOT the Pretty Little Liars we know of but a brand-new set of Little Liars, are tormented by an unknown attacker in this fourth TV series in the popular ‘Pretty Little Liars’ franchise.

Paper Girls

A couple of hours after 1988 Halloween night, four 12-year-olds’ paper routes are disrupted. They unknowingly time travel to 2019. While searching for a way back home, they get trapped in a complicated conflict between members of two time-jumping factions at war. The paper girls who time traveled must come face-to-face with their adult selves.

Despite all the chaos, they must learn they must all learn to work together to save the world in this Amazon Prime Video series starring Sofia Rosinsky, Riley Lai Nelet, Ali Wong (‘Always Be My Maybe’, ‘Tuca & Bertie’, ‘Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey’), Camryn Jones, Fina Strazza, Nate Corddry (‘Harry’s Law’), and Adina Porter, among others.

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect

‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ is an Indian biographical drama film based on the life of Nambi Narayanan, a former scientist and aerospace engineer of the Indian Space Research Organization. Narayanan is followed throughout the story, from his days as a student at Princeton University to his work as a scientist. The film follows his alleged conspiracy, as well as physical and then emotional mistreatment against him during the investigations.

‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ is written and directed by Indian actor and filmmaker R. Madhavan. Indian actors Simran, Rajit Kapur, Ravi Raghavendra, Misha Ghoshal, Dinesh Prabhakar, Shah Rukh Khan, Suriya, Ron Donachie, Phyllis Logan, and Vincenzo Ricotta complete the cast.

The film is based on the life of Indian aerospace engineer Nambi Narayanan who was apprehended as part of an espionage investigation in 1994. In March 2019, he received the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honor.

DC League of Super Pets

Actors Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson’s undeniable on and off-screen chemistry is on display once again in the animated film ‘DC League of Super-Pets.’ However, this time the pair will be off-screen, lending their voices to their animated characters. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson voices Krypto, Superman’s faithful and superpowered labrador. When the supervillain Lex Luthor abducts Superman, Krypto enlists the assistance of a team of superpowered shelter animals.

He worked on the script alongside screenwriter John Whittington. The duo has also worked together on ‘The Lego Batman Movie‘ (2017) and ‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’ (2018).

The voice cast in the film also includes Kate McKinnon (‘The Bubble’), John Krasinski (‘A Quiet Place’), Keanu Reeves (‘The Matrix’), Vanessa Bayer (‘I Love That for You’), Natasha Lyonne (‘Russian Doll’), Diego Luna (‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’), Thomas Middleditch (‘Silicon Valley’), Ben Schwartz (‘Sonic the Hedgehog’), Olivia Wilde (‘Cowboys & Aliens’), Marc Maron (‘The Bad Guys’), TV host Jameela Jamil and musician Daveed Diggs.

The Gray Man

Film producers Joe and Anthony Russo have casted Captain America actor Chris Evans in the role of an antagonist in ‘The Gray Man.’

The Gray Men is an undercover CIA organization that operates under the radar. In exchange for their prison sentences, they are recruited to work for the CIA. Agent Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling) is on the run from the CIA after getting his hands on agency secrets. He is pursued by the ruthless Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), who will hesitate at nothing to eliminate him.

The film is an adaption of writer Mark Greaney’s works. Ryan Gosling (‘Blade Runner 2049’), Ana de Armas (‘Deep Water’), Regé-Jean Page (‘Bridgerton’), Jessica Henwick (‘The Matrix Resurrections‘), Julia Butters (‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’), Billy Bob Thornton (‘Faster’), Alfre Woodard (’12 Years a Slave’), Callan Mulvey (‘Outlaw King’) and Indian film director and lyricist Dhanush round out the cast. English composer Henry Jackman composed the film’s original score, which is not his first work with the Russo Brothers.

A sequel and spin-off film have already been announced by Netflix.

A must-watch for gamers and fans of esports competitions is ‘1UP’. Written by screenwriter Julia Yorks (‘The Adventures of Puss in Boots’), the esports comedy film follows Valerie, who has earned a scholarship owing to her exceptional gaming talents. She also makes the Betas, Barrett University’s male-dominated video gaming squad, and is dismissed. Valerie then assembles a competitive all-girl team aiming to defeat the Betas and participate in the National Esports championships.

The cast of ‘1Up’ includes Roby Rose (‘The Meg’), Paris Berelc (‘Tall Girl’),  Taylor Zakhar Perez (‘The Kissing Booth 2’), Hari Nef (‘Assassination Nation’), Nicholas Coombe (‘The Wilds’), and Aviva Mongillo (‘Long Shot’). Filmmaker Kyle Newman directed the film with music by composer Jessica Rose Weiss.

Kyle Newman shared via Instagram that he worked on the movie for two years and that it was a “love letter to gaming”. He went on to praise Jessica Rose Weiss’s music for bringing “Oxygen” into the movie.

Not Okay

Danni Sanders is an aspiring writer with no friends and a small social media presence. Using her photo editing skills, she pretends to be on vacation in Paris to acquire more followers on her social media. When a series of terrorist strikes occur in Paris, she is assumed to be a survivor of one of them. Danni seemingly makes the most of this situation, but the lies mount up and the internet sleuths catch on to her.

Quinn Shephard wrote and directed ‘Not Okay.’  Zoey Deutch (‘The Outfit’) plays Danni Sanders in this satirical comedy-drama. Also in the film is actors Dylan O’Brien (‘Love and Monsters’), Embeth Davidtz (‘Old’), Karan Soni (‘Deadpool’), Brennan Brown (‘The Wolf Hour’), Nadia Alexander (‘Blame’), and comedian Negin Farsad. The music in the film was composed by singer-songwriter Pierre-Philippe Côté.

Comedian, actor, and film director Jordan Peel has established himself as a mainstay in horror/thriller films with deeper meanings and larger themes. After directing ‘Get Out’ (2017) and ‘US’ (2019), and working as a producer on ‘Candyman’ (2020), he returns as a director with a horror/science fiction film ‘Nope’.

As seen in the trailer, the Haywood family is desperately trying to keep the family ranch and business afloat. Following their father’s terrible death, siblings Otis and Emerald speculate that it was caused by a mysterious entity in the clouds. They decide to film this alien being in order to raise finances to continue their family business. At the same time, the owner of Jupiter’s Claim, a neighboring amusement park, attempts to benefit from the unexplained, supernatural activity.

Cast in the film are Daniel Kaluuya (‘Judas and the Black Messiah’), Keke Palmer (‘Lightyear’), Steven Yeun (‘The Walking Dead’), Michael Wincott (‘ Hitchcock’), Brandon Perea (‘The OA’), Barbie Ferreira (‘Euphoria’), Wrenn Schmidt (‘I Saw the Light’), and Keith David (’21 Bridges’). The film’s score is written by composer Michael Abels. He also composed the music for the movie ‘Get Out’ (2017) and ‘US’ (2019).

Since the release of the trailer, cinemagoers and movie observers have speculated that the film’s title, NOPE, is an acronym for Not On Planet Earth.
