Must-Watch TV Shows and Movies of August 2022

Movie buffs, cinema-goers, and TV show fanatics welcomed August, packed with blockbuster releases, flicks with an ensemble cast, and prequel movies. We learn what happened to Esther at the Saarne Institute. The Predator series gets a new backstory. A psychological thriller that centers on a therapist played by Steve Carell being held prisoner by a patient who is a serial killer, and more!

The Sandman

Step into the world of dark fantasy! Based on the DC Comic Series written by Neil Gaiman, ‘The Sandman’ is an eleven-episode series that premiered on Netflix on August 5. It follows the titular character The Sandman, AKA Dream. When we sleep, we have dreams in a world called The Dreaming, these dreams are controlled by the cosmic being Dream. However, he is suddenly captured.

This leads to changes both in The Dreaming and the waking worlds; therefore, he must fix the chaos and disorder. To do this, Dream must go on a journey. He has to now fix the mistakes he has made. The cast of ‘The Sandman’ includes Tom Sturridge, Jenna Coleman (‘Doctor Who’), Gwendoline Christie (‘Game of Thrones’), Boyd Holbrook (‘Narcos’‘Logan’), and Kirby Howell-Baptiste (‘The Good Place’).

A League of Their Own

An Amazon Prime Video adaptation of the 1992 film ‘A League of Their Own’, this series is set in 1943. It centers on the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson, ‘Disenchantment’‘The Mitchells vs. the Machines’) travels to Chicago to try out for the women’s professional baseball team. Other women who wish to play pro baseball just like her are also present there. Shaw uses this opportunity to make connections. 

Among the women who come to the tryouts is a Rockford local named Max Chapman (Chanté Adams, ‘A Journal for Jordan’‘Roxanne Roxanne’). Although she is turned down from selections, Chapman is determined to make her dreams come true. She then takes a new route towards her goal. The comedy-drama series also stars Gbemisola Ikumelo as Max’s supportive best friend, Greta Gill (‘The Good Place’), Kelly McCormack, Roberta Colindrez, Molly Ephraim (‘Last Man Standing’), Nick Offerman (‘Parks and Recreation’), and Melanie Field, among others.

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law

From blockbuster films to Disney+ series and shorts, Marvel has been releasing many titles for its fans to enjoy. Its latest offering is ‘She-Hulk: Attorney At Law’, which follows Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany, ‘Orphan Black’‘Parks and Recreation’), an attorney. She specializes in legal cases involving superhumans. Jennifer must also navigate the complicated life of a single, 30-something.

That’s not all, she also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk whom we will see alongside the “big guy” Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk in the show. The cast of ‘She-Hulk: Attorney At Law’ also includes ‘The Good Place’ star Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, Tim Roth (‘The Incredible Hulk’), Renée Elise Goldsberry (‘Hamilton’‘Altered Carbon’), Josh Segarra, ‘Daredevil’ star Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, and Benedict Wong as Wong.

House of the Dragon

‘House of the Dragon’ is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. It is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” and is a prequel to one of the most popular HBO shows ‘Game of Thrones’. The ten-episode series tells the story of House Targaryen, chronicling the history of Daenerys Targaryen’s royal family, and traces the events leading up to the civil war. The show’s cast includes Milly Alcock, Matt Smith (‘Doctor Who’‘The Crown’), Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke (‘Bates Motel’), Patrick Considin, and Graham McTavish (‘Outlander’‘The Hobbit’), among others.

This Fool

‘This Fool’ is Hulu’s comedy series following thirty-year-old Julio Lopez. In this show, you’ll see the working class South Central Los Angeles, which is where Julio lives at home. He keeps running away from his problems instead of just facing them (which isn’t a piece of cake, right?) The ‘Mindhunter’ star Jonathan Groff is an executive producer on the series, which sees Julio as an employee at a gang rehabilitation non-profit. Chris Estrada, Pat Bishop, Frankie Quinones, Michelle Ortiz, Julia Vera, and Michael Imperioli star in the show.

The Patient

‘The Office’ star Steve Carell takes on the role of a therapist called Alan Strauss, who is held prisoner by a patient. Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson, ‘Ex Machina’), the patient, is a serial killer who wants Alan to “curb his homicidal urges.” FX’s ‘The Patient’ also stars Andrew Leeds, David Alan Grier (‘In Living Color’), Laura Niemi, and Linda Emond.

Partner Track

‘Teen Wolf’ star Arden Cho is a young and ambitious lawyer at a New York City law firm in Netflix’s ‘Partner Track’. Her name is Ingrid Yun and she battles her way in this competitive and cut-throat world to make a partner at a prestigious law firm. As a Chinese American, she could be the first minority woman to do so. Friendship, banter, love triangle, drama at work and in relationships, find it all in ‘Partner Track’. The show also stars Dominic Sherwood (‘Shadowhunters’), Rob Heaps (‘Good Girls’), Bradley Gibson (‘Glee’‘The Flight Attendant’), Alexandra Turshen, Matthew Rauch, and Roby Attal.

Bullet Train 

On a Japanese high-speed bullet train, ‘Ladybug,’ a skilled former assassin, is assigned to retrieve a briefcase and flee. Ladybug refuses his handler’s request to carry a weapon since he is a changed individual who has decided to give up killing. On this train, there are several assassins, each with their own objective. They are all related in ways they are unaware of.

Bullet Trains features an ensemble cast of Brad Pitt (‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’), Brian Tyree Henry (‘The Woman in the Window’), Hiroyuki Sanada (‘Mortal Kombat’), Andrew Koji (‘Snake Eyes’), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (‘The King’s Man’), Joey King (‘The Princess’), Michael Shannon (‘Nocturnal Animals’), Sandra Bullock (‘The Unforgivable’), Zazie Beetz (‘Seberg’), Logan Lerman (‘Noah), Masi Oka (‘The Meg’) and rapper Bad Bunny. There are also a few cameo appearances in the film, which we will not spoil here.

Bullet Train is based on a novel of the same name by writer Kōtarō Isaka’. The film is directed by David Leitch, who also directed ‘Atomic Blonde’ and ‘Deadpool 2’. Music producer Dominic Lewis composed the score for the movie. The events of the film take place on the Tokaido Shinkansen, a Japanese high-speed bullet train rail network that first opened in 1964.


Badrunissa is in an abusive relationship with her husband Hamza, but she is a devoted wife, who is determined to make him change his ways. When the violence becomes too much for Badrunissa, she and her mother devise a plan to teach him a lesson.

Alia Bhat (‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’), Shefali Shah (‘Jalsa’), and Vijay Varma (‘Gully Boy’) play the three main characters in the film. Music producer and composer Prashant Pillai created the music score. ‘Darlings’ is the feature film debut of writer/director Jasmeet K. Reen.

Thirteen Lives

‘Thirteen Lives’ is a survival drama film based on the events of the 2018 cave rescue effort in Thailand’s Tham Luang Nang Non cave. After their football training session, thirteen members of the Wild Boars football team, including their coach, decide to explore the cave. A severe rain soon falls, flooding the cave tunnel system, obstructing their escape, and trapping them deep underground. Rescue attempts began amid rising water levels and downpours.

Filmmaker Ron Howard sits on the director’s chair for ‘Thirteen Lives’. Actors Viggo Mortensen (‘Green Book’) and Colin Farrell  (‘The Gentlemen’) play real-life cave divers Richard Stanton and John Volanthen, respectively. Richard Harris, an anesthesiologist and cave diver, is played by Joel Edgerton (‘The King’). Divers Richard Stanton and Jason Mallinson also served as technical advisors on set. Music composer and orchestrator Benjamin Wallfisch created the score of the film.

Orphan: First Kill 

‘Orphan: First Kill’ is a prequel film to the 2009 film ‘Orphan’. This movie serves as a backstory to Esther’s life before her adoption into the Coleman family. Here, she is welcomed into the Albright family under the guise of their missing daughter. Unable to completely imbibe the Albright child’s behavior, the mother and the investigator on the case become suspicious of her and attempt to discover exactly who she really is.

Isabelle Fuhrman returns to reprise her role as Esther Albright, which she first played in 2009. Julia Stiles (‘The Bourne Series’), Rossif Sutherland (‘The Retreat’), and Matthew Finlan (‘Brazen’) portray the Albright family. 

Horror film maestro William Brent Bell directed the film. Film composer and frontman of The Juliana Theory, Brett Detar, delivered the music score. The two have previously collaborated on films horror films Separation (2021), ‘Brahms: The Boy II’ (2020), ‘WER’ (2014), and The Devil Inside’ (2012).

Did You Know?
Despite the availability of advanced de-aging technologies, the film relies on old-fashioned filming tactics of lighting, editing, and certain camera positions to depict a young Esther. Furhman’s body doubles, played by Kennedy Rose Irwin and Sadie Lee, supported the production.

‘Prey’ is a prequel film to the ‘Predator Franchise‘. This film takes place in the Northern Great Plains of North America in 1719. Naru, the protagonist, wishes to become a hunter for her tribe. She witnesses unusual thunder and cloud activity in the sky and interprets it as a sign for her to prove she can hunt. While on a mission, Naru discovers there is a dangerous creature in the woods and she must hunt it down to protect her tribe.

At the time of writing ‘Prey’ has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.2/10 on IMDB. Responsible for resurrecting the franchise with its prequel installment is director Dan Trachtenberg. He worked on the story along with writer and producer Patrick Aison. Music producer and composer Sarah Schachner produced the film score. 

Starring in the film are actors Amber Midthunder (‘Roswell, New Mexico’), Michelle Thrush (‘Arctic Air’), Julian Black Antelope (‘Don’t Say Its Name’), and musician Dakota Beavers. Actor Dane DiLiegro takes on the role of the predator.

Bodies Bodies Bodies

Bee and her girlfriend Sophie take a trip to a remote mansion for a party. While avoiding a hurricane at this secluded location, the gang spends their time drinking, consuming drugs, dancing, and having a great time. As the party goes on, they decide to play ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies,’ a murder mystery game. Things take a turn for the worst when the power goes out, and the game becomes a reality as dead bodies begin to pile up. The group turns on each other in an attempt to figure out who the killer is.

Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova continues her streak of impressive performances in film since her breakthrough role in the mockumentary film ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm‘. In ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies,’ she is cast alongside Amandla Stenberg (‘The Darkest Minds’), Myha’la Herrold (‘Industry’), Rachel Sennott (‘Shiva Baby’), Chase Sui Wonders (‘Generation’), Lee Pace (‘Foundation’), and comedian and actor Pete Davidson.


Teenager Sam Greenfield is convinced that she has the worst luck and all misfortune befalls her. Her life takes a favorable turn when she finds a lucky penny that improves her fortunes. Unfortunately, she loses it by flushing it into the toilet. She tells her story to a black cat, who was responsible for her discovering the penny in the first place. Her adventure begins when she follows him into the Land of Luck, hoping to find another penny and restore good luck to the world.

Singer and Grammy award winner Eva Noblezada (‘Yellow Rose’) voices Sam Greenfield while Simon Pegg (‘Misson Impossible Series’) voices Bob the black cat. Jane Fonda (‘Book Club’), Whoopi Goldberg (‘Star Trek: Picard’), Colin O’Donoghue (‘The Rite’), Lil Rel Howery (‘Get Out’), voice actress Kari Wahlgrenand comedian and DJ Flula Borg round off the voice cast.

‘Luck’ is directed by screenwriter and dancer-choreographer Peggy Holmes, with the music score provided by film and television composer John Debney.
