Two of the most exciting names in drum & bass from England and Belgium have teamed up for four ragged cuts on Kasra’s Critical Music.
Critical Music has always been at the forefront of promoting styles of drum & bass that are fresh and forward-thinking. Thanks to the label head honcho, Kasra’s comfort with giving space to experiment on his imprint, Critical Music’s catalog has been pivotal in the expansion of modern styles of DnB we’ve witnessed over the years.
This year alone, Critical Music has released cross genre EPs from IMANU, gyrofield, Enei, Buunshin, YAANO, along with their mammoth 22-track ’20 Years Of Underground Sonics’ compilation. Taking their love for cutting-edge bass music further, Critical Music has now brought together two names that have been at the forefront of mind-bending and futuristic drum & bass on the ‘Heart & Soul’ EP.
Foreign Concept is a name that is synonymous with distinctive and forward-thinking drum & bass. After a few releases on Samurai Music, SGN:LTD, Ingredients Records, Foreign Concept moved to Critical Music in 2011, where he has released a majority of his music featuring his experimental & infectious blends.
Collaborating with Foreign Concept on the ‘Heart & Soul’ EP is Belgian extraordinaire Phase, who sees himself on top of the food chain of outstanding DnB talents coming out of Belgium. Making his debut two years after Foreign Concept in 2013, Phase has had releases on labels like Fokuz Recordings, Vandal Records, Warm Communications, and Dispatch Recordings, with his latest album coming on the legendary Metalheadz.
Bringing their meticulously crafted brand of drum & bass, Foreign Concept and Phase kick-start the ‘Heart & Soul’ EP with Magugu‘s powerful vocals on ‘Shut It Up’. Rolling and industrious with rattling bass stabs, watch this tune take over DJ sets in the coming months. Next in line is the title track which is a testament to the colossal technical prowess of the pair, and features bongos and subtle dubwise aesthetics.
The title track is followed by the haunting atmospherics on ‘Witch Groove’, an intense low-end roller with compact bass grooves that maintain the deep web of tension throughout the tune. Foreign Concept and Phase end the EP with ‘Tuff Times’, an immersive deep-stepper that features the pair’s love for no-nonsense dancefloor drum & bass music. An absolute belter of an EP!
