5 Artists Who Were Discovered on YouTube

From comedy sketches, makeup tutorials, dance tutorials, music videos, recipes, gaming and tech videos, reviews, and much more, the video-sharing platform YouTube has offered a lot of entertainment. Many YouTubers have shot to fame because of their content on the platform, and some of them have now even appeared in television series, web series, and movies.

A number of people upload cover songs on YouTube, and others post their original songs on it. Some of the chart-topping and successful artists, whom we’ve seen at award shows, have also been discovered on YouTube. We look at five artists who were discovered on YouTube –

Charlie Puth

Although most of us know of Charlie Puth because of his feature on the song ‘See You Again’ with Wiz Khalifa for the OST of ‘Fast & Furious 7’, his music career didn’t begin there. He used to post cover songs on YouTube. This included Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’, performed with Emily Luther. The cover went viral and both Puth and Luther were invited to perform on Ellen DeGeneres’ show.

Charlie was then signed to Atlantic Records, which boasts artists like Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, and Janelle Monáe on their roster. His debut single ‘Marvin Gaye’ with Meghan Trainor came in 2015 and was a hit. Then came the chart-topper ‘See You Again’ on which Puth was featured alongside rapper Wiz Khalifa. It stood in the top position of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 12 weeks!

So far, the four-time Grammy-nominated singer has rolled out two albums – ‘Nine Track Mind’ and ‘Voicenotes’. He has worked with the likes of Selena Gomez, Boys II Men, Kehlani, and most recently, BTS’ Jungkook on ‘Left and Right’. His other hits include ‘Attention’, ‘One Call Away’, ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’, and ‘How Long’. Last week, Charlie dropped his latest single, ‘I Don’t Think That I Like Her’.

Tori Kelly

Famed artist Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, discovered Tori Kelly on YouTube, where she posted videos of herself singing. The singer also auditioned for the ‘American Idol’ but she faced rejection. However, YouTube opened another door for her in the music industry. She is now a Grammy-winning artist who has worked with various artists such as Kirk Franklin, Ed Sheeran, Big Sean, JoJo, ILLENIUM, and Justin Bieber.

Victoria Loren Kelly, who is popularly known as Tori Kelly, has also appeared on the soundtracks for ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas’, and ‘Blade Runner Black Lotus’. The singer voiced the character of Meena, playing a lead role in the 2016 film ‘Sing’ and its sequel ‘Sing 2’, and also recorded songs for them. Tori dropped a Christmas album last year titled ‘A Tori Kelly Christmas’. She has rolled out three other albums in her career so far.

Her debut album was ‘Unbreakable Smile’ featuring hits like ‘Nobody Love’, and ‘Should’ve Been Us’ while ‘Hiding Place’, her Grammy-winning sophomore album, came in 2018. Tori shared her third album ‘Inspired by True Events’ in 2019.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd has offered us many hits in his career, but he first began posting them on YouTube anonymously. It included ‘What You Need’, ‘The Morning’ and ‘Loft Music’. After it caught the attention of fellow Canadian star Drake and media outlets, Abel The Weeknd founded XO with La Mar Taylor, Wassim Slaiby, and Amir Esmailian. He then signed with a major label.

He scored a smash hit with his single ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ off his 2016 album ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’. It also featured his ‘The Hills’ and ‘Earned It’. The latter was dropped as the lead single for the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ OST. There was no stopping him after ‘The Hill’ and ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His next album, ‘Starboy’ in 2016, spawned the chart-topping hit ‘Starboy’ and ‘I Feel It Coming’ featuring Daft Punk, which peaked at number 4.

He has worked with Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar, and Ariana Grande on a remix for ‘Save Your Tears’, and Swedish House Mafia for ‘Moth To A Flame’, among others. He also appears on the OST of Marvel Studios’ 2018 film ‘Black Panther’ along with Kendrick Lamar on the track ‘Pray For Me’. ‘Blinding Lights’, ‘Call Out My Name’, and ‘Heartless’ are some of his biggest hits.

Alessia Cara

At age thirteen, Alessia Cara created a YouTube channel. She then began uploading cover songs to it, one of them being the rock band The Neighborhood’s hit song ‘Sweater Weather’. She also covered songs by Queen Bey, Sam Smith, and Amy Winehouse. Soon, a music recording company reached out to her.

Next up for the star was a songwriting session through which her song ‘Here’ was born. It became her critically acclaimed breakthrough hit, eventually winning her first Grammy award in 2018 for Best New Artist.

The singer has collaborated with Zedd on their Grammy-nominated hit ‘Stay’, Alec Benjamin for ‘Let Me Down Slowly’, and Troye Sivan for a ‘WILD’ remix. Cara has also worked with rapper Logic and Khalid on “1-800-273-8255’, which earned two Grammy nominations. Alessia also appears on original soundtracks such as ‘Moana’‘The Get Down’‘The Willoughbys’‘PAW Patrol: The Movie’, and ‘Blade Runner Black Lotus’. Her biggest hits include ‘Scars To Your Beautiful’, ‘Out of Love’, and ‘Growing Pains’.

Justin Bieber

Today, Justin Bieber is a globally known name. However, he was not always in the limelight. The ‘Peaches’ hitmaker performed on the street as a teenager, and his mother posted videos of him singing on YouTube. These videos soon made their way to Scooter Braun. There was no escaping stardom once he had caught the attention of Braun. He released his debut single ‘One Time’ after meeting Usher and being signed to RBMG. This record label was founded by Usher and Scooter Braun.

They rolled out hits after hits. ‘One Less Lonely Girl’, ‘Baby’, and ‘Never Let You Go’ were all popular songs by the singer. The track ‘Mistletoe’ from his 2011 album ‘Under The Mistletoe’ is heard EVERY Christmas season. Bieber has worked with Sean Kingston, Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott, Skrillex, Daniel Caesar, and many others in his musical career.

The singer is known to have hits every other year. He has racked up a total of twenty-two Grammy nominations until now. However, Justin has taken only two of them home. His first Grammy win came in 2015 for ‘Where Are Ü Now’ with Diplo and Skrillex for Best Dance Recording. He has had a number of documentaries, the latest one being ‘Justin Bieber: Our World’. Last month, he dropped ‘Beautiful Love’ as part of his collaboration with Free Fire, the battle royale game, which was launched in 2017.
