Christina Aguilera’s Updates ‘Beautiful’ Video, Tackles Social Media’s Effects on Kids and Teens
Released initially in 2002, Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’ impacted a whole generation of listeners with its poignant lyrics and music video. She has now revamped the track and released a new video for the track’s 20th anniversary and World Mental Health Day.
The updated music video exhibits kids and teenagers tackling the onslaught of social media, plastic surgery, depression, bullying, sexuality and gender acceptance, and body dysmorphia. The second half of the video then follows the children breaking free of their phones, running and playing together in an open field.
“In the last 20 years since Stripped was released, social media has transformed our relationship with our bodies, and in turn, our mental health,” reads a text concluding the video as a mobile phone is seen bleeding in the background. “Research suggests that time spent on social networking sites is associated with body image issues, self-harm, and disordered eating in children and teens. This needs to change.”
“(Beautiful) still carries an important message to remember our core values outside of what’s being fed to us…to find a sense of balance and accepting ourselves for who we are,” wrote Aguilera in an Instagram post.
