2022 American Music Awards – Highlights & Recap

The 2022 American Music Awards, hosted by Wayne Brady, were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. It was an incredible night for Taylor Swift, who swept the 2022 AMAs by winning the six awards she was nominated for, including ‘Artist of the Year’. “This album is a rerecorded album and I cannot tell you how much my rerecorded albums mean to me but I never expected or assumed that they would mean anything you,” she said while accepting the AMA for ‘Favorite Pop Album’ for ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’. “I can’t thank you enough for caring about this album that I am so proud of.”

With her six wins today, she is now a forty-time AMA winner. Taylor Swift is the most-awarded artist in AMAs history and also has the most ‘Artist of the Year’ and ‘Favorite Rop/Rock Female Artist’ American Music Awards wins under her belt.

P!nk Opened the 2022 AMAs

P!nk took the AMAs stage to open the 50th American Music Awards ceremony with her latest single, ‘Never Gonna Not Dance Again’. She transformed the stage into P!nk’s Rink and delivered a fantastic performance while rollerskating along with a large number of dancers.

Dove Cameron is the New Artist of the Year at the 2022 AMAs

Emmy-winner Sheryl Lee Ralph presented the award for the ‘New Artist of the Year’. Dove Cameron, who won the award, dedicated it to the queer community and thanked them for it. “I want to start by saying that every award that I ever win will always be first and foremost dedicated to the queer community at large. You guys have carved out such a space for me to be myself and to write music about it,” Cameron began. “I’ve never felt safer or more loved and more supported.”

She reminded the audience and viewers about the importance of queer visibility and the queer community. Following the tragedy at Club Q in Colorado Springs, where a 22-year-old gunman opened fire, killing five people and injuring at least 25, the ‘Boyfriend’ singer said: “I want to direct your attention to organizations like GLAAD and The Trevor Project for what you can do right now. I want to remind you that you are made absolutely right, and you are so loved and so held. I want to thank you for supporting me.”

Bebe Rexha took the 2022 AMAs Stage to Perform ‘I’m Good (Blue)’

Bebe Rexha took the 2022 AMAs stage to perform her latest collab with David Guetta ‘I’m Good (Blue)’. Although the EDM star Guetta was not present at the 50th American Music Awards, Bebe Rexha delivered an energy-packed performance. Both Rexha and Guetta opened the 2022 MTV EMAs last week in Düsseldorf. Their song was released in August this year and has amassed over 373 million streams on Spotify so far.

Anitta made her AMAs debut with ‘Envolver’, and was later joined on stage by Missy Elliott for ‘Lobby’. She also picked up an award for favorite female Latin artist, beating out her fellow nominees Becky G, KAROL G, ROSALÍA, and Kali Uchis, and shouted out her fellow nominees, saying: “There are no winners if there are no other people running this path with us.”

“You guys are amazing. Without you guys and my whole country Brazil, I wouldn’t be here today. It’s the first time a Brazilian’s here winning!” she added. “I want to say thank you for my team and my family and thank you for myself [because]I work so hard, too.”

The 2022 AMAs Host Wayne Brady Pays Tribute to Late Rapper Takeoff

The Migos rapper Takeoff passed away after being fatally shot on November 1 this year. The host for the evening, Wayne Brady, in a touching tribute to Takeoff, said: “We recently lost Kirsnick Khari Ball, better known as Takeoff, one-third of the groundbreaking hip-hop group Migos.”

“On behalf of all of us that love hip-hop all around the world, we thank you, Takeoff, for your artistry, and tonight, we honor your memory.”

“We have to stop this senseless and terrible gun violence,” he added. “Just yesterday, there was a mass shooting in Colorado Springs and our hearts go out to all of the victims’ families. That’s from the show,” Brady said. He sent his love to all the victims and the families of the mass shooting at the gay nightclub saying: “Personally, I want to say I love you all and my heart is with you and God bless you.”

Taylor Swift is Named Artist of the Year at the 2022 American Music Awards

Taylor Swift swept the 2022 AMAs, taking home all six awards she was nominated for. They are – Artist of the Year, Favorite Music Video, Favorite Pop Album, Favorite Female Pop Artist, Favorite Female Country Artist, and Favorite Country Album. “You know in the past few years, I have released more music than I did in the entire decade preceding that and I really feel that’s down to the fact that you, the fans, made it clear that you wanted to hear lots of music that I would make,” Taylor Swift began. “You encouraged me.”

“I found that the more music I made and the more music that I put out, the happier I was, the more I kept that channel open and just kept creating, kept making things, and the more that happened, the more you guys were like yay, keep doing it, and the happier I was,” she added. “So I have the fans to thank, essentially, for my happiness, and I love you more than I can say.”

P!nk’s Tribute to Olivia Newton-John

P!nk performed ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ at the 2022 American Music Awards in honor of the late star Olivia Newton-John. The song was originally performed by Olivia Newton-John for the 1978 film ‘Grease’ starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The singer and actress, Olivia, died of breast cancer in August this year. P!nk wore a sparkly gown with feathers for the performance, while a screen behind her displayed images of Olivia Newton-John.

Lionel Richie is Honored With the Icon Award at the 2022 AMAs

Lionel Richie was honored with the Icon Award at the 2022 American Music Awards, which was presented to him by Smokey Robinson. “He’s had a solo career second to none… Simply put, there have been few careers that have had as much diversity as Lionel Richie,” said Robinson. The seventeen-time AMA winner said: “What I want to say and take this time to do is to talk to the young superstars. God has given you a light. That light is special. That light is only given to a few. When you hear the word ‘hip,’ it means today. When you hear the word ‘inspiring,’ it means forever,” while accepting the honor. 

“He’s not trying to tell you that your car looks great, your clothes look great. He/she/mother/God is trying to tell you that you are chosen to inspire. Take this opportunity. That light is on you. Inspire.” 

Stevie Wonder and Charlie Puth Perform Lionel Richie’s Biggest Hits

After Lionel Richie received his Icon Award, the iconic Stevie Wonder took the AMAs stage with Charlie Puth to perform Richie’s biggest hits ‘Three Times a Lady’, ‘Easy’, ‘Brick House’, ‘Say You, Say Me’, ‘Jesus Is Love’, and ‘All Night Long (All Night)’ on the piano. “This is a great night because we’re here to honor a great man,” Wonder said. They were then joined by Melissa Etheridge, Smokey Robinson, Yola, Muni Long, Jimmie Allen, Dustin Lynch, and Ari Lennox to sing ‘We Are The World’. Eventually, Richie too made his way to the stage to perform with everyone.
