From the award-winning label’s final release of 2022, we are premiering Trophy’s crunching halftime number ‘Wannabe’ from his debut EP on Unchained Asia.
The Unchained story is quite a fascinating one. Being arguably the only label pushing varied forms of bass music, Unchained Asia has carefully started making its name as one of the most forward thinking imprints in bass music. Founded in 2018 by Daniel Power and Lyndon Jarr, Unchained has been firm on its ethos of educating, promoting, and disseminating progressive bass music in its region.
Based in both Shenzhen, China and Hong Kong, Unchained Asia’s name is not just synonymous with releasing music. Their wings extend to bringing the wider scene together right from grassroot level artists to the most respected names in bass music for their signature events in the cities they operate in. The events are also followed up by supporting local artists through activities such as producer mentoring, workshops, and masterclasses called “BiT Therapy.”
After closing 2021 with Zed Bias, one of the finest purveyors of the UK underground, Unchained brought talents like Lakeway, DJ Madd, HØST, and Leo Cap in 2022. These names were complimented by a giant various artists album to mark the label’s yearly ritual, which takes inspiration from the Chinese Zodiac calendar.
After a consistent run of releases, the label went through a period of a brief hiatus, the label has made a return for its final release of the year with Leeds-based producer, Josh Ainge aka TROPHY. According to the head honchos at Unchained, the ‘Preach EP’ will also give us a glimpse of the sonic direction the label intends to take us on heading into 2023.
Hovering around the drum & bass, jungle, and footwork terrains, TROPHY has delivered a thumping four-track piece of work runs all the way from the melodic sublime in to dusty half-time funk and finally closing it with hard footwork-esque bangers. From the producer’s debut EP on Unchained, we are premiering ‘Wannabe’ – a slow-burning halftime bulldozer that is laced with metallic percussions.
After a solid spate of self-releases under his belt, TROPHY is preparing himself for the leveling up stage of his career as a musician; and this EP is just the beginning.
