As part of one of ‘Te Whanganui-a-Tara’s premier drag shows,’ a bevy of drag kings will take over the stage at Peacocking from 9 PM onwards! Donned in their rhinestoned and glitzy outfits, the kings guarantee a night to remember – one full of antics, glamour and, of course, opulence. Joining Peacocking for the forthcoming showcase are MC and Drag & Cabaret event producer Willy SmacknTush; Mx Capital Drag’s 2022 Mx Congeniality & Runner Up Eddie D’amore; multi-award winning drag king Homer Neurotic; MC and entertainer Hanz Hehim; Mx Capital Drag finalist Amoeba Geezer; drag performer Frida People; and burlesque dancer and drag king Robin Yablind.

Drag artist and show producer Amy Thurst, the brains behind Amy Thurst Productions, talked to us about their intention behind planning Peacocking and the line-up of drag kings chosen for the performance. “The show is a platform to showcase drag kings! Drag kings are often marginalised in a very drag queen heavy world, even though drag is for everyone,” said Amy. “The kings I chose are people close to my heart and people that are very talented performers. It’s a chase to celebrate all forms of drag and the amazing queerness that comes with it.”
Performer Homer Neurotic shared a few words with us ahead of their appearance at Peacocking. They said, “I’m super excited for Peacocking – it’s great for a show to showcase king drag in this way and the theme is going to be so fun to see how everyone interprets it. I know some of my fellow performers are really going to go all out and present things on stage people have never seen before.”

Hanz Hehim also weighed in on their forthcoming performance, saying, “I am super stoked to be coming to Whanganui-ā-Tara to perform. It is my first time performing outside of my hometown, Whangārei. I am coming all the way to the other end of the island specifically for this show! Ngā mihi nui to the producers for putting me in the line-up. I am nervouscited to be in a show with so many amazing drag kings as I’m the only one in my town, which is why I refer to myself as “The King of the ‘Rei”.”
Bringing a socially-aware side of drag to the front at the show is Frida People. Their drag is all about political theatre and burning the patriarchy, which ranges from shows about complaining about immigration problems in New Zealand, eating your landlord and decriminalizing sex work, according to the artist.

“I’m planning on ‘why dentist is so expensive in this health system’ with the fun fact that a human inside Frida currently has missing teeth and got a ridiculous amount of quote from the dentist. (The plan is to) play both the patient and dentist on the number, bringing a cardboard sign on a toothbrush that says “free dental? please?” said Frida, explaining the set they’ve planned for Peacocking.
Amy Thurst Productions is a frequent producer of drag shows across Wellington, providing a platform for the abundance of local drag artists.
