New Zealand’s swiftly rising singer-songwriter Arahi is set to venture on a countrywide tour of Aotearoa with his high-voltage hard rock trio, Te Tokotoru, in October 2023. Piloted by promoters Banished Music, the tour celebrates the release of the triad’s newest single, ‘Te Hekenga.’ Arahi and Te Tokotoru will head to Auckland, Raglan, Te Awanga, and Wellington for their tour of New Zealand. Grab your tickets to the tour from The Ticket Fairy.
First up on Arahi and Te Tokotoru’s “Te Hekenga: Single Release Tour” is a show at Big Fan in Auckland (October 6), followed by stops in Raglan’s The Yard Music Cafe (October 7), Te Awanga’s Te Awanga Hall (October 13), and San Fran in Wellington (October 14). The gig in Wellington is shaping up to be an unforgettable night, with folk, soul, and psychedelic ensemble KITA serving as the second headliner. KITA’s vocalist Nikita Tu-Bryant also performed backing vocals on Arahi’s single ‘The Best Thing I’ve Ever Seen.’
Te Tokotoru, a three-piece experimental outfit, consists of Auckland-based musician Arahi on guitar and vocal duties, bassist William Devine and drummer Iraia Whakamoe. The group initially banded together earlier this year to perform at a benefit concert for Cyclone Gabrielle Relief at San Fran in Wellington. Te Tokotoru’s music generously incorporates classic and fresh elements, dished out via an electric Maori lens.
Their last single ‘Te Hekenga’ is a thumping rock ballad oozing nifty guitar riffs, pounding percussive work, and a tantalizing electric guitar solo. According to the band, “Te Hekenga’ speaks of a new generation of Maori, coming through and navigating our tikanga in a modern world – ‘Te Hekenga’ is their anthem.”
Talking about the tour, Arahi shared with us, “I’m excited to bring Te Tokotoru to Te Ika A Maui. This Maori hard rock project has been gaining momentum since its inception early this year and armed with our new high voltage debut single ‘Te Hekenga’ we’re more than ready to leave it all out there on the stages across the motu. Mauri Ora!”
Drummer Iraia Whakamoe also shared a few insights about Te Tokotoru and his band members, expressing, “I’m really looking forward to heading out and playing some shows with my East Coast Brothers. Arahi is an exciting artist to perform with, due to his ability to capture his audience’s attention, at times you could hear a pin drop. As for Willie and I, we’ve been best friends on and off stage for as long as I can remember, and this really allows for freedom musically speaking, as you know your mate always has your back. I love that Te Tokotoru has come about and I’m excited to see where this musical journey takes us. Ka timata ai te haerenga ki Te Hekenga!”
