Mali Fires Out New Pop-Rock Single, ‘Semi Automatic Butane’

Chennai-born and Mumbai-bred singer-songwriter Maalavika Manoj, best known as Mali, unleashes her newest tune, ‘Semi Automatic Butane.’
Mali follows up her July 2023 release, ‘Walk Away,’ with an alternative pop-rock offering ‘Semi Automatic Butane.’ The song is cobbled together with delicious synth-pop themes, steady drum work, tugging bass rhythms, and silky vocal harmonies. Mali reeled in producer Keshav Dhar, vocalist Aria Nanji, and drummer Jehangir Jehangir on this project.
Mali’s new track unfurls with head-bobbling and percussive movement, progressing to chugging electric and acoustic guitar sections. Her delicate yet rugged vocals guide the single, accompanied by Aria Nanji shifting in stellar vocal harmonies. A music video for the song was also released, showing Mali driving into open forest grounds as it evokes visuals of fictional characters Furiosa or Sarah Connor, along with musician Apurv ‘Lala’ Isaac shooting a toy firearm. Video director Naman Saraiya also called back a shot from ‘Walk Away,’ with Mali seated on the same couch in both music videos.
Since the song’s premier in mid-October, it has clocked in over 50,000 streams on Spotify and amassed nearly 80,000 views on YouTube. Mali is set to follow up on this release with a multi-city nationwide tour. She is also a candidate at the Europe Music Awards, now postponed, under the Best India Act nominees.
