TFword Selects: The Best Drum & Bass Releases of 2024 So Far

Early into 2024 and the DnB releases have been flowing! Here are some tracks that have been released over the last three months that we think deserve to be in the spotlight.

Drum & bass hasn’t just resurged in the past couple of years; it has fully taken over. After being in the shadows for a brief period of time before the turn of the pandemic and having experienced the impact of the post-COVID-19 era, the genre saw an inspiring shift towards rave-influenced music, reaching unprecedented heights.

Last year, we witnessed as many as seven drum & bass tunes in the UK top 40 hold their positions firmly on the charts. This year, the scene was crowned with a major milestone when Chase & Status took home the ‘Best Producer’ award at the BRIT Awards 2024.

The accolades keep coming, but that hasn’t halted the pace of some incredible drum & bass music that has been released so far this year. Some tunes have rightfully been showered with the love they deserve, while some merit equal attention; and we’re listing them both so you don’t miss out on some of the best drum & bass releases of 2024 so far.

WINGZ – SUBMISSION

We start our selections with this deep and haunting number from Wingz, who can easily be regarded as one of the kings of the drum & bass underground. Many up-and-coming producers have adopted his minimal and funky sound in a variety of ways. ‘Submission’ marked the announcement of Wingz’s new album; and if this is how it begins, we’re quite keen to know how the long release culminates.

IAMDOOMED – FRAMEWORK

Formerly known as Dorian for his jump-up releases, the Austrian producer switched things up by moving into the rolling side of drum & bass; and since the switch, IAMDOOMED hasn’t put a foot wrong. Part of his two-track release in January, ‘Framework’ is an absorbing showcase of intricate drum programming and funky undertones.

ARCATYPE – AROMABOY

When the Arcatype trio comes together, you are guaranteed to be treated with quality drum & bass music. Having made the high-syncopated style a territory of their own, Arcatype returned to Jubei’s Carbon Music imprint for the three-track ‘Roll Call’ EP. From the three tunes, ‘Aromaboy’ stands tall thanks to its breakneck speed and dark, twisted basslines we know and love.

THE CARACAL PROJECT X CAMO & KROOKED – WHILE YOU COUNT DOWN.

A Camo & Krooked and The Caracal Project release is a collaboration we didn’t know we needed. Summers are still some time away but ‘While You Count Down’ has left us longing for them already. Featuring The Caracal Project’s vintage vocals and Camo & Krooked’s irresistible groovy melodies and rolling drum grooves, this one is a delightful summertime number.

EN:VY & AZIFM – ALL NIGHT LONG

Austrian and Kiwi jungle energies come together on this face-slapper that has the ability to crush a dancefloor to bits. Azifm has not known what’s a less than outstanding release since his big debut on Must Make Music nearly three years ago; and En:vy, with his deep and minimalistic style, has been an essential part of the drum & bass underground. The producers have come together for their first collaborative effort and we do not see this one leaving DJ sets any time soon.

BCEE, DJ MARKY, MAKOTO & SOLAH – TELL ME

What do you do when three bonafide drum & bass legends and one of the most profound voices of the genre come together on a single tune? You sit back and enjoy it because this is not a normal occurrence. The cinematics, the crisp drums, and the perfectly measured reese bass bundled under SOLAH’s uplifting vocals make ‘Tell Me’ a tune for the ages, and of course one that is in contention for the best of 2024.

It would be criminal to compile all the top drum & bass releases of the year so far into one list, so we’ll be back with another round-up of the drum & bass tunes that we believe had the maximum impact in 2024. In the meantime, if you want to stay up-to-date with the best releases from every week, head to our Ultimate DnB Spotify playlist.
