Chris Sloan’s New EP ‘Sunset Road’ Is A Must-Listen

Seattle-based musician Chris Sloan has released a scintillating six-track EP ‘Sunset Road,’ echoing a flavorful melange of acoustic pieces, classical rock, and glazed vocal performances.

Staying true to his favored finger-plucking style of guitar playing, Chris dabbles with electronic keys and synths to conceive what he describes as “a haunting mood,” dubbing ‘Sunset Road’ to be “heartfelt. Honest. Emotion evoking.”

‘Ember In The Wind’ kicks off the EP, steered by acoustic guitar-picking and earnest lyrics, delivering a pristine rustic composition accentuated by a steamy electric guitar riff. What follows next are passionately cried-out lyrics – “drifting round the river bend / the current keeps on flowing / when those days are not your friend, just keep on rowing” on ‘Round The River Bend,’ a melancholic Americana tune about hope.

‘Your Love Is Gone’ imbibes a strummy acoustic melody, gradually crescendoing with tranquil vocal harmonies, synths, and percussive patterns. ‘Guide Me Home,’ which sits on the singers’ 2023 album ‘Into The Shade‘ sees a live rendition plugged into the EP, while Chris also takes a swing at the hard rock/grunge ballad ‘Cover Me‘ from rock band Candlebox’s self-titled debut album (released in 1993), roping in their guitarist Peter Klett and presenting a magnetic acoustic rendition.

Explaining this acoustic-riddled production, the singer-songwriter shared, “My first record was very produced. Dramatic. Big instrumentation with grand piano, real string sections, etc. For this EP, I wanted to keep the songs more intimate in how I originally wrote them on acoustic guitar.” ‘Strangers Now’ rounds out the EP, featuring Chris’s gravelly vocals echoing over rich key melodies and string segments, coupled with brooding sonics.

“I wanted the songs to be honest sounding and to not overproduce the songs to keep them intimate, melancholy, and relatable. I wanted to write lyrics that people could visualize in their heads, or lyrics that listeners could apply to their own life situations or emotions. Specifically, over the last 5 years, my sound has evolved into a very heartfelt, intimate, moody, haunting style, which I am absolutely passionate about,” conveyed the artist.

Speaking about the EP, Chris shared, “I purposely wrote this record with the intention of it being a more stripped-back, haunting acoustic record. I wanted to write a beautiful singer/songwriter record that kind of stuck to the basics of songwriting. Simple. Easy to grasp.”

He added, “Each song was written from either an emotion I was feeling or an event that happened in my life. Sometimes that can feel vulnerable to write about and release, but I think it also allows the listener to relate to the songs as we all have way more in common than we think. Music brings us together in that regard and I’m hoping that’s what this record does.”
