Scouring Suggahunny’s Meter Dropping Auto-Rickshaw Party

One of the most rapidly rising, immensely talented, genre-fluid, and frequently billed electronic artists on the scene in India right now is DJ/producer Desiree Saldanha, thriving under the moniker Suggahunny. Desiree officially performed under the alias Suggahunny for the first time toward the tail end of 2022 in support of Sindhi Curry for a Third Culture show. Still fairly recently, in 2023, media outlet The Established mentioned Desiree moonlighting as a DJ, while she was also on the programming team for Vh1 Supersonic.

Since then, Suggahunny has gone on to quickly become an unmissable presence on the Indian electronic music radar and also cement her brand of hip-hop, afrobeat, bass, house, amapiano, and indie dance music firmly on dance floors and venues across the country.

December 2024 witnessed Suggahunny dominate G5A’s PORT After Dark Wednesday sessions and also make her presence felt at the booming Kitchen Rave concept, appearing at a session held at fine-dining establishment Bawri in BKC. The turn of the calendar year saw the release of ‘Desi Beats on Mumbai Streets,’ wherein the deck magician stitched her own twist to a mobile deck concept and etched yet another milestone moment in her career.

Piloted by Gently Altered, a community “building alternative culture,” Suggahunny strapped her console along with a generator into Mumbai’s beloved auto rickshaw vehicle and coursed through the streets to perform a 45-minute session. This idea for this traveling booth setup sparked while Suggahunny was en route for a gig with her console positioned in this manner in early November 2024.

Flanked by a camera crew, bemused bystanders, and brief visits from rotating guest visitors, this now-viral session has amassed over 92K views on YouTube thus far and tracks the city’s vibrant party music smudged with her flair. Navigated by auto-rickshaw driver Sheebu Khan, producer NATE08 also makes a short cameo appearance while multi-instrumentalist Nigel Rajaratnam exhibits his skills on his flute while the wheels and beats are in motion.

Speaking candidly on social media, Suggahunny expressed gratitude to the Gently Altered team and also explained her music selections for this set. She said, “I wanted gems in there that all of us could actually relate to and I wanted it to be accessible to everybody across, not just India.”
