Away from the grief, suffering and loss, the smooth melodies of this jazz outing also felicitate Tarun’s life growing up in Lajpat Nagar, where he writes music in the same space that his grandfather once used as his studio to paint. Opening with unnerving bass and guitar picks that echo tragedy, loss, and anguish, wistful trumpet patches ensue, which are layered over delicate cymbal strokes and a gentle strung-out key segment. Stitched in is also a lively electric guitar riff pressed against rhythmic drum patterns, assembling a stellar jazz melody that captures the heavy themes of the single. This upcoming record is touted to be “his most emotional record to date” and chronicles a personal journey through his Sindhi heritage via the memories of his grandfather, father and the shared grief of a community. The album will delve into Balani’s identity through accounts of the migration of his paternal grandparents from Naushahro Feroze in Sindh, Pakistan, to Lajpat Nagar in New Delhi, India, and explore the rich history of his ancestral land in Sindh. It is framed with his band Dharma, featuring Finnish guitarist Olli Hirvonen, pianist Sharik Hasan, and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, and is scheduled for a May 2025 release date via the German label BERTHOLD Records. “The Sindhi community is complex and hybrid, with multiple layers and dimensions.
