Some of the speed garage bangers include ‘Dancing For Heaven’ and ‘Saved My Life’ by Todd Edwards, Armand van Helden’s remixes ‘Sugar is Sweeter’ and ‘Spin Spin Sugar,’ ‘Ripgroove’ by Double 99, and 187 Lockdown’s ‘Gunman’ and ‘Kung-Fu.’ After a brief period away from the scene, speed garage started creeping back into the limelight in the early 2020s, fueled by a broader UK garage resurgence that had been developing since the 2010s. Finally, that hour arrived when the scene hit a high point with Interplanetary Criminal and Eliza Rose’s chart-topping single ‘B.O.T.A.’ in 2022. This kicked off a new era of adoration for speed garage as well as bassline and other UKG-related styles. The artists currently pushing the sound are Interplanetary Criminal, Oppidan, Hamdi, Sammy Virji, NOTION, Conducta, Soul Mass Transit System, and MPH, who include elements of speed garage/UKG in their music. Speed garage initially bloomed out of underground clubs and illegal raves. This genre started out as a style of music enjoyed by a small group of young people. It gradually grew, made its way into the mainstream and eventually became a part of club culture in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, being echoed through a number of clubs across the UK. With the help of social media and digital music streaming platforms, UK garage as a whole is making a comeback. The genre has now reached international listeners and is being streamed and receiving plays globally. Speed garage is a genre that keeps evolving and making comebacks.
