deadmau5 Tracks Down Individual Behind Years-Old Act of Kindness

Canadian deck sorcerer deadmau5 recently took to social media to successfully trace a long-lost doner from the noughties.

It all began on May 8, when progressive house titan deadmau5 led his followers on a quest to locate a well-wisher from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, whom he had interacted with on an online forum way before he built a career as the prolific producer deadmau5.

In a post titled “Help Maybe,” deadmau5 explained that back then, he had a friend online whom he had never met, while his life was “in such a shitty place.” He conveyed that she once sent him a money order of around 50 bucks, and he wanted to repay this gesture with interest.

He had no recollection of her name or username but believed she was a resident of Louisiana or some other Southern US state. He said that they may have crossed paths on Myspace, AOL Instant Messenger, or in a forum connected with the industrial rock band Orgy, which he was associated with at the time.

This message led his fans into a full-on investigation on the web, with deadmau5 actively engaging and dropping recollections in his comments section for the horde of internet sleuths turned part-time detectives. It also sparked a flurry of nostalgic recollections of the early internet era and the online communities that came with it.

What made this hunt so intriguing was deadmau5 confirming in the comments that this money transfer was the only money order he’d ever received. “You think Western Union keeps records of money orders from that far back?” he further probed.

A day later, on May 9, deadmau5 shared a warm updated title, “We Found Her,” and wrote that, through an old webmaster, he was successfully able to determine the individual was of Russian origin and was living in Baton Rouge during that period. He also revealed that her username was Kalika, and all that was left was locating and reaching out to her.

And find her, he did. On Sunday, May 10, deadmau5 announced that the two had reconnected after decades and, as he noted, “she’s doing great.” He expressed, “So we are in touch again, and I’ve repaid her kindness, and all is right in the world. Thanks to everyone who pointed us all in the right directions.”

The final post in this story was met with a wave of positive reactions and comments, and provided a satisfying end to the pursuit online.
