***Across their sophomore effort on Critical Music, the Swiss duo weaves together a variety of sounds, moods and textures, which we will explore piece by piece.***

For years since their debut, Swiss drum & bass duo **QZB** have firmly established their name as champions of the drum & bass sound that exists somewhere between techy, deep, and minimal. A lot of their music draws inspiration from the precision of neurofunk, which is polished with atmospheric sound design, the emotional pull of the soulful, and a vocal-led songwriting style they have fully mastered. But what has made QZB a particularly influential act over the better part of a decade is their ability to stretch these influences across a diverse range of styles and subgenres, not just within drum & bass, but across the wider bass music spectrum.

QZB have never sounded particularly interested in being confined to one sonic identity. Their productions are meticulously and mechanically engineered, but when they leave the studio or the DAW, you’d never be able to guess it. Throughout their catalog, we’ve heard tune after tune that demands attention from a technical standpoint, but it never misses to leave plenty of room for moments where you simply get lost in the music and feel it.

This balance between technical precision and emotional accessibility was already on full display with their debut album, ‘Future Forever,’ which was released in 2023. It established that QZB could translate the strengths of their productions into a larger, more cohesive statement without losing the qualities that made their music distinctive in the first place. Their latest album, ‘Dreams To Dust,’ however, takes that foundation somewhere more vulnerable.

The album leans into honesty, imperfection and the uncertainty that comes with allowing a creative process to evolve beyond its original intentions. At the core of the album is a narrative about growing individually, growing together and learning to trust each other, both as collaborators and as artists. There’s also a willingness to abandon the expectations that come with an established name. The pair appear more interested in following their instincts and discovering what happens when they stop trying to anticipate the outcome.

There’s something particularly fitting about this approach for a duo whose music has always depended on the relationship between seemingly opposing qualities. Precision and looseness that integrate along with the subtle darkness and intensity of the album. Which brings us to the question of why ‘Dreams To Dust’ is resonating so strongly across the scene. Is it the production? The collaborations? The refusal to settle into a predictable formula? Or is it the way all these elements come together to make an album that feels distinctly QZB without sounding like a collection of tracks designed to reinforce an existing reputation?

To understand that, we need to break it down piece by piece. Because beyond the technical proficiency, the album reveals a duo increasingly comfortable with the idea that the most compelling music doesn’t necessarily come from having every detail under control. Sometimes, it’s about knowing exactly when to let go.

Before the album’s vocal personalities enter, ‘**Deux**’ lays out the groove that everything else sits on. With its long and brooding intro, it sets the tone for the long player without dispensing all of the album’s ideas in the first few minutes, which is harder than it sounds. ‘**Last Breath**,’ featuring **Rue More**, is the first real test of the album’s collaborative approach. What’s worth listening for is how Rue’s phrasing interacts with the old school drum & bass-influenced rhythmic framework QZB builds around it.

‘**Juniper**,’ with its instrumental format, makes it a useful counterpoint to the vocal collaborations, putting the emphasis on QZB’s own compositional language. It’s also a reminder that emotional expression in electronic music doesn’t require lyrics. Released ahead of the album, ‘**Diamonds**‘ gave us an early window into the collaborative approach that runs throughout ‘Dreams To Dust.’ Featuring **Sydney Bryce**, the track brings the relationship between vocal songwriting and electronic production into sharper focus.

‘**Polymer**’ then pulls hard in the other direction. Tight, intricate rhythms and shifting low-end frequencies put QZB’s engineering skills front and center, and it’s the track where the neurofunk precision in their influences is most audible. ‘**Into The Dark**,’ featuring **SOLAH**, is one of the album’s vocal highlights. Deep, soul-stirring melodies sit against a brooding, shadowy backdrop. The warmth of the voice makes the darkness of the drum & bass feel more human, and the darkness gives the voice something to push against.

‘**Interlude Pt. 1**’ works as a breather, a moody transition that gives us a bit of a reset before the album tightens its grip again. It leads straight into ‘**Surface Tension**,’ which lives up to its name with a tense atmosphere and heavy, driving drums. ‘**Colder At The Peak**,’ featuring Duskee, keeps the energy up over a chilly, subtle drum pattern, with sharp, dynamic lyricism riding the rhythm. ‘**Low Light Protocol**,’ featuring **Charli Brix**, leans into ethereal vocal textures over deep, subterranean sub-bass. It’s the album at its most atmospheric, featuring the voice that has been a major part of their back catalog.

Heading towards the departure of the listening experience, with its industrial edge and stark arrangement, ‘**Oppressor**’ strips away the softness. ‘Interlude Pt. 2’ follows ‘Oppressor’ and bridges into the album’s final stretch with ambient soundscapes, before ‘**Hollow Seconds**,’ featuring **MAREA**, serves as the record’s emotional center with its delicate vocals. The fragility feels earned rather than decorative, and it’s the closest the album comes to the vulnerability at the heart of its story.

‘**Cloudbreak**’ lifts the mood again with its soaring melodies and a sweeping sense of atmospheric space. After the tension and darkness earlier in the tracklist, it feels like the clouds parting, preparing the ground for the finale.

The album then draws to a close with its title track, ‘**Dreams To Dust**,’ featuring **HAPPY JAY**, a powerful, resonant conclusion that gathers up the project’s themes of decay, rebuilding and sonic depth, handled with utmost grace. Closing on the title track also gives the album a sense of completion in many ways.

As a package, ‘Dreams To Dust’ shows what can happen when artists with a clearly established identity permit themselves to question it, stretch it and rebuild it on their own terms; and if the album’s central message is that growth requires a degree of uncertainty, then perhaps its greatest achievement is that QZB sound is entirely comfortable with not knowing exactly where the journey will take them next.
