By now, Chase & Status have earned their place among the biggest names in dancefloor drum & bass. For over two decades, Saul Milton and Will Kennard have gone from London studio obsessives to the people who carried the genre into massive arenas, festival headline slots and mainstream playlists.

It began with ‘More Than Alot,’ which announced their arrival, and gathered momentum through the crossover pull of ‘No More Idols’ and the grittier experimentation of ‘Brand New Machine.’ By the time ‘Tribe’ and the sound-system-driven ‘RTRN II JUNGLE’ arrived, they had a futuristic yet formidable sound of their own.

Throughout, Chase & Status have worked on instinct, pulling in ideas from wherever they found them and trusting the audience to follow. That faith has been repaid across generations, from listeners who grew up on jungle tapes and pirate radio to teenagers who found them through a streaming algorithm or a festival tent.

The release of ‘Baddadan’ in 2023 shifted the scale of the conversation around them. The track escaped its UK home turf almost overnight, landing in DJ sets of every stripe, in clubs, on social feeds and in playlists with no obvious link to the scene. Together with ‘Backbone,’ their 2024 single with Stormzy, it showed how far the music could travel when it met other worlds halfway.

The lesson was simple. Going global doesn’t mean shipping the sound abroad unchanged. It means building a space where collaborators can bring their own identities, cultural influences and fanbases into the genre. Since then, the duo have built tracks around what each artist does best instead of asking them to squeeze into a template. By letting grime, rap and other electronic subgenres weave into their heavy basslines and frantic breaks, they’ve made records that feel like genuine cultural exchanges rather than feature placements.

Their latest album, ‘Generic Everything,’ is the clearest expression of that idea. Despite what the title might playfully suggest, the 10-tracker is the definition of synthesis; pulling in voices from the upper end of rap, grime and the wider electronic spectrum.

Let’s start with ‘**Disgruntled**,’ featuring **J Hus** and **IRAH**, a long-time Chase & Status collaborator. The tune is built on a raw, guitar-driven, almost punkish framework that suits J Hus’s conversational delivery before IRAH brings the soundsystem mentality to the front. It sets up the album’s core premise: blend in, rather than ask the collaborator to blend in.

Next up, ‘**Tension**‘ with **Saam Sultan** sits closer to alternative hip-hop than conventional liquid drum & bass, which makes the tune’s eventual release feel like a natural shift in momentum. It’s an example of the duo challenging both the collaborator and the listener. On the big collaborations, there couldn’t have been a more inspired choice than **Little Simz**. Her controlled, sharply articulated vocals cut through the dark electronic backdrop of ‘**Carnage**‘ without competing with it. It’s what we talked about earlier: giving the collaborator room to set the character of the track instead of enforcing the duo’s own style.

‘**Essa Ta Quente**‘ with **Skrillex** underlines the album’s international ambitions. Drawing on baile funk and Brazilian vocal rhythms, it breaks its chant into clipped, repeated syllables and builds around drum patterns that are unusual for a drum & bass tune. ‘**Juggin’**‘ featuring **Blanco** and **Finesse Kid** comes next, where the interplay between the two brings out a distinctly British street-rap feel.

When a grime legend steps onto a Chase & Status production, it is almost guaranteed to be a shell-down. **D Double E** brings his trademark ad-libs and off-kilter flows to a frantic, ravey instrumental on ‘**Levels**.’ His presence also ties the album to the pirate-radio culture that shaped British electronic music long before drum & bass became a global festival staple.

Then comes ‘**Influence**‘ with **Ledbyher**, which works as a pivot in the album’s runtime. The production offers a moment of expansive, melodic relief from the organized chaos around it. **Debbie** brings a welcome emotional center to an album otherwise dominated by confrontational, club-focused energy on ‘**Gone Too Far**,’ which runs just over four minutes and is the album’s longest track.

The genius of ‘**Timber**‘ with **Giggs** lies in how Chase & Status warp the instrumental to fit his slow, menacing style. Giggs doesn’t speed up for anybody, and he certainly doesn’t here. We then reach the closer, ‘**Shutdown**,’ with **IRAH** and **Col3trane**. IRAH, who also opens the album on ‘Disgruntled,’ has been on some of the duo’s biggest tunes, and here he brings Col3trane’s sleek, melodic hooks to close the album in style.

To sum up, ‘Generic Everything,’ as mentioned earlier, works best as an album about musical exchange. The duo are still drawing on the instincts that made their earlier albums so influential, but this record treats drum & bass as one part of a wider UK club-music vocabulary alongside grime, rap, house, jungle and soundsystem culture. It’s another cultural statement from a duo intent on taking the sound they love into every corner of the world.
