Crafted around a menacing low end and Stush’s dancehall-inflected delivery, the track draws on the connections between dubstep, grime and UK garage, with Stush commanding the riddim while Flava D supplies the bass-driven framework. It was a collaboration that brought generations of British underground dance music together, giving Stush’s distinctive vocal style a powerful home in the 140 BPM realm. In the months following its release, ‘Energy’ began finding its way into DJ sets, moving between intimate, dimly lit clubs and festival stages. Its combination of grimey vocals and heavyweight dubstep production proved effective on the dancefloor, but that alone doesn’t explain its growing reputation. Plenty of tracks draw on similar ingredients without achieving the same staying power. What makes ‘Energy’ particularly interesting is how it developed a life of its own, becoming a fixture in bass music sets and an example of how contemporary dubstep can be both deep and forward-thinking. Napes’ remix arrived on Drum&BassArena on October 7, followed by UKF’s ‘Energy (The Remixes)’ on October 23, pairing the S.P.Y and PEEKABOO versions with the original. Across these releases, Napes and S.P.Y take the tune into drum & bass territory, while PEEKABOO offers a darker, heavier dubstep interpretation. The appeal lies in hearing how the same vocal holds its own across those different settings. Starting with Napes, the producer gives Stush’s vocal a faster, breakbeat framework. His approach draws on the overlap between jungle, grime and contemporary bass music, making the rework a natural fit for sets that favor rugged breaks and a distinctly UK underground flavor. His version leans into sticking with the original’s low-end schematics that align itself superbly with the imposing bass sound design, keeping Stush’s vocal central to the tune’s weight. The contrast between her dancehall-inflected delivery and the darker production underneath gives this rework its bite.
